NPRANG Newsletter Conference 2016 Edition Welcome to this special edition of the NPRANG newsletter. In November we celebrated 20 years bringing together the UK s Paediatric Respiratory and Allergy Nurses. This gave us a chance to celebrate the success and achievements of the group as well as discussing the future and the various organisations NPRANG is associated with. We also learned that we need an IT expert in the group! The Friday evening symposium was opened by Sue Frost with a brief history of the group in its various guises with a special thank you to the first chair or visionary of NPRANG as it is today, Dot Orrell. The evening was a mixture of emotion from laughter and tears, to tears of laughter - memories for those who have been a part of NPRANG for some time and a new beginning for the latest members of the group. Evening Speakers Nichola Butler from Sheffield gave us a history lesson from the past 20 years - from the birth of Dolly the sheep to the completion of the human genome programme; and the dawn of Simon Cowell onto our telly to the demise of Top of the Pops! She told us of many changes and improvements in the respiratory and allergy world; improvements in investigation, diagnosis and treatments; more home based care; guidance and recommendations. We have BTS SIGN, LEAP, phenotypes, NIV, bronchoscopy, sleep services, and it goes on. Opinions change. Expose to pets or not? Eat peanuts or not? But some things stay the same poor adherence and asthma deaths, steroid phobia. Phew and breathe. How did she fit it all in?

Debra Forster from Nottingham read us poems by 2 of her asthma patients. Both were years apart but the impact of asthma on them the same. Airsonett very kindly sponsored the evening. Krupa Patel from Airsonett gave us an emotional story of the impact of allergy on one child and family and the various treatments they had tried over the years before eventual success. The evening speakers were complete when Chris Doyle gave us a comical account from her first day as a very naive and innocent student nurse fresh from the convent school thrown in at the deep end of a male ward (those were the days) - to her varied and interesting challenges today. By the way does anyone have a coyote allergen they can give her? On the right we have, top right Krupa Patel, middle-right Nichola Butler, bottom-right Chris Doyle, bottom-left is departing chair, Sue Frost with our first Chairperson, Dot Orrell, top-left Debra Forster Dinner and Entertainment A most delicious Dinner was followed by surprise guests So Saxy who provided us with some great music and singing to get us on the dance floor. We had to work off some of those calories somehow! There were lots of new faces and just as many old ones too! Oops - no offence meant. It was a great chance to network and eat, drink and be just a little bit merry! Oh and the chance to win one of the lovely or funny raffle prizes!

Some photographs from the evening meal and entertainment. Check out the website for more photographs of the event.

Saturday Conference The morning started with a hearty breakfast for those who stayed the night before, and for the more energetic, a relaxing swim and jacuzzi to soothe those dancing legs. Sue Frost introduced the morning session with the first two speakers from Scotland. Mary Malone from Dundee talked about types of adherence and how to help our youngsters be more inclined to take their medication no easy task... but Health Behaviour Change and Motivational Interviewing being the way forward. A challenge perhaps for us to help them make the decisions rather than telling them what they should be doing. Ann McMurray a magician from Edinburgh spoke about disappearing urticaria with a very interesting case study of a patient of hers who had moved from Scotland to England and back again, where a variety of treatments incorporating National Guidance had offered little improvement. That was until she tried Omalizumab. P.S. Ann s actually an Asthma nurse specialist not a magician. We then heard Birmingham s Priti Kenia talk about cough. What kind of cough? Is it asthma, is it not, if not what is it and what do we do about it? Investigate or try medication? What investigations? What treatments? Or do we watch and wait? See the website to view the presentations. We had a question and answer session followed by lunch and a visit to the many and varied pharmacology company stands as well as a chance to view the excellent NPRANG member posters. Well done to all who submitted a poster and shared their interesting practice with us. The afternoon session was opened by the incoming chair Anita Critchlow and started with the NPRANG member poster presentation winners. Southampton s Catherine Crocker talked about decannulation of tracheostomies and how practice has changed after an audit of outcomes. Amanda Harris also from Southampton looked at CF and PCD. Very different conditions but no real guidance for PCD so she looked at whether to use bronchodilators or not for improvement in day to day health and longer term lung function. Pippa Hall then gave her winning presentation on safeguarding in problematic severe asthma after looking more closely at the circumstances behind those with such a diagnosis referred into the Brompton and investigating whether it is genuinely problematic or are there other issues underlying this diagnosis. Thank you to Julia Neal at Education for Health who provided each entrant with a certificate, and prizes for those placed first, second and third to study at Education for Health. Sophie Dolman based at Alder Hey Hospital closed the afternoon session with handy hints and tips in eczema care including the steroid ladder and eczema care plans and answered many questions under the pressure of complete IT failure.

The Poster Prizewinners Conference Survey Thank you to all who completed the conference surveymonkey request. We have listened to what you have said to help plan future conferences although a bit tricky when some of the answers were split 50:50

Conference 2017 Save the date for NPRANG conference 2017 Saturday 14th October. We have listened to your feedback and requests for other topics and hope to bring them to you. Some of the suggested topics have been covered previously and you can find some of these on the NPRANG website. If you are doing some work or research or audit get ready to share your information with a poster. Conference 2016 And finally, a huge thank you to all the staff at Marriott Forest of Arden Hotel Birmingham who were so helpful from the initial booking, through the conference preparation, dinner, accomodation, and next day catering to the end of the conference and organising us with taxis to onward travels. We will be back. Let us also give a big thank you to Sue Frost who has chaired the group for the past 3 years giving an immense amount of her time and energy to the group. We welcome Anita Critchlow as our new chair who has an endless amount of energy and ideas!
