5 Arch Public Health 2010, 68 (Supplement 1), S47 Relative validity of repeated 24h recalls using EPIC-SOFT for estimating nutrient intakes among the Belgian population by De Keyzer W 1, Huybrechts I 2, De Henauw S 1,2 Objectives To evaluate the relative validity of two non-consecutive 24 hour recalls (24HR) using EPIC- Soft SOFT by comparison with a 5-day estimated food records. Methods A total of 175 subjects, aged 15 years and more, were recruited to participate in the study. Two EPIC-SOFT guided 24HR s were performed with an interval of 2-6 weeks. After completion of the second interview, subjects were instructed to register their food intake by a 5-day food record. Structured diaries containing different food groups at 6 consumption occasions were provided. Even though different food composition databases were used for calculating macronutrient (10) and micronutrient (5) intakes, priority was given to national food composition databases. Nutrient data was adjusted for within person variability by applying Nusser statistics. Paired T-test was calculated to assess difference between the two methods. Spearman correlations, weighted Kappa s and Bland & Altman plots were used to investigate their agreement. Results In total 127 subjects (56 males, 71 females) completed both 24HR s and the 5-day food record. Mean age was 50.2 years (SD= 24.7) ranging from 15 to 91 years. All days of the week were equally distributed. For the total sample, no significant differences between the two methods were found for protein, carbohydrates, starch, dietary fibre, alcohol, water, potassium and calcium. In general, higher intakes of nutrients were seen in the 24HR. Nutrients not falling within a 10% difference for both methods were total energy, total fat, fatty acids and vitamin C. Correlation coefficients and weighted kappa s were significantly higher for men versus women. Conclusions Our results demonstrate fair agreement of the EPIC-SOFT assisted 24HR methodology when compared to a 5-day food record. For most of the nutrients investigated it can be considered as a suitable instrument for assessment of intake in a context of food consumption surveillance. 1 University College Ghent, Faculty of Health Care Vesalius, Department of Nutrition and dietetics, Ghent, Belgium 2 Ghent University, University Hospital, Department of Public Health, Ghent, Belgium
