4 **Project Detail Project Title Development and dissemination of location specific protocol for integrated management of diseases of pomegranate in mid hills of Himachal Pradesh Name of PI : Dr. Kishore Khosla Name of Co-PI: Dr. SS Bhardwaj Funding Agency: Department of Science and Technology (DST) GOI, New Delhi Duration: Three years (Nov., 2010-Oct. 2012). Objectives: o To refine the existing generalized recommendations for developing integrated disease management strategy and validate its effectiveness in farmer s fields under varying agro-ecological situations. o To promote IDM amongst growers by laying out demonstrations in farmer s field and organizing field trainings. Summary (Finding) Recorded and identified the occurrence of Ceratocystis fimbriata and Fusarium oxysporum causing wilt disease of pomegranate. Recorded and identified the occurrence of bacterial fruit spot and canker disease caused by Xanthomonas axonopodis p.v.punicae. Recorded and identified the occurrence of Coniella granati, Phomopsis aucubicola and Phytophthora spp. causing fruit rot disease in pomegranate. Found Carbendazim (0.1%), propiconazole (0.1%) and benomyl (0.1%) highly effective against wilt pathogens (Ceratocystis fimbriata and Fusarium oxysporum) as soil drench. Found 10 percent leaf extract of Basooti (Adhotoda vasica) highly effective against Ceratocystis fimbriata and walnut (Juglans regia) extract against Fusarium oxysporum. Found carbendazim (0.05%), benomyl (0.05%), combi-product of captan and hexaconazole (0.05%), combi-product of Metiram and pyraclostrobin (0.05%), combi-product of Zineb and hexaconazole (0.15%) and cuman L (0.3%) highly effective against Coniella granati causing fruit rot disease in pomegranate. Achievements o Technology Developed (recommendations/ad hoc Recommendations) Following implementable technologies have been generated: i) For the control of Stemphylium blight disease of garlic, new chemicals viz., difenoconazole (Score percent and tebuconazole (Folicur 0.05 percent + mancozeb (Dithane 0.25 percent and percent were found highly effective and recommended. The studies of three years have revealed that with the appearance of the disease the fungicides be sprayed in the schedule of companion difenoconazole- tebuconazole at 15 days intervals along with sticker. The fungicide tebuconazole can be 0.05 percent

5 alone or if the disease is still high then in combination with mancozeb (0.25%). During March the infestation of thrips starts building up. The insect sucks the sap from the leaves and inflicts injuries and this damage predisposes the plants to Stemphylium attack causing leaf blight. Therefore it is advised that in the end of February or first week of March two sprays of insecticide first of malathion (300 ml) and after 15 days second spray of chlorpyriphos (400ml) per 200 L of water should be given to check thrips manifestation. Included in the package of practices of vegetable crops 2009 at pages ii) Use of Bordeaux 0.8 percent or copper oxychloride(blitox 50 percent or hexaconazole (Contaf percent at the appearance of the disease be given, 3-5 sprays at 15 days intervals have been recommended for the control of Alternaria spp. (A. mali and A. alternata) and Mycosphaerella spp. causing leaf spot/blight disease in apple nursery. Included in the package of practices of horticultural crops 2009 at page 66. iii) In peach and nectarine a new disease Peach scab caused by Cladosporium carpophilum have been recorded and identified. The primary source of inoculum is dormant lesions on one year old twigs; conidial production commences around bloom stage, peaks around shuck split stage and reaches 90 percent of cumulative seasonal total in 10 weeks of bloom. Infection occurs between shuck split and six weeks after shuck split and symptoms appear on fruits about 6-7 weeks after petal fall. The fungicides sulfur (Wettable sulfur percent, captan (Captan percent and chlorothalonil (Kavach percent were highly effective in controlling this disease. The fungicides have to be applied six times at 15 days intervals alternatively with fist spray starting at shuck split stage. iv) For the control of peach leaf curl disease caused by Taphrina deformans, the fungicide 0.3% was found better in its efficacy as compared to earlier recommended fungicide carbendazim (0.05%) as single spray at bud swell stage. In post infection, when the disease has already set in the orchard due to non application of the fungicide at the appropriate stage or due to inclement weather conditions favourable for the disease, the fungicide hexaconazole (Contaf per cent sprayed twice at 10 days interval has proved highly effective in checking the further spread of the disease. v) The following spray schedule for the control of spot and rot diseases of pomegranate has been developed and validated in the farmers fields/orchards under high and low rainfall areas. Start spraying at the 2 nd to 3 rd week of June with companion (mixture of carbendazim 12% and mancozeb 0.25% - copper oxychloride (Blitox % - captan (Captan % - companion (0.25%). The fungicides are to be sprayed at 20 days interval along with stickers.
