1 HOW TO DEVELOP A WELLNESS RECOVERY ACTION PLAN (WRAP ) Nanette V. First you decide what it is that you want to write your WRAP for You can write a WRAP for anything! Examples include: Mental or physical health Substance use Relationships Each part of the plan will be relevant to that particular thing for which you are planning 1

2 WRAP FOR RE-ENTRY Collaborative program between the Copeland Center and One New Heart Beat (CA) Support provided to people who have been stuck in the criminal justice system to use their own WRAP to break free from the cycle of a broken system EVERY WRAP IS BUILT ON A FOUNDATION 2

3 WRAP CONCEPTUAL DESIGN, PART ONE Wellness Toolbox Daily Maintenance: At My Best Daily Maintenance Plan Triggers Action Plan WELLNESS TOOLBOX Many, many things you can do to be well and stay well You can do these things any time, or never What goes in MY toolbox may or may not go in yours You can keep adding to the list as long as you d like SOME OF MY WELLNESS TOOLS Exercise (walking, swimming & stretching) Nature Prayer Water 3

4 DAILY MAINTENANCE: AT MY BEST A picture of you at your best, in regard to the situation you are writing this WRAP for A clear description of you when things are really going well Gives you a goal, so you know what you are working toward DAILY MAINTENANCE PLAN Developed from tools in the wellness toolbox A distinct list of items you do EVERY DAY to keep you AT YOUR BEST These items are those which, if you do NOT do them, your wellness may be compromised SOME EXAMPLES FROM MY DAILY MAINTENANCE PLAN Go to bed and get up at the same time every day Take meds and supplements Eat meals on time Talk with a supporter Stretch Walk Pray 4

5 WHAT S THE DIFFERENCE? Wellness Tools Use them anytime Some you may never use No harm if not used List may go on endlessly; more options, more hope! Daily Maintenance Use them every day Use them all Risk involved if you miss them List is kept short and manageable/memorable TRIGGERS Events or circumstances that may compromise my wellness if I don t respond to them TRIGGERS ACTION PLAN Triggers: Events or circumstances that may compromise my wellness if I don t respond to them If I don t respond to them this means that I CAN respond to them First, I must develop an Action Plan! 5

6 ACTION PLAN (AP) WRAP isn t WRAP without the AP! Action Planning is Empowering! WRAP shifts us away from a victim mentality TRIGGERS AND ACTION PLAN Some examples of MY triggers: Family stress Work stress Being overtired Different action plan for different triggers Action plans are developed using tools in the wellness toolbox At least two action items for each trigger MY TRIGGERS ACTION PLAN Family stress: Talk to a supporter Take time away from family Work stress: Plan my work, then work my plan Focus on what I CAN do Being overtired: Reduce activity level Make wellness a priority 6

7 EACH WRAP IS UNIQUE TO EACH PERSON What works for you may not work for me My wellness tools may be your triggers Your wellness tools may be my triggers What works for most people may not work for one person REVIEW OF WRAP CONCEPTS, PART ONE A WRAP can be developed by anyone and used for anything WRAP is a lifestyle, not just a program Wellness Toolbox + Daily Maintenance + Triggers/Action Plan = Living Well Every Day WRAP CONCEPTUAL DESIGN, PART TWO Early Warning Signs/Action Plan Things Breaking Down/Action Plan Crisis Planning Post-Crisis Planning 7

8 EARLY WARNING SIGNS Subtle signs of change that only you notice, that indicate to that you may need to take some further action Sometimes referred to as internal because they are not obvious to other people Thoughts, feelings or sensations: you are the only one who is aware of them EARLY WARNING SIGNS ACTION PLAN When you take action at this stage, you can stop the ball from rolling down the hill! 8

9 SOME EXAMPLES FROM MY PLAN EWS: I don t want to buckle my seatbelt AP: Take action against emotion: BUCKLE UP! EWS: I am having thoughts of suicide AP: Write down all the reasons I have for living WHEN THINGS ARE BREAKING DOWN / GETTING WORSE In this stage, things are getting even worse, and other people are beginning to notice, but you are still able to take action on your own behalf These signs are obvious to other people Sharing with others what the signs might be helps them to be good supporters TBD/GW ACTION PLAN but you are still able to take action on your own behalf identify action steps that will help you take action on your own behalf and share these with your supporters Taking action helps you to recognize your own strength and resiliency Support that is empowering is the key in this stage 9

10 SOME EXAMPLES FROM MY PLAN TBD: Self-harm AP: Talk to a supporter; go to a safe place; try not to be alone TBD: Overly sensitive (physical and/or emotional) AP: Recognize that something is off inside of me; need to return to basics: water, rest, nutrition, exercise CRISIS PLAN In WRAP, a crisis is defined as a situation in which you can no longer take care of yourself, and others will need to take over responsibility for your care Allows you to participate in the decision-making process, even when you are not capable of being the person making the decisions Helps you plan ahead so your supporters will know what to do that is helpful and according to your wishes WHAT S THE DIFFERENCE? Wellness Tools Daily Maintenance Triggers / AP Early Warning Signs / AP Things Breaking Down / AP Crisis Plan Written for you Doesn t have to be shared with anyone, unless you want to Can be completed entirely in pictures, if that s what works for you! Written for your supporters Loses it s value if it isn t shared with supporters Needs to be completed in a way that is meaningful to your supporters 10

When my supporters no longer need to use this plan POST-CRISIS PLAN Getting back on the road to recovery Preventing re-occurrence of a similar crisis (relapse, re-offense, backsliding in recovery) What will make your life more manageable after the crisis has passed? What steps can you take to get yourself slowly on the road to recovery? POST CRISIS PLAN 1. How I will know the crisis is over 2. Post crisis supporters 3. People I need to thank 4. People I need to apologize to 5. Signs that things are getting worse 6. Wellness tools I will use if things are getting worse 6. Timetable for resuming responsibilities 11

12 HOW THE WRAP PLAN IS LIKE A RECIPE BOX WRAP IS A LIFESTYLE A WRAP Lifestyle is living each day with: A sense of hope, personal responsibility and self-awareness A willingness to seek out support when needed The continual pursuit of good information in order to make good choices Communicating effectively in order to reach your goals WRAP IS A LIFESTYLE Writing a WRAP plan is more than a one-time occurrence Plan itself is a dynamic document Ever-changing to fit your personal needs and experiences WRAP is a spiritual process Based on personal choice Daily of pursuit purpose 12
