1 National Race to End Women s Cancer Fundraising Guide Thank you for registering for the National Race to End Women s Cancer! Last year, more than 2,600 participants came together to raise over $490,000 to help knock our gynecologic cancers through the work of the Foundation for Women s Cancer. The Foundation: Provides comprehensive information, including educational materials, free survivors courses and direct connections to others going through the same challenges. Funds transformative research and strategic programs to drive the discovery of new diagnostic tools and therapies, and ultimately a cure. Raises awareness about prevention, risks and symptoms so all women can Learn, Listen and Act to prevent, detect, treat and defeat gynecologic cancers. About the Foundation for Women s Cancer For more than two decades, the Foundation for Women s Cancer has paved the way for the gynecologic cancer awareness movement. The only national organization dedicated to the eradication of all reproductive cancers, the Foundation offers free educational courses for survivors of gynecologic cancers in cities throughout the U.S. each year, as well as a plethora of additional resources on its comprehensive, award-winning website, foundationforwomenscancer.org. The Foundation also fosters new breakthroughs through the annual funding of research grants to physician scientists. Since 1995, the Foundation has provided more than $6 million in stimulus funding to young investigators, with a 23% return

2 on investment, earning recognition from Worth Magazine as one of the nation s 100 best charities. The FACTS Every five minutes, a woman is diagnosed with a reproductive cancer cervical, ovarian, uterine, vaginal and vulvar touching more than 95,000 American women each year. Many are not diagnosed until the late stages of these diseases, and nearly a third will die. Through the National Race to End Women s Cancer, the Foundation for Women s Cancer shines a bright spotlight on these less talked about, under the skirt cancers. Reproductive cancers affect women of all ages from their teens and 20 s through their 80 s. The Foundation urges all women to LEARN, LISTEN and ACT to maintain their gynecologic health: LEARN the symptoms and risk factors for each gynecologic cancer; LISTEN to their bodies; ACT to take preventive steps, and seek care first from a gynecologic oncologist when a gynecologic cancer is suspected or diagnosed. Online Fundraising: A Quick and Easy Guide to Reach Your Goal! Follow these easy steps to get started today: 1. Visit endwomenscancer.org and click on the register tab or button. 2. Register as an individual, create a team or join an existing team. 3. Once you complete the registration process a fundraising page will automatically be created for you. 4. Log in to your HQ to customize your personal page with pictures or videos. Check out the HQ Guide for step by step instructions, and to learn about all the cool features. 5. Upload your address book and use the templates to ask your friends, family and co-workers to join your team or make a donation. 6. Follow up with your contacts.

3 7. Thank your donors! Top 12 Tips for Successful Fundraising (Print and Post by Your Computer or On Your Fridge!) 1. Start early. The sooner you start asking for donations, the more money you will raise. As soon as you register to become a fundraiser, get organized and start asking! 2. Set a challenging but attainable goal. Your fundraising goal should be a stretch, but doable. If you are getting close to your goal, then raise it so people continue to donate. 3. Contact everyone you know. Start with your address book, then your regular address book and member lists from clubs you belong to. You ll be surprised who gives! 4. Customize your s. Make the template yours! Include a personal story: why you re raising money, why it s important to you, and where the money goes. 5. Create an schedule and stick to it. Set dates to send a first announcing your participation, a second asking for donations, an update , and a last chance Ask, ask, and ask again. People can only make a donation if you give them the opportunity. Don t be shy about asking more than once. People need to be reminded! 7. Customize your personal fundraising webpage. Include a personal story why you are participating, along with videos or photos. Tug at the heartstrings of prospective donors! 8. Add social media to the mix. Use status updates in Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn to update your friends on your fundraising and provide a direct link to your fundraising webpage. 9. Get creative. Add the URL for your fundraising webpage to your signature. Give out piggy banks and ask people to save their change for a month. Hold an auction. Throw a party! 10. Join a team. Need help to stay motivated? Join a team for camaraderie, encouragement, and friendly competition. There s power in numbers! 11. Stay focused. Remind yourself of why you are participating in the event, and how the money you will raise will help others. Turn to other fundraisers for inspiration and ideas. 12. Send a personalized thank you. After you ve completed your fundraising, send your results to donors and thank them again for their help. You might need their support again next year!

4 How to Raise $350 or More in One Week DAY 1: You ve sponsored yourself by registering for the event (a minimum of $40) DAY 2: Ask three family members to donate $25 each DAY 3: Ask five friends to contribute $20 each Day 4: Ask four co-workers to contribute $10 DAY 5: Ask five members of a club or organization you belong to for $10 each (these people could be members of your book club, place of worship, cycling or hiking group, etc.) DAY 6: Ask your employer for a company contribution of $50 (go beyond and ask them to match what you raise!) DAY 7: Hold a fundraiser check out all the fun ideas on the next page! Where to Send Donations Donations -- clearly marked with participant/team name and the name of the event (either the National Race in DC or a local event that you organize to support the movement) -- may be mailed to the address below, or turned in at the Foundation s booth on Race day. Spring Cleaning: De-clutter your life by holding a garage sale. Make posters to let people know that sales will support the National Race. Going once, going twice: Do you know a chef? Photographer? Musician? Ask your friends and family to donate items or services, or create your own (see Get Crafty). Sell tickets for a drawing, and make sure to let everyone know that the proceeds will support the fight against brain tumors. You can even invite people for a live or silent auction.

5 Fundraising with Food: Ask the manager at your local restaurant to donate a percentage of the day s proceeds to support your fundraising efforts. Work with the restaurant to create a flyer and make sure to let everyone in your network know. Work it: A participant organized a cut-a-thon at their salon. The proceeds from haircuts given on a special day were donated to the Race. What type of fundraiser can your workplace do? Dining for Dollars: Host a dinner party, brunch, or lunch and ask guests to make a donation. Have a computer ready so they can give online, or collect cash and checks. Baking for Bucks: Let the smell of fresh baked cookies, cakes, and cupcakes entice your friends into giving, or get them all involved and hold a bake sale at your school, community center, or work. Charity Chores: Everyone needs a hand once in a while, so do some dog walking, lawn mowing, or babysitting. The money you make will bring you one step closer to your fundraising goal. Spread the word by hanging posters with contact information on tear off tabs at your local community center, grocery store, or coffee shop. Get Crafty: Are you a great photographer, avid knitter, jewelry maker, or do your kids enjoy making projects? Sell your art to raise money or consider organizing a raffle or auction. Don t sweat it (or do): What better way to get ready for the Race than with some healthy exercise? Whether it s spinning, yoga or dancing, ask your instructor to donate the fees from a specific class. Haute Cause: Do you have gently worn clothes that you no longer want? Chances are you re not alone. Organize a clothing swap. Ask your friends to make a $10 donation and bring along five items. Celebrate the Movement: Do you have a birthday, graduation, anniversary, or other special occasion coming up? In lieu of gifts, ask friends and family to make a donation on your personal fundraising page. It s a Wrap: The holidays are a great opportunity to raise funds. Offer to wrap gifts for friends and family in exchange for a donation. Casual or Kooky for the Cause: Everyone likes an excuse to skip the school uniform or suit especially when it s to support a great cause. Promote our Race s signature purple skirt (for boys and men too!), crazy hat, or maybe even a PJ day! Make sure it s ok with your employer or school, then sell badges, which when worn allow the wearer to participate.

6 Change for Change: Are pennies, nickels, quarters, and dimes weighing down your wallet? Set up a change jar at your home or in your office, and invite folks to lighten up by getting rid of their extra change. You ll be surprised by how fast all those coins add up! Spread the Word Through Social Media Harness the tremendous power of social media to raise awareness and exceed your fundraising goal!
