1 KPN Conference General Sessions: Opening: Ben Reno-Weber Stories That Matter The speaker will lead participants through the importance of story and culture, and then engage in a series of exercises designed to create a step by step action plan for their organization. Day Two general session: Janice Gabe A Whole Other Wave in a Whole Other Ocean The ocean, like the work we do in this profession is incredible. It can be awe-inspiring and terrifying, turbulent and calm, ever changing and never changing. Regardless of the nature of the wave, our survival depends on our ability to confidently navigate the water with confidence, energy, and humor, because we realize the most important thing is what we leave in our wake. Closing: Dr. Eddie Woods: Why Prevention Will Always Matter. Workshops: Heroin Addiction in Kentucky: Geoff Wilson This course will provide attendees an overview of the current Heroin and Narcotic epidemic that is impacting Kentucky and the United States. Unique characteristics of this addiction will be discussed along with the prevalence of its use, impact on the user, and elements of intervention and treatment. A Spoonful of Sugar: using data to tell impactful stories: Ben Reno-Weber

2 We will examine how the human brain retains information and spend time crafting stories that are relevant to the prevention space. What s On The Streets: Current Drug Trends : Geoff Wilson This course will provide attendees with an in-depth overview of the current drugs of abuse in Kentucky and the United States. The impact that these drugs have on the user will be reviewed along with the prevalence of their use. Results of the 2015 Monitoring the Future Survey will also be discussed as it relates to trends in use with youth. Adult Drinking and Health: Recognizing the Toll of High Risk Alcohol Consumption: Angela Criswell We will explore current trends in adult alcohol consumption, the key health risks associated with adult high risk drinking and the growing body of evidence linking heavy alcohol consumption and cancer. We will explore efforts to educate adults on alcohol consumption guidelines and health risks, as well as opportunities to partner with the national, state, and local public health and cancer control community to increase awareness and pursue effective prevention strategies. Sources of Strength: A Model for Hope Health and Strength: Cathy Prothro This workshop provides an overview of Sources of Strength, a peer-led, evidencebased prevention program. Sources of Strength has been shown to reduce suicide, violence, bullying and substance abuse in multiple settings, including middle and high schools, college campuses, church youth groups, community centers, faith-based groups, detention centers, the military and more. Sources of Strength moves beyond a singular focus on risk factors by utilizing a true prevention model that strengthens protective factors around young individuals so that when times get hard they have strengths to rely on. The program promotes the idea that many strengths are more powerful than one, and aims to activate and mobilize these strengths in ways that positively change individuals and communities.

3 The Department for Behavioral Health, Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities/Division of Behavioral Health currently has a Garrett Lee Smith Youth Suicide Prevention grant that can pay for implementation of the program. Drug Overdose Technical Assistance Core (DOTAC): Joe Markiewicz Presenters will provide information on the drug overdose reduction initiative at DOTAC (University of Kentucky s Injury Prevention and Research Center) as well as data related to overdose deaths, emergency department visits and inpatient hospitalizations in Kentucky. Presenters will also briefly describe the coalition development efforts related to this initiative. Addictions Associated With Street Life: Dr. Eddie Woods This workshop looks at the causes associated with addictive lifestyles. We examine ways that service providers can impact the lives of the addicted people that they serve and how to engage these clients and get them to trust the process that leads to better choices. How to reach students and parents in your community: Heather Parrino BRICC Coalition will provide examples of the bulletin board kits that they could adapt for their settings, social norming campaign ( we are launching this August using AlcoholEdu data), resource cards, and talk about targeting specific populations through an adapted version of our Voice of Reason initiative. Please let me know if you are thinking of something else. I know that we have a lot of DFCs that attend and I know that we want to fit this to meet their needs. I think that this could get their wheels turning about middle school and high school prevention efforts. Identifying and intervention in adolescent substance use: Janice Gabe This workshop will provide professionals with a comprehensive understanding of Adolescent Substance use dynamics. In addition, it will provide participants with strategies for assessing, engaging and motivating change in teens as well as parents.

4 Value Based consequences: Janice Gabe Most parents strive to find an effective manner in which to discipline their children, to strengthen character, teach independence and value based decision making, enhance empathy and encourage responsibility on the part of the child. This workshop provides a step by step process for teaching parents how to accomplish these goals. How to Identify and Challenge our Implicit Bias: Marian Vasser If you think you are in full control of the way you think and respond to others, think again! Ever wonder how your good intentions were taking the wrong way or event rejected? We ALL have biases that are both explicit and implicit, causing even the most well-intentioned person to inevitably cause harm. During this interactive workshop, participants will actively engage in exploring hidden and unconscious biases. Participants will leave this session with tools to effectively acknowledge and challenge their own personal biases. Truth and Consequences: The Choice is Yours: Christy Nuetzman Truth and Consequences: The Choice is Yours, an enrichment activity designed to show youth the impact of getting involved with illicit and legal substances. Students role-play scenarios including possession of prescription drugs; driving under the influence; sniffing; possession of drug paraphernalia; and trafficking; etc. Depending on the scenario, students visit appropriate officials and/or agencies to experience the consequences of their behavior and to track associated financial and life costs. Participants will learn how to successfully implement an event, review available resource materials, learn about program evaluation tools, and hear success stories about the program s effectiveness. Bullying and its correlates: Robert Daniels This course is designed to increase knowledge and awareness of the short and long term effects of bullying on school aged children, and to discuss methods of screening and intervention

5 Guess Who s Coming To Dinner: Creating a Culturally Competent Work place: Dr. Roger Cleveland This is a skills building training to address Cultural Competency. The training will provide participants a foundation for understanding cultural competency, diversity, equity and inclusion through an organizational justice and culturally responsive lens. Participants will discuss individual skill development, and internal and external leadership strategies to begin to work towards developing cultural competent organizational culture. Writing an effective Drug-Free Communities Support Program Application: Abner Garcia-Lopez Community coalitions who have never applied to the DFC Program, or may be applying to re-compete for Year 6-10, should participate of this training to learn tips on how to successfully respond to the FY 2017 Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA). Facilitation Skills: Angela Criswell More information to follow Needle Exchange Program: Kevin Hall This presentation will explain why Lexington started a needle exchange, how the program works, why it has been successful and future opportunities. There will be an opportunity for questions and answers at the end of the workshop. Engaging and Sustaining Youth Members in Your Coalition: Donna Bumpus This workshop is for school and community leaders who struggle to sustain successful youth groups. Participants will learn key components to maintaining momentum crucial to being change agents. Throughout this workshop, attendees will learn how to develop successful leaders willing to push the group to its potential and allow them to successfully cross the finish line.
