2 Purpose and Objectives PURPOSE To gain an understanding of commonly used herbal medicines and the potential risks associated with use OBJECTIVES Define traditional, complementary, and alternative medicine Review the history of herbal medicine Describe the benefits and risks of consumption of herbal medicine Discuss commonly used herbal medicines in both Haiti and the developed world Understand uses, adverse reactions, and drug interactions with commonly used herbals FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE None

5 History and Use of Herbals Herbal medicine for the treatment, control and management of a variety of conditions has been used since pre-historic times An estimated four billion people (80% of world s population) in the developing world use herbal medicine for primary healthcare Use in developed countries has been increasing since the 1970s. In the United States, over 30% of adults and 12% of children use herbals 70% of people taking herbal medications were reluctant about telling their doctors that they were using them 1. Ekor M.
