DEC 24 5?Volume 6, No. 24 NATIONAL HEADOIJARTERS New Year, new Contact Contact s format will be changing in the New Year in order to provide more complete information on subjects that interest ils readers. Contact will be published monthly and will contain one longer, feature article in addition to information on upcoming events of interest. A 'readership survey is being distributed along with this issue of Contact in order to learn the opinions and concerns of our readership. Contact welcomes readers' suggestions, which may be sent to: Communications and Consultation 340 Laurier Avenue West, Ottawa, Ontario, KLA 0P9 or at the phone number or fax number listed below. The fit-st issue of Contact in its new format will be distributed on.tanuary 21, 2000 and on the third Friday of each month from thereafter. Each monthly feature will highlight activities and information from one of the -five regions within the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) and CSC's National Headquarters. Contact will continue to focus on community involvement with corrections and on the many stories of the good work done in CSC institutions and parole offices. ATLANTIC REGION John Howard Society (JHS) helps set up conference on youth justice The JHS of New Brunswick, in cooperation with Public Legal Education and Information Services of New Brunswick, organized a workshop on youth justice. Entitled "Community Participation in a new Youth Criminal Justice System", the workshop was held December 13 at Saint Thomas University. The workshop brought together key youth serving agencies and community groups from across the province. Christmas 'Foy Project at Dorchester Penitentiary This year, Dorchester Penitentialy is celebrating the tenth anniversary of its Christma.s Toy Project which provides toys to needy children across the Atlantic Region. It sets a wonderful goal for special needs inmates enrolled in the Basic Skills Shop. Christmas Hamper Project at Regional Headquarters (RIIQ) This year, staff at RHQ are sponsoring four needy families through its Christmas Hamper Project. Staff donate items such as clothes, toys and household items. Additionally, three families are looked after with money collected through Jeans Days. QUEBEC2.' REGION Cowartsville Institution hosts a Blood Donor Clinic In collaboration with local police and service clubs, Cowansville Institution hosted a Blood Donor Clinic. The Clinic attracted 257 donors to this worthy cause, 40 of which came from the institution and the Clinic's goal was surpassed. Regional Reception Centre (RRC) staff member honoured The Quebec Sports Council (Conseil quebecois du loisir) named RRC Acting Programs Mariager Camille Trudel as the winner of the 1999 Donald Morin Volunteer Award (Prix du bénévolat Donald-Morin). Mr. Trudel was honoured for his many years of volunteering in the field of sports. ONTARIO REGION "Grief and L,oss" workshop at Collins Bay Institution On November 30, regional cha.plains joined Dr. Nancy Reeves in a half-day workshop on loss and grieving. Dr. Reeves, author and specialist in the area of trauma, is particularly interested in prisoners and the losses they experience. Dr. Reeves is also a Chaplaincy volunteer at William IIead Institution.

In addition to the wearing of red ribbons, activities included a poster campaign, staff as sera bl i es, speakers from public health and the distribution of pamphlets. Many sites offered to test for HTV with post-test counselling provided. Open House for stallis family held at the Regional 'freatment Centre (rrir2) RTC's Open House for family, held on December 9, attracted 40 guests, including 12 children, who attended a pot luck lunch in RTC's gym. The guests toured different areas of the Iheility and all the children received gills to remember their visit. The inmates cooperated to ensure that the Open IIouse went well. PRAIRIE RF,GION New Warden appointed at the Edmonton Institution for Women (EIFW) Regional Deputy Commissioner Ré.mi Gobeil aumounced that effective December 13, Janet-Sue Hamilton would assume the position of Warden of EIFW. Ms. Hamilton was most recently Deputy Warden at Ferndale and Elbow Lake institutions and was previously Regional Administrator for Performance Assurance in the Pacific 'Region. Purification ceremony at the Regional Psychiatric Centre (RPC) On December 9, Native Liaison Officer Doren Sa.yer, Cha.plain Ehner Rognim and RPC Executive Director Tim Leis joined Aboriginal Healers and Elders as they purified the entire facility -through "smudging" and prayers. The idea to purify the entire institution came from Regional Elder John Stonechild after conducting a Sweatlodge for the RPC Management Committee. T,ater in the day, fourteen Anglican Clergy gathered in the chapel to pray for CSC., its staff, imnates and volunteers. PACIFIC REGION Ferndale Institution hosts the Fourth Annual Restorative Justice 'Workshop On November 16, Ferndale Institution hosted the Fourth Annual Restorative Justice Workshop to educate staff and inmates on the principles of restorative justice. The theme of this year's conference was "The Spiritual Roots of Restorative Justice" and it focused on its Christian and.aboriginal foundations. "lhe day featured a keynote speech by former Director of Chaplaincy and current Assistant Commissioner, Operations and Correctional Programs, Pierre Allard and the presentation of the first Ron Wiebe Restorative Justice Award. Matsqui Institution hosts Volunteer Appreciation Dinner On November 25, Matsqui Institution hosted its annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner attended by vohnneers, inmates and staff Tho dinner is to express a.ppreciation for the more than 75 volunteers who make invaluable contributions to helping offenders reintegrate into the community. The Communications and Consultation Sector of the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) is working to enhance the bi-weekly publication Contact and we value the opinions and ideas of Contact's current readership. Currently: Contact is published in both official langua.ges once every two weeks it is sent to rea.dcrs via. fax and . Contact contains information on recent or coming events at National Headquarters (NHQ) and CSC's live Regions, with a focus on community activities and "good news" stories from CSC institutions and parole districts. Stories in Contact are collected from CSC's five regions as well as NIIQ and -these are reduced to a 2 to 4 point format, with NHQ and each region usually having 2 to :3 stories each issue. For a number of reasons, Contact has be.en limited to two legal size sheets, me.aning that stories are extremely limited in size. The following suggestions have been made to reformat Contact and to redesign its content to make the publication more "user-friendly" and to allow ibr a more complete discussion of important issues in the correctional field. Contact should contain one "in-depth" story an issue, plus a few "bullet-form" notices concerning other issues. F:ach issue would also contain a calendar of upcoming events, conferences and special days in institutions and the community for the coming month. Contact would be published once a. month with the NHQ Contact writer, with the support of the region being highlighted that month, doing the writing and preparation. The Contact production schedule for one calendar year would include: - 2 features from the Atlantic Region - 2 features from the Quebec Region 2 feattn-es from the Ontario Region - 2 features.from the Prairie Region - 2 features from the Pacific Region, and - 2 features from NHO Total: 12 issues ea.ch year. The reformatted Contact would be pla.ced on the InfoNet and the C2SC Internet site, with the first "new" issue to be done in January Contact
