2 An Unfamiliar Family Member Partnering with Domestic Helper in Parenting and the Emotional Processes Speaker: Ms. Renee CHIU, MAFCFE, BSW, RSW Do you have domestic helpers at home? Have you ever thought of how their emotional functioning affects your family? In many families of Hong Kong, domestic helpers have become important partners in the parenting of our children. How does co-parenting with domestic helpers affect our children s development? Do your children like your domestic helper more than you? Is the parents role diluted while there is a live-in helper? Is your child self-care ability weakened due to having a maid around? How does the helpers family of origin influence the emotional processes of your family and the way they take care of your children? Any incidences of trianging *? Using the concepts of Bowen theory, and illustrations with her real life stories, the presenter will help us understand the mutual influences of the domestic helpers and family members on each other in parenting, and how the emotional processes of the family was transformed, e.g. on the helper s projection process on the child, and the complexity of emotional triangles in the family. This presentation will stimulate us on how to forge an effective partnership with our domestic maids, so that the growth and development of our children can be enhanced. These two become insiders, while the original first person becomes the outsider, feeling rejected and isolated. e.g. After the mother s scolding of him, the child turns to the domestic maid, complains to her about his mother s harsh disciplining, becomes more affectionate with the maid, and rejecting of mother.
