2 HEALTH and WELLBEING courses The aim of our health and wellbeing courses is to enable you/those you support to have a healthier life and help recovery, personal growth and wellbeing. They can also provide activities which help emotional or physical wellbeing; and to teach you strategies to increase healthy living. Introduction to Recovery and Wellbeing Single 2 1 /2 hour workshop During this course we will talk about wellbeing and how it is connected to recovery. We will discuss what recovery means to you and how it is different for everyone, and learn about Recovery Colleges, how they are run and what they can offer. Gain awareness of your own wellbeing and recovery and what can help along the way Learn about tools you can use to take control over your own recovery Hear about Recovery Colleges and learn how you can get involved Wellbeing and Recovery for Carers (previously called Course for Carers) 4 week course, 2 hour sessions Looking after someone with a mental illness? Does it sometimes affect your work, social life, your health? In this course we promote students to learn how to: Keep themselves well when caring for someone in a crisis, or who is suicidal or self-harming or abusive and learn why it is important to look at your own needs. Feel equipped to cope with distress and high emotion and getting a balance between supporting and enabling independence and recovery Information on how to promote and maintain your own wellbeing Have resources and information to assist you to feel confident in supporting somebody experienceing mental illness Your own personal wellbeing plan Information on how you can promote and maintain your own wellbeing Have resources and information to assist you to feel confident in supporting somebody experiencing mental illness Your own personal wellbeing plan Healthy Lifestyles and Healthy Eating Workshops 2 week course, 2 & 3 hour sessions More than half of the adult population in the UK struggle with weight difficulties. Our two workshops aim to provide strategies and to build hope in aiding weight management and in building healthier, happier lifestyles. During Workshop One (2 hours) we will explore why diets often don t work. This will include considering the effects of dietary restriction on our thought processes and why we are programmed to resist deliberate dietary restriction. We will also discuss healthy eating and think about the broader lifestyle changes that can contribute to a healthier and happier life. In Workshop Two (3 hours) we will explore how to improve motivation to maintain a healthy lifestyle and to eat for the balance of good health, discuss the role of selfmonitoring and goal setting in making healthy lifestyle changes, develop an improved understanding of emotional eating and develop skills and techniques for aiding weight management and for building healthier, happier lifestyles. 3 UNDERSTANDING courses Many of us experience physical or mental ill-health ourselves, know someone who does or care for someone who does. One in four of us experience a mental health problem at some time in our lives. Physical health conditions are also very common. Increasing our understanding of these conditions, understanding that our mind and body work together, and sharing our experiences and difficulties can be really important. Learning skills we can use to nurture and help improve our wellbeing and knowing how we can help and support a family member or friend can be really helpful. Our Understanding courses cover many areas where people can really learn to self-manage and to have a meaningful, rewarding life with or without symptoms of physical or mental health issues. Understanding Medication Workshop Single 2 1 /2 hour workshop During this course we will look at the most commonly prescribed psychiatric medications and examine their benefits and side-effects. We will talk about common issues relating to medication such as: whether it works; how much and when to take medication; mixing medications with other prescription medication and/or alcohol and illicit drugs and involving people who use services and carers in decisions about medication. Students will learn about the terms informed consent and capacity around decision-making about taking medication and we will discuss reasons why people stop taking medications or do not take what is prescribed. A better understanding of the benefits and side effects of different medications An awareness of factors that may affect the effectiveness of medications An improved ability to make informed decisions about medication Understanding Personality Disorders 4 week course, 2 hour sessions OR 2 week course, 3 hour sessions During this course students will gain a better understanding of personality and Personality Disorder and learn more about different types of Personality Disorder. Students will learn about its impact and about treatment for recovery. Better understanding of Personality Disorder and its impact Understanding of treatment options Understanding of the barriers to recovery and how to overcome them Understanding Psychosis Single 2 1 /2 hour workshop During this course we will look at what psychosis is and how it is diagnosed. We will discuss the various causes for psychosis and the issues someone who is diagnosed with psychosis can encounter. We will examine what help or treatments there are for psychosis, talk about what the long-term outlook for someone with a diagnosis of psychosis is, and teach students how you can help someone with psychosis. 4 Understanding PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) 6 week course, 2 hour sessions During this course students will gain a better understanding of what PTSD and complex- PTSD are, and how this affects daily life. In helping the brain distinguish between the past and the present, we can learn how to cope/live with the symptoms. Despite having PTSD, a greater understanding can help us to make changes, leading to a more fulfilling and meaningful life. Week 1 - Introduction and Grounding Techniques Week 2 - is PTSD and Complex PTSD Week 3 - Managing Wellbeing Week 4 - Managing Flashbacks and Triggers Week 5 - Managing Emotions and Thoughts Week 6 - Rebuilding Your Life will I achieve by the end of this course? An understanding of how trauma affects the brain and the body and leads to PTSD symptoms How PTSD affects our wellbeing and how to work on enhancing wellbeing How to manage triggers and flashbacks How to work on difficult emotions and negative thinking An understanding of treatment approaches for PTSD and pathways to recovery Understanding Long-Term Physical Health Conditions Length TBC 70% of people with long term health conditions also suffer from mental health issues. Research has shown that reducing levels of anxiety and depression can improve outcomes for people with long term physical condition. During this course students will learn about the impact physical symptoms can have on your life, and learn tools and techniques to help you manage emotional difficulties such as depression and anxiety, in light of your physical health condition. will I achieve by the end of this course? Better awareness of the impact of physical symptoms Practical strategies to tackle low mood and anxiety An understanding of how to maintain progress Dementia Information group (DIG) 6 week course, 90 minute sessions During this course we will hear from different professionals, charities and people living with dementia about the different aspects of a dementia diagnosis. Students will be provided with the information needed to support someone with a diagnosis of dementia, including; understand what dementia is and treatment (Psychiatrists), learning coping skills to deal with the emotional impact of dementia (Psychologists), and learning to understand behaviour (Occupational Therapy). Students will also find out more about helpful practical support (such as Telecare), learn about the different organisations within the voluntary sector (Alzheimer s Society and Dementia Advice Service), and learn about the support Social Services can provide. We will hear from a solicitor about the associated legal matters and think about how and when a Community Mental Health Team can support you and your family. r e c o v e r y will I achieve by the end of this course? Improved ability to understand and cope with the diagnosis of dementia Understand how to navigate services and what services are available to you, the person with dementia and your wider family Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Awareness This course is currently being developed and will be advertised on completion. An Introduction to Hoarding Disorder Single 3 hour workshop Provided jointly by the Mary Frances Trust and Surrey and Borders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust Hoarding has been popularised in recent times by various TV programmes. While sometimes misleading, these have done a good job of highlighting some of the difficulties that people with this problem can face and importantly helping people to realise they are not alone. The aim of this course is to provide an introduction to hoarding disorder for both people with this problem and their carers. It aims to help answer the questions am I a hoarder? and why do I hoard? will I achieve by the end of this course? To gain an understanding of what Hoarding Disorder is You will better understand why people might hoard You will learn some top tips to help manage hoarding difficulties, either for yourself, or for someone you care for To learn more about how to access support 2 SRC20ppsummer2017REV.indd /03/ :13
5 Self-management is something we all do. Learning skills to help you to reach your goals can be really important and are included in this section. Skills for example such as CV writing can help to get a job which can have a huge impact or skills to help improve sleep can make such a difference to how you feel. We have many courses in this section, for example learning skills to more effectively manage our physical health when we are experiencing mental health difficulties and strategies for managing our eating difficulties and relationship with food. Learning skills gives us a sense of being more in control of our lives and this can help our physical and mental wellbeing enormously. It helps us make the most of our lives. Coping Skills 6 weeks, 2 hour workshop This is a 6 week rolling course for people who are receiving services from the CMHRS that will help students to learn effective ways to manage stress, anxiety, low mood or sleeping difficulties. SKILLS courses Week 1 - Managing Unhelpful Thoughts Week 2 - Managing Unhelpful Behaviours Week 3 - Managing Stress and Worry Week 4 - Managing Difficult Emotions Week 5 - Maintaining Wellbeing Week 6 - Sleep Management A better understanding of basic CBT principles Knowledge of how to apply CBT principles to a range of day to day situations Coping Skills for Carers Single 2 1 /2 hour workshop Looking after someone with mental health? Does this affect your well-being and your sense of being able to cope? During this course we will introduce you to ways to better manage unhelpful patterns of thinking, behaving and managing difficult emotions which can benefit you and those you care for. A better understanding and knowledge of the CBT Coping Skills workshops attended by people who use our services Information about how to apply basic CBT strategies to your own struggles and stresses related to caring in order to promote and maintaining your own well-being Improve your reinforcement skills Employment Programme Single 3 hour workshops In recognition that almost one in three people have experienced mental health issues while in employment, seven individual workshops are offered to provide work skills support to students. These workshops will help students to gain or retain, voluntary or paid employment. These workshops were voted for by students. Further details about each workshop will be available shortly. Confidence and Self-Esteem for Work Managing Mental Health at Work Understanding Me and My Presence - How Do Others See Me Keeping Well Through a Balanced Lifestyle Understanding my Talents and Strengths Identifying a Career / Job That s Right For Me How to Manage Caring Responsibilities with Work mindfulness The Recovery College is developing a series of recovery focused educational courses aimed at military families and the Gurkha community as part of a Military Engagement Programme. The workshops will provide mental health support, early recognition and sign posting. We will also work with whole families to support mental health & wellbeing. Further details about the workshops will be available shortly. In addition, a Supporting Employees workshop will be available to employers with the aim of increasing their knowledge of how to support employees who are living with a mental / physical health condition. If you are an employer, somebody who manages / supervises employees, or somebody in Human Resources and would be interested in attending this workshop please register your interest by contacting the Recovery College. 6 Managing Intense Emotions 10 week course, 2 hour sessions During this course students will gain a better understanding of Borderline/Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder and the experiences of intense emotional reactions, and behaviours used to cope with these. Students will learn emotion and behaviour management skills, learn to more effectively communicate about emotions and behaviours, and gain skills that can be used immediately in day to day life. Improved ability to recognise when emotions are escalating Improved ability to challenge self-defeating thoughts Improved ability to manage intense emotions without using self-destructive or self-defeating habits Improved ability to communicate about emotions and behaviour The Link Between Mental Health and Physical Health Single 3 hour workshop People who suffer with mental health problems are at higher risk of developing significant physical health problems. An understanding of the links between mental illness and physical health Learn how to live a healthier lifestyle Meaningful Activities for Health and Wellbeing 6 week course, 2 hour sessions This course was previously called Power of Occupation. During this course students will learn about the importance of engaging in meaningful occupation/activity, learn about the impact of occupation/activity on health and wellbeing, explore occupational identity and learn about occupational balance. Understanding of the importance of occupation and occupational balance Identified personal barriers to engaging in meaningful occupation/activity Individual action plan Discovering Self-Compassion 5 week course, 2 hour sessions This course will explore what compassion is and how this is the cornerstone for understanding and developing self-compassion. Students will learn some mindfulness skills, appreciating the value of living in the moment. The course will also explore the importance of acceptance and working with our experiences and symptoms rather than getting rid of them and how this can help to build our resilience. We suggest keeping a journal to review your progress, to collect thoughts and ideas, quotes and poems, whatever you choose, as well as enjoying the process of creativity which in itself promotes wellbeing. 7 How to Motivate Yourself Using Behavioural Activation 5 week course, 1 1 /2 hour sessions During this course students will gain a better understanding of helpful and unhelpful behaviours that affect motivation levels and mood. Students will learn how to develop a hierarchy of behaviours to increase activity levels. They will also learn the role of avoidance in maintaining low motivation levels and how to overcome barriers to engaging in meaningful and helpful activities. Improved ability to recognise helpful and unhelpful behaviours Improved ability to identify activities to increase positive impact on mood Improved ability to monitor and enhance activity levels Improved ability to set goals and problem solve Introduction to Crisis Planning Single 2 1 /2 hour workshop During this workshop you will gain a good understanding of the importance of having a Crisis Plan. You will have an increased awareness of recognising early signs and symptoms and have the opportunity to discuss helpful actions to take which will support your recovery journey. Respectful Relationships Single 3 hour workshop for Women Only Provided by the Rape and Sexual Abuse Support Centre, Rape Crisis Surrey and Sussex During this course students will gain a better understanding of what gender is, and the impact that it has on their lives. Through a critical exploration of gender roles and body image the session aims to build selfesteem and self-awareness as well as open up a discussion around what a respectful relationship looks like. Students will learn about what consent is and what nonrespectful, coercive, abusive behaviour looks like. The session also introduces students to the concept of enthusiastic consent, which is founded on principles of mutuality, reciprocity and respect. At the heart of the session is a re-framing of the way that society views women, so as to challenge the myths that surround sexual violence. Improved understanding of gender power dynamics and their impact on the lives of women and girls Improved understanding of consent Improved understanding of what non-respectful and abusive behaviour is Improved awareness of the myths around sexual violence How to be More Confident and Assertive 6 week course, 2 hour, 10 minute sessions Provided by Worker s Educational Association The aim of this course is to identify how confidence is lost and gained and to plan practical steps to help build confidence. We will also look at what is meant by assertiveness and discuss techniques for remaining assertive in stressful situations. We will discuss and identify your skills and qualities and learning to talk about yourself in a positive way. Finally, we will look at the differences between assertive, aggressive and passive behaviours. You will be able to recognise how confidence is lost and gained You will be able to express your opinions, values, strengths and achievements in a positive way You will be able to give examples of assertive responses for a range of situations. Please note that as this course is run by Worker s Educational Association, you may be required to fill out additional enrolment and feedback forms when you attend the course. Managing Bipolar Disorder 6 week course, 1 1 /2 hour sessions This course is for those people who have a diagnosis of bipolar disorder and for those people who support them. It s aim is to help people better understand bipolar disorder, spot signs of when an episode may be starting and develop strategies to manage high & low episodes. The course will also look at general lifestyle management of bipolar disorder and ways of future planning to cope with this condition. 8 Stress Management Single 3 hour workshop Provided by Worker s Educational Association The aim of this workshop is to identify the causes and symptoms of stress and evaluate some different techniques for helping to manage stress. We will also be defining what stress is and the common symptoms and causes of stress and discussing different strategies for dealing with it. You will be able to explain the causes and symptoms of stress You will evaluate different strategies for dealing with stress You will be able to suggest 2 lifestyle changes that you will make to help you to manage stress more effectively Please note that as this course is run by Worker s Educational Association, you may be required to fill out additional enrolment and feedback forms when you attend the course. Overcoming Eating Dissatisfaction 4 week course, hour sessions This short, interactive course is for students who wish to build their confidence in managing their eating. The course is aimed at people who have a body mass index in the range of 18-30, and may be struggling with maintaining a healthy balanced diet or have difficulties with dietary restriction and binge eating. The course will explore how eating difficulties are maintained and explore the role of physical hunger and emotional triggers in the maintenance of eating difficulties. Learn strategies for managing eating difficulties Learn about eating for the balance of good health and for emotional wellbeing Insight into the triggers for disordered eating behaviours Skills and techniques for stepping away from unhelpful dietary restriction and for moderating binge eating Realistic goals for improving your relationship with food Improved confidence in managing your eating behaviours Creative Writing Using creative methods such as art, drama and music can improve wellbeing and help us learn strategies to help ourselves. Exploring feelings, the enjoyment 6 week course, 2 hour sessions that comes from creative activities and tapping into memories Creative writing can be a very powerful way of expressing ourselves and making sense of things that can often be hard to unpick even in our own minds. It can also find a way to share experiences with others that might otherwise be difficult. In this course, we aim to make it a fun way of reaching out in friendship, love and shared interests.for this course, all you will need to bring along is a pencil or pen. You won t be asked to read aloud at first if you don t want to, but we hope that by week six you will feel relaxed enough to share. During this course we will: Explore our own voices as writers Learn about different types of writers and writing Have the opportunity, if wanted, to share our work with others CREATIVITY courses stored through music can be very positive. Music for Wellbeing 4 week course, 75 minute sessions During these sessions we will explore how music is used in everyday life and link this to increased wellbeing. We will discuss and experience the health benefits of practical music-making and support students to create personal playlists and explore ways of using them to support emotional wellbeing. 9 courses for YOUNG PEOPLE aged years Managing Emotions Healthy Lifestyles workbook which will be completed during the session. Managing emotions focuses on anger management and aims to educate students in healthy and unhealthy anger, assertive behaviour, triggers and positive coping strategies and relaxation. Some role play will be required. Ability to recognise their triggers to feeling unhealthy anger and utilise coping strategies. Anxiety Management workbook which will be completed during the session. Students will learn about the physical and emotional symptoms of anxiety and practice some basic CBT skills to manage thoughts. Ability to identify triggers and warning signs and to develop coping strategies. workbook which will be completed during the session. Students will learn about the relationship between food and mood and the positive aspects of a healthy lifestyle. Increased awareness of the importance and how small lifestyle changes can improve your physical and emotional wellbeing Healthy Relationships workbook which will be completed during the session. Healthy Relationships looks at domestic violence in young people s relationships including control and manipulation. Knowledge on what a healthy consensual relationship should look like Development of a safety plan if appropriate Sexual Health workbook which will be completed during the session. Students will learn about healthy sexual relationships and how to keep safe. Knowledge of available contraception Registration for a condom distribution scheme Contact details for local services across Surrey Understanding Self-Harm workbook which will be completed during the session. Students will increase their understanding of the underlying reasons for self-harm and alternative safe coping strategies will be explored. There will be an opportunity for students to develop a crisis and contingency plan. Understanding of reasons for self-harm Awareness of coping strategies Development of crisis and contingency plan if required Drugs and Alcohol workbook which will be completed during the session. Students will be educated on the effects drug and/or alcohol use has on the body, what to do in the event of an overdose and begin to develop safe alternative coping strategies. Students will learn about different kinds of drugs including legal highs, handouts will be given as well as information on local services. 10 about the Recovery College Who can come to a Recovery College course? Courses are open to: People aged 18 and above who want to improve their health and wellbeing. The exception to this is for people who want to access the Mindful Service who cater for year olds People with physical and mental health conditions Family members and carers Staff working in voluntary and statutory organisations. Students may enrol in any course at the Recovery College. Some courses are aimed at people experiencing particular difficulties, but these are appropriate for anyone to attend. Who provides the courses? The Recovery College is a partnership arrangement involving a range of organisations such as voluntary organisations, the NHS, the local authority and existing colleges. Refer to course details to see which organisation provides each course. All courses are run either by Surrey & Borders Partnership Foundation NHS Trust or by staff from one of our partnership organisations. The courses are co-developed and co-delivered with Recovery Coaches or Recovery College Volunteers. They are experts by experience with lived experience of a mental or physical health condition, or are supporting someone else with a mental or physical health condition. RESILIENCE Where do courses take place? Courses are offered in a range of venues across Surrey. How much does a course cost? All courses are free unless a price is stated. happens if not enough people enrol onto a course? Unfortunately we can t run a course if there aren t enough attendees. We will inform you if this is the case with a course that you have booked onto. Will I be able to attend a course if I had difficulties with learning at school? Yes! The courses are aimed at a range of students though some rely on reading and writing more than others. Please contact us to discuss your individual learning needs and see which courses may be most suitable. One of us can also help you to develop your own Individual Learning Plan to support you. How do I know when the courses are running? Dates of upcoming courses are listed with the course information. Please note that additional dates may be added, so please contact the Recovery College to express your interest in a course in order to make sure that you are updated with new course dates and information. The Recovery College offers people with lived experience opportunities to get involved as volunteers. 11 e n r o l l i n g How do I access the Recovery College/enrol on a course? You don t need to be referred to the Recovery College - it is open to everyone. You can book on to as many courses as you like. To attend a course you must enrol to the college. It is not possible to turn up for a course without enrolling first. You will not be allowed to stay for the class if you have not enrolled. To enrol, you need to complete and return an enrolment form. There is a form in the back of this prospectus which you can post back to us, or you can request a form via (address below).
