If skin contact occurs, remove contaminated clothing and wash skin with running water. If irritation occurs seek medical advice. If in eyes, wash out immediately with water. In all cases of eye contamination it is a sensible precaution to seek medical advice. Rinse mouth with water. If swallowed, give a glass of water to drink. If vomiting occurs give further water. 2 Notes to physician: Treat symptomatically. Gastric emptying may be indicated for poisonings. Perform gastric lavage after intubation. Give activated charcoal and a saline cathartic. Treat convulsions with intravenous (IV) diazepam. 5. Fire-fighting measures Specific Hazards: Fire-fighting advice: Suitable Extinguishing Media: Combustible solid. On burning will emit toxic fumes. Accidental release measures SMALL SPILLS: Wear protective equipment to prevent skin and eye contact. Collect and seal in properly labelled containers for disposal or re-use. LARGE SPILLS: Wear protective equipment to prevent skin and eye contact. Cover with damp absorbent (inert material, sand or soil). Sweep or vacuum up, but avoid generating dust. Collect and seal in properly labelled containers, bags or drums for disposal or re-use. If contamination of crops or waterways has occurred advise emergency services or State Department of Agriculture. 7. Handling and storage Handling advice: Storage advice: Avoid skin and eye contact. Keep out of reach of children. Store in the closed, original container in a dry, cool, well-ventilated area out of direct sunlight. Store in a locked room or place away from children, animals, food, feedstuffs, seed and fertilisers. 8. Toxicological information No adverse health effects expected if the product is handled in accordance with this Safety Data Sheet and the product label. Symptoms or effects that may arise if the product is mishandled and overexposure occurs are: Ingestion: Eye contact: Skin contact: Inhalation: Swallowing can result in abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, salivation, facial flushing and fever. Larger exposures may result in drowsiness, irritability, lack of muscular co-ordination and tremor. Exposure to the dust may cause discomfort due to particulate nature. May cause physical irritation to the eyes. Repeated or prolonged skin contact may lead to irritation. Breathing in dust may result in respiratory irritation. Toxicological Data: No LD50 data available for the product. For the constituent METALDEHYDE: The severity of acute effects from metaldehyde exposure varies between animal species. Effects on animals follows the same clinical course however, actual levels will vary between animal species. In humans exposure to metaldehyde at the following levels may result in associated symptoms; traces - salivation, facial flushing, fever, abdominal cramps, nausea and vomiting. up to 50 mg/kg - drowsiness, heart beat alterations and irritability. 50 to 100 mg/kg - lack of muscular co-ordination and increased muscle tone. 100 to 150 mg/kg - convulsions and tremor. 150 to 200 mg/kg - muscle twitching. 400 mg/kg - death. In comparison the minimum oral lethal dose for: dogs = 100 mg/kg. Page 3 of 5

4 rats = 227 mg/kg. mice = 200 mg/kg. guinea-pigs = 175 mg/kg. rabbits = 290 mg/kg. geese = 800 mg/kg. chickens = 500 mg/kg. ducks = 300 mg/kg. cows = 200 mg/kg. sheep = 300 mg/kg. goats = 783 mg/kg. horses = 60 mg/kg. donkeys = 360 mg/kg. Dermal LD50 (rat): >5,000 mg/kg. Inhalation LC50 (rat): >15 mg/l/4hr. SKIN: Non-irritant (rabbit). Not a skin sensitiser (guinea pig). EYES: Mild irritant (rabbit). For chronic toxicity metaldehyde was not genotoxic when assessed in a number of in vitro and in vivo genotoxicity assays. A long term reproduction study was conducted in rats which were fed 0, 200, 1000 and 5000 ppm metaldehyde in the diet. A dose-related development of paralysis was observed in females. Males showed an increase in liver weights. Metaldehyde affected reproduction only at maternally toxic doses. Metaldehyde was not carcinogenic or teratogenic at any dose tested. ADI (Acceptable Daily Intake) for humans is mg/kg bw/day. 12. Ecotoxicological information Avoid contaminating waterways. For METALDEHYDE: Environmental fate, persistence and degradation: Metaldehyde is aerobically and anaerobically degraded in soil to carbon dioxide and water. It is not readily biodegradable. Aquatic toxicity: Harmful to aquatic organisms. Risk of bioaccumulation in an aquatic species is low. Log Octanol/Water Partition Coefficient: hr EC50 (Daphnia magna): >90 mg/l. 96hr LC50 (rainbow trout): 75 mg/l. Terrestrial toxicity: Oral LD50 (avian): 13. Disposal considerations Harmful to terrestrial species. 181 mg/kg (quail). Shake empty into application equipment. Do not dispose of unused product on site. If recycling, replace cap and return clean containers to recycler or designated collection point. If not recycling, break, crush, or puncture and bury empty containers in a local authority landfill. If no landfill is available bury the containers below 500 mm in a disposal pit specifically marked and set up for this purpose clear of waterways, desirable vegetation and tree roots.
