1 Volume 03 /// 01 October, 2018 /// Published by COAST Trust Introduction: Since 1998 COAST Trust is working for the development of coastal women, children and disadvantaged poor population livelihood development with the coordination local power structure. In order to increase the capability it works with it has been working with the fund of its own and various donor organizations. The project DEC Emergency Appeal for people fleeing Myanmar has been running in the Kutupalong camp (1E&1W) through four component with water supply, sanitation, hygiene promotion and GBV. The project s activities is aim to establish of latrine, deep tube wells, bathing and women friendly space for the Rohingya people who were forcibly displaced during the early years from Myanmar. There are (among them 7800 are women and girls) thousand beneficiary have been involving with the project activities like meeting, training, observation, camp clean up, door to door visit, soap distribution, awareness session and 6 messages of hygiene promotion. COAST Trust are constructing latrine, deep tube well, bathing place and women friendly space with the support of CARE Bangladesh and the The Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) for multiple uses Rohingya people who are living temporarily in the Kutupalong camp. Through the construction the project activities able to conduct community level such as awareness session on hygiene promotion and gender based violence with mothers, adolescent s girls and community leader. 2 A Safe Place to Call Peaceful Haven People displaced from Myanmar have more than half of women. Many of these women are victims of rape and other serious physical and mental tortures. These women, who are victims of torture, need psychosocial assistance on an urgent basis. A women friendly Space has been established in collaboration with the Coast Trust to bring back these oppressed women to normal life. Through this center, the Rohingya women are provided primary health, psycho-social assistance, maternal counseling and referral services. The spaces run different educational and awareness sessions of psycho-social programs for women. In the beginning when the spaces were started only 20 to 25 woman used to come regularly but now with the time, the number of women grew. Now this days, the session room become houseful with around 50 women. The psycho-social education and awareness program includes gender-based violence, eve teasing, gender equality, reproductive health, menstrual hygiene, trafficking, child marriage, drug addiction, and disaster management. Every day the centers take sessions on two different issues. The GBV and Protection Officer, Taharima Afroj Tumpa described WFS is a space to talk like you talk to a friend. It is self-confidence and friendship networking that they have lost. They are learning many new things. For example, they do not know the impact on their health if they give birth in early age or every year or every alternate year, said Juli Chowdhury, WFS Manager. She also added, Beside us Some Rohingya women also take session on hygiene and GBV issues. Before those women who talked about the horror experience of what they saw, what they faced but now they share what they want to be, a teacher, a doctor, a trailer, a designer or a self-dependent who want to stand for herself and her community. What indicate a silver line, even after experiencing such unforgettable traumas they still do have a dream, a dream of new happy life. 3 THERE IS ALWAYS SOMETHING TO LEARN A day long workshop on for project staff held at Ukhiya Resurce operation centre, Coat Bazar in Coxbazar. The workshop was jointly organized and conducted by COAST TRUST and CARE and supported by the Disaster Emergency Committee. In the day long workshop total 28 (Female-10, Male-18) participants were attended. At the beginning of the workshop our project manager Md. Eunus welcome to all participants and introduced with the facilitator Anjuman Ara Begum, Bilkish Begum and Falguni Rani Das. After completion of welcome speech and introducing period facilitator were discussed workshop scheduled and objectives. Then Care representative Anjuman Ara Begum, Bilkish Begum and Falguni Rani Das conducted session step by step on GBV, Referral Linkage and Pathway system of the project. Through the training session participants have got chance to learn and gained knowledge on gender based violence, psycho social support, referral linkage and pathway system in camp. During training the discussion points and sessions were sex & gender, tree of gbv, society perspective, terms, post risk and danger, referral approach, survivor centered approach, referral services, referral pathway, and counseling. Motivated Lerners Are The Change Makers Besides operation and maintenance tube wells COAST Trust have trained the beneficiaries on the basic operation and maintenance skill of a tube wells. So that they can fix their own tube wells in their crying needs. Our engineers and tube well mechanics are taking the training session in practical with the support of camp maji and community leader persons. Participants get the chance to learn and gained knowledge on water supply. On the other hand, we provided them some basic maintenance tools and manuals. Now they are able to fix their own tube wells beside that they are also help us to operate and maintain those. 4 Good Things Take Time How to make the camp more Safer? The camp is now more organized but still there are a lot of things to develop. Safety audits are used to assess safety and security risks for women and girls, men and boys in a specific area and identify opportunities with other sectors and community actors to mitigate those risks. It should be conducted regularly to reflect changes. with the support of camp Maji, community leader person and members of community Watch Group, trained GBV Officer & field facilitators and volunteers did the Focus Group discussion(fgd). The field facilitator and volunteer are visiting door to door visit program to inform the community people about Hygiene as well as GBV. As per activity plan for the month we have achieved 3000 door to door visit. Though every family has 5-6 members in this account we give hygiene and GBV protection massage to people. Our volunteers also checking if the beneficiaries are following hygiene rules or not. They are also encouraging the community female members to visit the Woman friendly space. In our door to door visit we have experienced that they are trying to practice what they have learned. After taking with Focus group Safety and Mobility Map has been made what indicates the Risks & Threats in the camp. Those Key information were through the interviews. During the FGD the community was divided into two groups. Camp authorities and local influential persons / leaders, Protection groups and Camp level actors were informed in a safety audit. Information about Map of the community, Key areas, facilities & services, Location of groups of people, Safe and Unsafe Areas, Mobility of different groups were collected. Women, Girls, Men, Boys and Local and influential leaders were involved in safety audit. Blocks and sub-blocks areas were also identified. 4
