2 The Gift of Growing Up Thank you all for supporting Children s of Alabama through your Children s Miracle Network Hospitals campaign, event or signature day! We are so grateful for you! In 2017, more than $2.7 million was raised to help fund critical patient care, research and patient education at Children s. The funds you raised are critical to help advance our mission of providing the best medical care to every child in Alabama who needs pediatric sub-specialty care, regardless of the family s ability to pay. In reflecting on your efforts throughout the past year, I thought about how, ultimately, our goal at Children s and your goal as our partner is to make every kid better. We want every child that comes through our doors to have the chance to grow up a healthy, happy kid and pursue his or her dreams. Your support helps us do that each day, and we want you to know the significant impact you have on our hospital. You give our patients the gift of growing up. As I look forward to 2018, I know our partnerships with you will continue to grow and provide Children s of Alabama with lasting support for patients now and in the future. As you prepare for your 2018 campaign, event or signature day, please remember that you are giving Alabama s children the gift of growing up and what could be a more special gift than that? Thank you for an amazing 2017! Here s to a marvelous 2018! Emily Hornak Director, CMN Hospitals Children s of Alabama 2

10 Why I fundraise for Children s Miracle Network Carol Hall, Personnel Coordinator Walmart #483 As a proud Walmart associate and an ambassador for the children, we enjoy giving back to the community, but giving back to the children, is extra special. As adults it is our responsibility to provide them with the best care and nourishment they deserve. Brenda Reid, Media and Community Relations Manager Publix Super Markets Publix Super Markets is a longtime supporter of Children s Miracle Network Hospitals which includes Children s of Alabama. We invite our customers and associates to donate to support programs, services and equipment that help Children s Hospitals better serve the communities where we work and live. Many of our associates tour the hospitals to get a birds eye view of how the hospitals help improve the lives of babies and children throughout the southeast. There have been many occasions where our associates and their children have been patients in these hospitals over time. We are fortunate to have such a great Children s Hospital in Alabama. And, we commend them for saving lives and making a difference in the lives of our most cherished possessions The Children of Alabama. Jack Ebersold, President University of Alabama Dance Marathon The first factor in my decision to join University of Alabama Dance Marathon was because in July of 1995 I was born 8 weeks early and had to spend the first month of my life in the NICU, rather than getting to go home like most normal babies. Fortunately, even with my premature status, I have experienced zero health complications and by the grace of God, I have been able to live a completely normal life. Because I was so fortunate, I feel that I have a duty to give back and do my best to raise awareness and funds for those kids who aren t as lucky. The kids who don t get to leave the hospital after one month. Who don t get to experience the same childhood many of us were given. 10 Additionally, once I got to the University of Alabama and started my involvement in Dance Marathon it turned into something bigger than just my personal experience. I wanted to do as much as I possibly could to give back in any way, shape, or form. As each week passes I hope to lead UADM to make a lasting impact on Children s of Alabama and the kids that call that place home so that one day they too can reach their dreams and maybe have the chance to call a university campus their home too. Running a program that not only raises money but is also a support system for our 22 Miracle Kids and more in the hospital is the best part of my time here at Alabama. In the past three years, my reason for participating in UA Dance Marathon has transformed from a why to a why not?

11 Why I fundraise for Children s Miracle Network Emmett Colston, McCalla Branch Manager eco credit Union I choose to fundraise for Children s because I know firsthand the amazing care and service they provide to the kids of Alabama. When I was about 8 years old, I had asthma and bronchitis in the worst way. At that age, I got extremely sick and had to stay at Children s for 2 months (November through 1st of January). My stay was awesome and Christmas was perfect! I honestly didn t want to leave because of the fantastic environment. Children s gives kids, with health challenges, a way to enjoy being a kid and receive stellar care which I m sure parents love- I know my parents did! Ryan Black, General Manager Love s Travel Stops, Store #381 When I first started raising money for Children s Hospitals of Alabama I was doing it to help children and their families out. As time went on my two girls started helping us raise money and to see them in action was a blessing. To know that they would work for 6 to 8 hours to raise money for other kids is probably one of the most treasured moments in my life. We began to plan out how we were going to raise money each year to see if we could raise more money than the previous. But I think even more important, is my girls would ask me how well they were doing helping other kids. Knowing that my kids were more concerned about other children made me realize that it was not just about doing it because Love s did it, but because we were helping out those that were in a real need. We even took our kids to Momentum so they could meet some of the kids they were helping and about a month before we left they made every kid a friendship bracelet. So you ask why I do this now? I do it because it brings my family together and teaches my kids that because of their hard work and kids working for kids, there is still hope. It is no longer about the dollar amount (even though that is very helpful) but the relationships that we build during these times. Aimee Sims, Owner Dairy Queens #44470 and #43066 You never really know who you need until you need them! The reason I support and donate to Children s hospital is because my husband and I were faced with not only one child that was sick, but two. So we were able to see firsthand the miracles they can achieve with the support of their business community. As we have continued to grow our Dairy Queen brand, Children s remains our charity and we do everything in our power to support them. Life for us was never about us making it, but who we can have an impact on along the way! We believe that Children s represents that every day. 11

12 DOING GOOD IS GOOD FOR BUSINESS Given similar price and quality, 90% of consumers are likely to switch brands to one associated with a good cause. 82% of consumers consider a company s social and environmental commitments when deciding what to buy and where to shop. 87% of millennials will purchase a product with a social benefit and 82% will tell others in their networks about it. 85% of consumers say a simple thank you after giving is enough. 62% of employees would choose to work for a socially responsible company even if the salary is less than at other companies. 13 making the ask YOU are the link to helping Children s of Alabama save lives and treat thousands of kids every year. Asking a customer/member to help only take a few seconds, but can make an impact to last a lifetime. Important Facts to Know: Children s of Alabama is your local Children s Miracle Network Hospital Funds raised from your CMNH campaign stay local and support patients and families at Children s of Alabama Money raised is used for things like care, research, equipment, education, and programs that help kids in the hospital Ways to ASK Depending on your type of campaign, there are all kinds of ways to engage your customers/ members to donate. Here are some common ways to ASK: Would you like to help us help sick kids treated at Children s of Alabama? Would you like to be a part of our (name of campaign) Campaign? We are raising money for kids at Children s of Alabama. Would you like to donate $1 to Children s of Alabama? Would you like to donate your change to Children s of Alabama? 14 campaign materials Just the Facts: This is a great overview of who Children s of Alabama is and the scope of what we do each year for kids all over the state. COA Embroidered Stickers: Our partners love to sport these stickers on their uniforms and name badges throughout the campaign to help spread awareness (*Be sure to remove from clothing before laundering, or stickers can become permanent.) Patient Trading Cards: These are some of the faces and stories of amazing kids who have been treated at our hospital. These can be distributed to your employees or even customers to help share the miracles that are happening at Children s every day. Remember: all money stays local and helps patients at your local Children s Miracle Network Hospital, Children s of Alabama. Lanyards: Patient trading cards fit perfectly into these lanyards that employees can wear to help spread awareness for the campaign. These names and faces of real local kids, who have been helped by campaigns just like yours, can make it easy to make the ask at point-of-sale. Example: Would you like to buy an icon to help kids like Gabby at Children s of Alabama? Patient Stories: We ve made the patient stories on our trading cards bigger and easy to put up throughout your location to share with your staff and community. 14

16 BEST PRACTICES T-Shirt Fridays Make a donation to wear a CMNH t-shirt on a designated day once a week or month. Store to Store Competition Challenge another store or club in your community or create competition between different departments in your store/club, with the losing department or unit agreeing to cook lunch for the winners or to dress like clowns for the day or any other fun ideas you can come up with. Crazy Hat Fun Give a cashier a crazy hat to wear until they pass a designated goal. Once the goal is met they select a new cashier to wear the hat and meet the goal. Use any crazy or fun item - Mardi Gras beads, sunglasses, wigs, rival s team jersey, etc. Rent-A-Regional Place a bid to rent your Regional Manager. Rent your Regional for an hour to do whatever your creative minds can come up with in your stores. All you have to do is your bid to your Regional Manager. The Regional will keep you informed of the highest bid through . At an agreed upon promotion end date, a winner will be declared. The next time your Regional is in the store, you will put him/her to work for an hour. (Don t forget to get your Regional to agree to this promotion in advance!) Have Fun with your Manager Place empty jars in the break room with pictures of each manager. Throughout a two week period, allow associates/employees to vote with their change. At the end of the allotted time, the manager with the most money has to do something like bring treats for everyone OR wear a bright colored wig to work OR walk backwards OR something the associate/employees come up with that is fun and safe! Food or Treats Bake sales Cake walk Chili cook-off BBQ cook-off Taco bar Popcorn Hotdogs or burgers Sandwich bar Ice-cream sundae bar Pancake breakfasts or lunches Potluck meals Grab/prize bags Special Events and Tournaments Golf tournaments Other tournaments (bowling, basketball, fishing, hunting, etc.) Non-traditional tournaments (broom hockey, ultimate frisbee, ping pong, darts, horseshoes, skeet shooting, marshmallow putting contest, plunger putting contest, etc.) Races & relays (running, walking, biking, horseback, skateboarding, etc.) Family carnival (with games such as ring toss, spin art, face painting, dunking booths, etc.) Dances (sock hops, line dancing, etc.) Company picnic at local park 16

17 BEST PRACTICES Special Events and Tournaments continued Battle of the Bands (hosting internal talent at local establishments with cover charges) Volunteering at local events (working concessions for sports venues, etc.) Store/Location Records (When the facility reaches a goal or milestone, host a celebration to support Children s Miracle Network). Contests and Challenges Crazy hat Pet beauty pageants Associate/employee talent shows Guess who? (Display baby pictures of managers) Photography contest (best photo from vacation, best Christmas tree photo, etc.) Guess the number (fill large container with jelly beans, paper clips, nuts & bolts, coins, m&m s, etc.) Shaved Head Jail & Bail Scavenger Hunt Karaoke Threat (associates/employees pay in order to force a co-worker to sing. They must sing or pay to not). Coin Collection Use Children s Miracle Network canisters Bags of Money (Give associates/employees a sandwich-size baggie and ask them to fill them with loose change from their home, car, etc.) Quarters by the Miles (Use tape on the floor of the warehouse to mark the length of how many quarters, laid end-to-end, have been raised) Rollin For Miracles Associate/employees have one year to fill coin rolls that add up to $ Pennies for the Patients - Place a container out to collect donations that will hold 1 million pennies ($10,000). Fish Tank - Fill a 10 gallon fish tank with water and place a small glass at the bottom of the tank. If customers can get a quarter in the glass, they win a prize. Use distilled water it doesn t get dirty as quickly so doesn t need to be changed as much. Fill the bottom of the tank with rocks to stabilize the glass. Seasonal Fund Raising Holiday flower sale (Team with a local florist to sell poinsettias at Christmas, roses for Valentine s Day, spring bouquets for Mother s Day, potted mums for Memorial Day, etc.) Photos with Santa Holiday gift baskets Christmas tree festival Decorating & selling Valentine s cookies (or any holiday cookie) Easter Egg Hunt Services Car wash and/or detailing Face painting booth Do My Job (for a set fee, managers & supervisors take over your job for one hour, or people exchange jobs.) 17

18 additional ideas The store manager has a race with the top fundraising cashier to see who can get the most donations in an allotted amount of time. Pick a specific weekend and have every store in the market hold a fundraiser for CMNH during that weekend. Assign each member of the store management team a day that they are responsible for raising money for CMNH. Make it a fun competition and see who can raise the most money. To make it fair, have like managers compete on the same day of the week. Have a market contest to see which store can raise the most money. Winning store gets a catered lunch or other treat. Divide the store goal between the number of associates/employees in the store. Ask each associate/employee to raise that amount of money. Give prizes for the first associates/employee to raise the amount, any associates/employee who raises the specified amount, and give a pizza party for the store if everyone raises their amount. Ask associates/employees to write down their reason for raising money for Children s of Alabama. Post in a public place or have associates/employees put it in a place where they will be reminded daily why they are asking for donations to benefit the kids! Invite your local police or fire departments to participate in fundraising events. Ask EVERY customer for 25 cents. Most everyone can afford to donate a quarter and those quarters add up to lots of dollars for the kids! 18
