AMT Distant Student Society Healthy Helping How to Guide Self-Breast Examinations CPR Self- Testicular Examinations

Self-Breast Examinations In the Shower Using the pads of your fingers, move around your entire breast in a circular pattern moving from the outside to the center, checking the entire breast and armpit area. Check both breasts each month feeling for any lump, thickening, or hardened knot. Notice any changes and get lumps evaluated by your healthcare provider. In The Mirror Visually inspect your breasts with your arms at your sides. Next, raise your arms high overhead. Look for any changes in the contour, any swelling, or dimpling of the skin, or changes in the nipples. Next, rest your palms on your hips and press firmly to flex your chest muscles. Left and right breasts will not exactly match few women's breasts do, so look for any dimpling, puckering, or changes, particularly on one side. Lying Down When lying down, the breast tissue spreads out evenly along the chest wall. Place a pillow under your right shoulder and your right arm behind your head. Using your left hand, move the pads of your fingers around your right breast gently in small circular motions covering the entire breast area and armpit. Use light, medium, and firm pressure. Squeeze the nipple; check for discharge and lumps. Repeat these steps for your left breast.

C.P.R Statistics prove that if more people knew CPR, more lives could be saved. Immediate CPR can double, or even triple, a victim s chance of survival. Be a lifesaver Learn CPR! CPR consist of three basic parts, using the acronym C.A.B can help you remember the sequence. Chest Compressions Airway Breathing For Adults and Children over Age 12 Once at the victim s side, quickly make sure the scene is safe for the victim and yourself, and then follow these guidelines: Check the victim for unresponsiveness If the person is not responsive and not breathing or not breathing normally have someone call 911, if alone, call yourself but immediately return to the victim and start chest compressions Chest Compressions- Put the heel of one hand on the center of the victim s chest on the lower part of the breastbone. Put the heel of the other hand on top of the first hand and push down 2 inches 30 times. Pump hard and fast at the rate of at least 100/minute, faster than once per second. Allow complete chest recoil after each compression

Airway- Tilt the victim s head back and lift the chin Breathing-Pinch the victim s nose and cover the mouth with yours and blow until you see the chest rise. Give 2 breaths. Each breath should take 1 second Continue giving cycles of 30 compressions and 2 breaths until EMS arrives For Infants and Children under Age 12 Follow the same sequence as the adult CPR(Chest compressions, Airway and Breathing) When doing chest Compressions, use only one hand on the mid sternum (about the nipple line). On infants, put two fingers on the breastbone directly between the baby's nipples. Push straight down about an inch and a half and then let the chest all the way back up Push hard enough to compress the chest, but not too hard Compress 30 times, followed with 2 breathes Keep doing CPR for 2 minutes (about 5 groups of compressions and 2 breathes) before calling 911; continue CPR until EMS arrives

Self-Testicular Examination All males should perform a testicular self-exam monthly. Testicular cancer is most common in men ages 15 to 35. Just a few minutes a month can help prevent or catch cancer in its early stage, which increases your chance for a better prognosis. Use a mirror to examine your testicles. Sit down in a well-lit area and use a small mirror to examine your scrotum for visible lumps or swelling. A mirror is helpful because otherwise you can't get a good look at the entire scrotum Feel your testicles to detect any differences between them. Hold your scrotum and testicles in the palm of one hand and feel for any differences between the testicles. It is normal for one testicle to be hang slightly lower than the other and to be slightly larger than the other, but if one testicle seems to be much larger than the other or if it seems to have an abnormal shape or hardness, it's time to see a doctor for further examination Examine each testicle for lumps or swelling. Use one hand to hold your scrotum and penis in place and use the other to examine each testicle, one at a time. Gently roll the testicle between your thumb and forefinger to check for swelling, lumps, hardness, or an unusual heaviness. Do this slowly and make sure to check all around each testicle. The testicles should be smooth all around, but you will notice a soft tube, called the epididymis coming from the top of each one Be on the lookout for other cancer symptoms. While an abnormality in the testes is the surest sign of testicular cancer, other symptoms, such as backache, stomach pains, coughing, or tenderness around the nipples, may be indicative of a spread of the cancer. These symptoms, of course, may accompany any number of other illnesses or injuries, so simply be aware of them and be sure to examine your testicles or see a doctor if they occur

Dear Viewers, Thank you for taking an interest in this Healthy Helpful How to Guide on better health. It was created by a group of Midway College Online Medical Assisting student s that are also members of the AMT Student Society. The purpose is to help inform individuals on the importance of having a healthy life. This how to guide provides steps to check for Breast Cancer, how to perform CPR on infants as well as adults and how to perform a self-exam to check for Testicular Cancer. Although this guide covers a few helpful and handy tips, overall health is very important to stay on top of. Eating the right foods, nutrients, and exercising daily (at least 30 minutes) are also important. Better health all begins with a having knowledge on how to stay on a healthy lifestyle routine. By practicing good hygiene, your overall health will improve. Hand washing is the single most important thing a person can do to protect themself from diseases and to help aid in infection control. A very important thing a person can do to maintain a healthy life is to attend all regular doctor appointments and checkups. Kicking bad habits such as smoking, alcohol use, tobacco use, drug use, and poor eating habits will also improve a person's health dramatically. While physical health is important, it is also vital to not forget our emotional and mental health. Making sure to manage stress levels, have meaningful relationships with family or friends, and finding enjoyable activities are all great ways to nourish our emotional and mental health. Emotional and mental health are many times a forgotten aspect of monitoring ways to stay healthy but are an essential piece of the puzzle to achieving optimal health. Safety skills are also key components of good health. A few to adhere to include avoiding injury by wearing seatbelts and bike helmets if you ride a bike, using smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in the home, and using street smarts when walking alone. It is also important to prevent sexually transmitted disease and HIV/AIDS by using condoms every time you have sexual contact. Stay out of the sun, especially between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. when the sun's harmful rays are strongest. You are not protected if it is cloudy or if you are in the water, the harmful rays pass through both. Use a broad spectrum sunscreen that guards against both UVA and UVB rays, with a SPF of 30 or higher. Individuals can also select sunglasses that block 99 to 100 percent of the sun's rays. Great health will easily be achieved if small steps are taking effectively. We, the Distant AMT Student Society, would like to thank you again for the interest in this healthy helpful how to guide. We have enjoyed the experience and time creating this, giving YOU, the viewers, a helpful look into beginning of a healthier lifestyle!
