Wyss, Bern º Young vascular surgeons in training or junior consultants have the unique opportunity to train all vascular accesses to the lower limb arteries. º If you are interested in dialysis access surgery you have the opportunity to train all arteriovenous accesses in a 2-days course º With increasing therapeutic options and advanced endovascular techniques on and around the aortic arch there are few training opportunities. You have the unique opportunity to train supraaortic debranching techniques and open aortic procedures on the thoracic and thoracoabdominal aorta on the prepared cadaver º The course exists for more than 20 years º The course qualifies as open surgical workshop according to SGG º Studies published in medical journals show significant improvement of technical skills Dearest colleague, For 28 years Vascular International, School for Vascular Surgery, has been dedicated to the vascular education for doctors and OR teams, offering optimised and high-quality training, teaching and learning of vascular techniques on lifelike models. Under the aspect of maximum patient safety the guiding principle of VI is to optimise and develop vascular training and teaching methods to support safe and efficient open and endovascular surgical treatment of patients. From 30 April to 5 May 2018 we organise our world renowned Surgical Anatomy and Open Vascular Techniques Courses in the institute of anatomy in Bern. These unique workshops have proved over the last 20 years to be a very effective training method for vascular surgeons. The arm and leg courses are open to Vascular Surgeons in training. The thoracic course is designated for advanced vascular and cardiac surgeons. The training atmosphere is relaxed and full discussion is encouraged. Limited seats are available, so please register early! Join us for an enriching learning experience. We look forward to meet you in Bern. On behalf of Vascular International and all tutors, Prof. Dr. Jürg Schmidli, Bern PD Dr. Matthias K. The close tutor- to-student interaction guarantees an intensive learning process. The courses are based on practical dissection of 5-7 cadavers (legs, arms thoracic aorta and supraaortic arteries).
3 Access to Peripheral Arteries of the Leg 30 April - 1 May The workshop provides vascular surgery trainees and junior consultants excellent insights of the anatomy of vessels and nerves of the lower limb from the groin to the foot. All accesses for open surgical procedures are demonstrated and trained. Anastomoses can be performed. The course provides hands-on experience to perform open straight forward distal bypass surgery. º Topographic anatomy leg arteries (short lecture) º Access popliteal artery pars I und III º Access to all crural arteries º Access to pedal and plantar arteries º Posterior access to popliteal artery at the popliteal fossa º Groin access, course of the femoral bifurcation and deep femoral artery, femoral nerve º Lumbotomy and access to iliac arteries º Alternatives in bypass-surgery, tunneling, bypass procedure above knee º Bypass procedure below knee, great saphenous vein, small saphenous vein, principles of in-situ bypass, clamping variations infragenicular arteries, distal anastomoses, popliteal interpositions Course Fee: CHF 1 450,- CME Credits: 14 Registration online: Vascular Access Masterclass 2-3 May This course aims at teaching young vascular surgery trainees or surgeons in the strategies of access planning and in the concepts of vascular access creation. Participants will learn -in teams of twoto perform various arterio-venous fistulas (AVF) in the forearm and upper arm and to place arterio-venous grafts (AVG) in a safe manner. Experts assist you in improving your technical skills and share their knowledge and experience with you. º Basics in vascular access creation (short lecture) º Brachio-cephalic AV fistula º Radio-cephalic AV fistula, snuff box AV fistula º Grafts and other devices for vascular access (short lecture) º Forearm loop graft º Re-routing technique in local infections º Case presentations by the participants º Basilica transposition º DRIL procedure, PAVA º Subclavian loop AVG º AVF elevation technique, patch technique º Feedback session Course Fee: CHF 1 450,- CME Credits: 14 Registration online:
4 Thoracic Aorta and Thoracoabdominal Aorta and Neck Arteries 4-5 May This specific and unique vascular course aims at improving knowledge of anatomical access to the thoracic and thoracoabdominal aorta and supra-aortic vessels including sternotomy and first rib resection. Numerous vascular reconstruction procedures on supraaortic vessels can be performed. Open descending aorta and thoracoabdominal aortic repair is practiced. The course enables anatomic dissections and practice on fresh cadavers, with the contribution of experts in this field of complex vascular surgery. Practical exercise on NECK Arteries º Access to subclavian, carotid and vertebral arteries º Subclavian artery to carotid artery transposition º Subclavian artery-carotid artery bypass º Vertebral artery to common carotid artery transposition º Carotid-to-carotid artery bypass º First rib resection, infra-clavicular approach Practical exercise on THORACIC AORTA º Sternotomy / hockey stick incision; Pericardiotomy; Dissection brachiocephalic vein; Dissection aortic arch and supra-aortic branches º Bypass ascending aorta to brachiocephalic trunk; Re-routing; Supraaortic debranching/stump securing; Bypass ascending aorta to carotid and subclavian artery Practical exercise on THORACOABDOMINAL AORTA º Thoraco-phreno-lumbotomy, retroperitoneal approach, muscle sparing technique; Dissection of vagal/laryngeal nerve; Cannulation options º Descending aorta replacement; Reimplantation intercostal arteries º Reimplantation visceral arteries; Bypass to left renal artery or direct reimplantation º Type IV aortic repair Course Fee: CHF 1 950,- CME Credits: 13 Registration online:

The fees include: º Coffee-breaks and lunches º The social dinner º The disposable and didactic materials Venue Institute of Anatomy University of Bern Baltzerstrasse Bern Switzerland Credits CME-credits will be provided Welcome to Bern The UNESCO World Heritage City Bern, and its University, have a rich cultural and scientific tradition. Wandering through the picture-postcard Old Town, with its provincial, laid-back air, it's hard to believe that Bern (Berne in French) is the capital of Switzerland. Bern s flag-festooned, cobbled centre, rebuilt in distinctive grey-green sandstone after a devastating 1405 fire, is an aesthetic delight, with 6km of covered arcades, hotels, cellar shops and bars, and fantastical folk figures frolicking on 16th-century fountains. In a nutshell, the lively student town Bern seduces and surprises at every turn. Its museums are excellent, its drinking scene dynamic and the end of the beginning of May is one of the best and most colorful months of the year in Bern. If you have the time, prolong your stay and visit nearby sights and attractions, including a trip into the Swiss mountains. Bern can be reached by airplane, train and by car. Bern has it s own small airport with direct flights to for example Amsterdam, Berlin, Hamburg, Londen and Münich but Bern is also easy to reach from Zürich Airport. Trains with direct connections from the airport to the capital depart every 30 mins.
