2 Google recently published the results of an internal study of what makes their teams successful. In the study of more than 100 teams, they found the best teams respect one another s emotions and work to help all members contribute equally to the conversation. The study found that success had less to do with who was on the team and more to do with how the members interacted with one another. Teams like this are willing take risks and share ideas without the fear of being humiliated. This is called psychological safety and it s what I want for us at VUMC. 2

3 Our theme today is It s About People. If we are going to understand how to make our teams work this way, we have to better understand who we are. This has a big impact on how people think and how they can contribute. 3

4 Our largest workforce is the Millennial Generation, followed by Gen X, and then the Baby Boomers. Millennials, for instance, are naturally drawn to work that has a mission and are comfortable with new technology to connect with patients. Those in this group are the youngest members of our leadership team, and we are fortunate to have you. You are the future. We need all ages and voices at the table. 4

5 This shows the VUMC workforce by age, gender, race and ethnicity. Women are 71% of our workforce. Diversity of ethnicity and nationality continues to grow at VUMC, but needs to grow more, especially in the leadership ranks. We cannot fully understand the perspectives of people in these groups as we deliver care to them, unless those groups are well-represented. 5

6 The horrible acts in Orlando, Dallas, Baton Rouge, St. Paul, Nice, Paris and Brussels have affected many at VUMC. I ve listened to your stories are about how prejudice and hatred feels and the physical and emotional toll it takes. As a research center, we understand that exposure to these images and stories causes psychological stress and even higher rates of health problems. Those of us who represent the groups victimized whether African-American, LGBT, Muslim or families of police officers are even more likely to be affected. Please take time to listen to those who work with us. Remember to take a few minutes and ask members or your teams how it s really going. You will be amazed at what you learn. When you hear comments reflecting prejudice, even if not really intended, please do not ignore them. Pull the person aside and say, Here s what you said, and here s how some people feel when you say it. It s just not ok. We all suffer from unconscious bias, a bias that someone else notices but that we might not hear in our own words. We have to have the courage to remind one another when we do this so that VUMC will be a safe place for everyone. There is no room for prejudice at VUMC. 6

7 To help us with this, I m honored to announce that Dr. André Churchwell was recently appointed to serve the entire medical center as our first Chief Diversity Officer. Those of you who know André understand that he has that magic combination of experience, warmth and courage. He will soon begin hosting a series of lectures, workshops on unconscious bias, and town halls to understand our challenges and how we are impacted by prejudice. Please find ways to support Andre and participate in these programs. We only treat our patients as well as we treat ourselves. So let s take care of ourselves and each other in this way. 7

8 I want to give you a quick update on each of our four key priorities. 8

9 Engagement can help us short term, and long term. An example of short term engagement is Lean Teams. The goal is to have 24 Lean Events a year. This is a great way to solve problems and give all stakeholders a voice at the table. The idea is to bring people together to solve problems quickly. A cross-functional team from radiology, that included technicians, admissions, schedulers to the faculty chair, engaged one problem in this case, how to create more capacity to see more Vanderbilt patients and reduce waiting time. Results of this work include: Revised Access Center telephone script to ensure the patient shows up fully prepared. Workflow changes to better coordinate staging of the next patient while they are waiting which will increase the number of scans for day by 5-6 patients per scanner or an additional 1,250 CT scans per year. 9

10 We are also working to articulate a long term strategy that will consider all of our missions and capabilities. This work is all-in as all mission areas at VUMC are involved. The goal is to hold up and communicate our most compelling opportunities and important directions over the next few years. 10

11 There are over 80 people in 10 strategy workgroups so far. We will be engaging many more people. Please submit ideas online at There will be more to come on this in the November Leadership Assembly. 11

12 Since the EpicLeap internal launch in April, we ve been working hard. We had 280 Direction sessions that were attended by over 900 unique VUMC professionals that made over 1500 individual decision recommendations about the design of 500 workflows. We then have had adoption sessions were these workflows are being reviewed. EpicLeap is simplifying VUMC s IT footprint with sunsetting over 130 current applications. Epic will replace or interface with 65% of our current footprint. Over 20,000 will be trained for the EpicLeap Go-Live in November. Based on the feedback in the Adoption sessions, we are now building customized systems to support them. Thank you to those who are putting in hours and hours way beyond your regular jobs. We have 900 Subject Matter Experts added to another 700 Ambassadors, plus Core Design Advisors. Your engagement with EpicLeap will help us build a strong ecosystem based on operations, clinical expertise, and technology that will help us make care seamless. The next system-wide engagement is coming this fall. We are inviting all staff to visit an EpicLeap SpaceStation for the opportunity for hands on-engagement and to learn more about the important work of EpicLeap. Our ambassadors will host over 30 SpaceStation exhibits in September and October. 12

13 The National Institutes of Health is providing us with $71.6 million over the next five years. This is the largest research grant VUMC has ever received. This is a sign of our amazing academic performance. At the Center for the Precision Medicine Initiative Cohort Program, we will be studying the genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors affecting each person s health. We are committed to making the experience more personal for each patient. This research grant will help us provide better care for patients and also effectively prevent illness. Congratulations to Dr. Dan Roden, Dr. Josh Denny, Dr. Gordon Bernard and their teams for this work. We will also be tracking our academic performance this year. In our clinical research activities, academic performance will be an explicit goal for our Patient Care Centers. For example: How many clinical trials are in each PCC? How many patients are engaged with clinical trials? 1) Patients want to be in studies so they can access the most cutting-edge care. 2) It also pays more than Medicare. 3) Our academic performance is a big part of what distinguishes us from other medical centers. 13

14 The Erlanger Health System is joining our Vanderbilt Health Affiliated Network (VHAN). This adds a critical region to our network Chattanooga, south Tennessee, and northern Georgia. I want to personally thank Dr. Wright Pinson and the entire VHAN team who worked tirelessly to make this possible. Erlanger Health System has five hospitals in Tennessee and is the 7 th largest public hospital in the United States, serving more than half a million patients a year. Currently, our Vanderbilt Health Affiliated Network is comprised of 56 hospitals, 235 physician practices, approximately 4,000 participating physicians and clinicians, 35 urgent care, after-hours and walk-in clinics, and 12 health systems. And we re still growing. 14

15 More than 500,000 people use myhealthatvanderbilt to see their labs, message their physicians and follow their progress. The new myhealthatvanderbilt app can downloaded for Iphone or Android and includes: Easier sign on because rather than having to remember a password, users can set up a PIN or use their thumbprint for access. Users can access a street map and directions to an appointment location with just one click. Medical appointments can be quickly added to a user s electronic calendar. Users can view lab result trends over time with graphs that are easier to read than the old format. 15

16 In closing, let s remember our theme: It s about People. Our words have incredible impact. As we grow, electronically and geographically, our words are traveling far beyond our campus. Patients come here from everywhere, and they remember what we say all of us the minute they call us or set foot in one of our facilities, Let s recommit to making sure our words are wise, virtuous, compassionate, and said with empathy. 16
