1 To be inducted as a Fellow of the Society is the highest honor ASN bestows. The ASN Fellows program, in existence since 1952, recognizes the following members of the Class of 2014 for their distinguished careers in the science of nutrition. LYNN BAILEY, PHD University of Georgia Dr. Bailey completed her PhD degree and post-doctoral training at Purdue University before beginning her research and teaching academic career at the University of Florida. Over the course of 30 years, Dr. Bailey has conducted human metabolic studies to determine how much of this vitamin is required to maintain optimal status as assessed by biomarkers for individuals of all ages including pregnant women and the elderly. Dr. Bailey has served on a large number of advisory panels including the FDA Folic Acid Advisory Committee whose recommendation led to folic acid fortification of the US and Canadian food supply. She also served as a member of the Institute of Medicine s Committee that revised the dietary intake recommendations for folate and other B vitamins. In addition to her extensive research journal publications and book chapters, Dr. Bailey has edited two editions of the book Folate in Health and Disease. Dr. Bailey s research and teaching accomplishments have been recognized by many prestigious awards including the USDA Superior Achievement Award, the March of Dimes Agnes Higgins award for accomplishments in the area of fetal and maternal medicine. In addition, the American Society for Nutrition selected Dr. Bailey as the recipient of the Centrum Science Award for research accomplishments in the area of human nutrition. The University of Florida recognized Dr. Bailey for both her research and teaching accomplishments by a series of awards including Teacher Scholar of the Year, the highest award given to a faculty member. Dr. Bailey was named Head of the Department of Foods and Nutrition at the University of Georgia in 2011 where she is enjoying the opportunities associated with her leadership position and initiating new collaborative folate-related studies. ADAM DREWNOWSKI, PHD University of Washington Dr. Adam Drewnowski is the Director of the Center for Public Health Nutrition and Professor of Epidemiology at the School of Public Health, University of Washington. He is Adjunct Professor of Medicine; joint Member of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, and the Director of the UW Center for Obesity Research. Dr. Drewnowski received MA degree in biochemistry from Balliol College, Oxford and PhD in psychology from The Rockefeller University in New York. Following postdoctoral training at the University of Toronto, Dr. Drewnowski joined the faculty at The Rockefeller University. He then directed the Human Nutrition Program at the University of Michigan before moving to the University of Washington in Dr. Drewnowski s sensory research has addressed the role of sugars and fats in shaping food preferences. His later studies focused on the relation between nutritional quality of the diet and diet cost, with emphasis on affordable healthy foods and social and geographic disparities in obesity rates. Dr. Drewnowski has created several nutrient profiling models, including the Nutrient Rich Foods and the Affordable Nutrition indices, and is engaged in linking nutrient density of foods with their carbon cost. He has provided advice on nutrition and health issues to government agencies, foundations, and the private sector in the US and in France. Dr. Drewnowski is the 2012 winner of the Prix Benjamin Delessert; public trustee of ILSI Global, and board member of the ILSI Research Foundation. 2 DAVID HEBER, MD, PHD University of California, Los Angeles David Heber is the Founding Director of the UCLA Center for Human Nutrition at the University of California, Los Angeles. After graduating from UCLA Magna Cum Laude in Chemistry in 1969 and from Harvard Medical School in 1973, he completed his internship at Beth Israel Hospital and his residency and fellowship training at Harbor General Hospital in Torrance, California. He completed his PhD in Physiology at UCLA in Dr. Heber has been on the faculty of the UCLA School of Medicine since 1978 and is currently Emeritus Professor of Medicine and Public Health and the Founding Chief of the Division of Clinical Nutrition in the Department of Medicine. Dr. Heber is a past Director of the American Board of Nutrition and past chair of the Education Committee of ASN predecessor, the American Society of Clinical Nutrition. He was also Chair of the Medical Nutrition Council of the American Society for Nutrition and a Counselor and Fellow of The Obesity Society. He has written over 230 peer-reviewed scientific articles and over 80 book chapters, and two professional texts: Dietary Fat, Lipids, Hormones and Tumorigenesis and Nutritional Oncology, a 49 chapter text published by Academic Press in 1999 with a second edition in He edited the clinical section of the CRC Handbook of Foods and Nutrition in 2013 and has co-edited a text entitled Immunonutrition in March Dr. Heber is included in the 2000, 2001, 2002, listings of The Best Doctors in America, based on a survey of over 35,000 doctors throughout the nation, and has been listed in Who s Who in America since He has written four books for the public: Natural Remedies for a Healthy Heart by Avery Publishing Group in 1998, The Resolution Diet, by Avery Publishing Group in 1999, What Color is Your Diet? published by Harper Collins/Regan Books in 2001, and the L.A. Shape Diet published by Harper Collins/Regan Books in His main research interests are obesity treatment and nutrition for cancer prevention and treatment. VAN HUBBARD, MD, PHD National Institutes of Health Van S. Hubbard, MD, PhD is Director, NIH Division of Nutrition Research Coordination and Associate Director for Nutritional Sciences, National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, National Institutes of Health. Dr. Hubbard has been at NIH since 1976 in various positions and attained the rank of Rear Admiral and Assistant Surgeon General within the Commissioned Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service prior to transitioning to civilian service in He is chair of the NIH Nutrition Coordinating Committee and serves as the NIH representative on numerous federal and non-federal committees. From , Dr. Hubbard served as the Senior Advisor to the Secretary of DHHS on Obesity. Additionally, he serves on the Committee on Nutrition of the American Academy of Pediatrics and as Professor of Pediatrics at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. Dr. Hubbard has received many honors such as the Certificates of Appreciation from FDA, DHHS, and USDA. He was awarded the USPHS Outstanding Service Medal, three Meritorious Service Medals, and the Surgeon General s Exemplary Service Medal, two DHHS Secretary s Awards for Distinguished Service and four NIH Director s Awards. He was elected an Honorary Member of the American Dietetic Association (2000); received The Obesity Society s George Bray Founders Award (2002); The Obesity Society s Mickey Stunkard Lifetime Achievement Award (2010); and the 2012 Barney Sellers Public Policy Award from the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition. His major research interests are clinical nutrition, obesity, cystic fibrosis, and nutritional modulation of disease risk. He received a B.S. in Chemistry from Union College (1967), a PhD in biochemistry and MD from MCV, Virginia Commonwealth University (1974). He completed an internship and residency in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Minnesota Hospitals and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. 78 TH AWARDS CEREMONY APRIL 27,

3 JOSEPH R. PROHASKA, PHD University of Minnesota Medical School Joseph Robert Prohaska (Joe) was born in Chicago, Illinois and spent his primary and secondary education years in Dixon, IL and New London, WI. His scientific and educational development was influenced greatly by his parents. He attended the University of Wisconsin, Madison and Oshkosh and in 1968 graduated cum laude, BS in Chemistry and Zoology. After two years in Vietnam serving with a combat engineer battalion Joe began graduate studies with William W. Wells, Department of Biochemistry, Michigan State University and completed his PhD in He then spent three postdoctoral years with Professor Howard E. Ganther, Nutritional Sciences Department UW Madison. In 1977 Joe joined the School of Medicine at the University of Minnesota, Duluth, rose through the academic ranks in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and was promoted to full professor in Joe enjoyed a sabbatical leave in the laboratory of Dr. Roger Sunde, University of Missouri. Joe retired in During his career he trained ten graduate students and 40 undergraduates with funding from NIH and the USDA. Joe s lab investigated many aspects of nutritional biochemistry of copper resulting in publication of over 140 peer-reviewed manuscripts and more than 100 published abstracts. He was an active participant in medical school education where he developed and taught the nutrition component of the basic science curriculum. Joe is a member of the graduate faculty of the University of Minnesota in five programs. He has served on many national peer-review grant committees and has been an invited speaker at numerous international and national symposia. He has been a member of ASN since 1978 serving on several committees, as an Associate Editor of The Journal of Nutrition (JN), and as editorial board member of both JN and Advances in Nutrition. He continues his passion for knowledge about copper physiological chemistry. Joe is an avid fisherman. KATHLEEN RASMUSSEN, SCD Cornell University Dr. Kathleen M. Rasmussen is Professor of Nutrition in the Division of Nutritional Sciences at Cornell University, where her research focuses on maternal and child nutrition, particularly pregnancy and lactation. She and her students have established that interventions to improve maternal nutritional status among undernourished women can increase the volume and improve the composition of their milk and, thereby, improve infant nutritional status. They have also shown that women who are overweight or obese at conception have problems establishing and maintaining breastfeeding and have babies who are heavier at one year of age than those of normal-weight women. Dr. Rasmussen s research has been recognized by the Agnes Higgins Award of the American Public Health Association. She has been a member of expert committees at the Institute of Medicine and was the chair of the Committee on Reexamination of IOM Pregnancy Weight Guidelines as well as a committee to disseminate these new guidelines. Since 1987, Dr. Rasmussen has directed an NIH-sponsored training grant in maternal and child nutrition. She was the first recipient of the ASN Excellence in Nutrition Education Award (supported by Cengage Learning) and has also received the ASN Dannon Institute Mentorship Award. Continuing her long interest in mentoring future leaders in nutrition, Dr. Rasmussen serves as the principal faculty member at the Dannon Nutrition Leadership Institute, which she helped to develop in As President of the American Society of Nutritional Sciences from , Dr. Rasmussen led its reformulation in the merger between ASNS, the American Society for Clinical Nutrition and the Society for International Nutrition Research. She has also served the President of the International Society for Research on Human Milk and Lactation. At Cornell, her leadership has included being the Associate Dean and Secretary of the University Faculty and also an elected member of the Board of Trustees. 34 AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR NUTRITION & FOUNDATION

4 BEATRICE ROGERS, PHD Tufts University Beatrice Rogers is Professor of Economics and Food Policy at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University. She served as Academic Dean for 13 years, and is currently Director of the school s Food Policy and Applied Nutrition Program. Dr. Rogers interest in global food and nutrition started with an overland trip across Asia immediately after completing her undergraduate degree. That exposure to hunger and poverty in the world led her to shift focus to economics, with the goal of understanding how to improve access to food among vulnerable populations. Her dissertation on consumer food price subsidies was based on two years implementing a national nutrition/consumption survey in Pakistan. After completing her PhD, she worked briefly for USAID, and then joined the Center for Employment and Income Studies at Brandeis as a Senior Research Associate researching the US Food Stamp Program. In 1982, she joined the faculty of the newly established School of Nutrition at Tufts University, where her research has focused on economic determinants of household food consumption in low-income countries, including price policy, food aid, food price subsidies and income transfers, and female household headship as a determinant of intrahousehold food allocation. Her current research compares the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of supplementary foods for preventing and treating MAM in children, identifying programmatic and behavioral reasons for differences. Her most recent study investigated how the benefits of food assistance programs can be made sustainable after food is withdrawn. She has conducted research on effective interdisciplinary graduate curricula to prepare global food policy professionals. In 2009 she received the school s Distinguished Faculty Award for her mentorship of doctoral students. Dr. Rogers has served on the NAS Committee on International Nutrition and on the Board of the Nevin Scrimshaw International Nutrition Foundation, and serves as Secretary/Treasurer of the Global Nutrition Council of ASN. BARBARA SCHNEEMAN, PHD University of California, Davis Dr. Barbara O. Schneeman is Professor Emeritus at the University of California, Davis. She served as the Director of the Office of Nutrition, Labeling, and Dietary Supplements at the Food and Drug Administration. In that position, she oversaw the development of policy and regulations for dietary supplements, labeling, food standards, infant formula, and medical foods and served as U.S delegate to two Codex committees (Food Labeling and Nutrition and Foods for Special Dietary Uses). From , she was a member of the nutrition faculty at UC Davis, and served in several administrative roles, including Chair of the Department of Nutrition and Dean of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. She has been a visiting scientist at University of California, San Francisco, and Assistant Administrator for Nutrition in the Agricultural Research Service of USDA. She received her BS degree in Food Science from the UC Davis, PhD in Nutrition from the University of California, Berkeley, and postdoctoral training in gastro-intestinal physiology at Children s Hospital in Oakland, California. Professional activities include participation in Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committees, the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academies of Science (NAS), committees for NAS, USDA, Food and Agricultural Organization, World Health Organization, the American Society for Nutrition, and the Institute of Food Technologists. She has been Associate Editor for The Journal of Nutrition and on several editorial boards including Nutrition Reviews, The Journal of Nutrition, and Journal of Food Science. Her professional honors include Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Carl Fellers Award from the Institute of Food Technology, the FDA Commissioner s Special Citation and the Harvey W. Wiley Medal, the FDA Merit Award, the Samuel Cate Prescott Award for research, Future Leader Award, and several honorary lectureships. She is recognized for her work on dietary fiber, gastro-intestinal function, development and use of food-based dietary guidelines, and policy development in the area of food and nutrition. 78 TH AWARDS CEREMONY APRIL 27,

5 DALE A. SCHOELLER, PHD University of Wisconsin Dale Schoeller received his bachelor s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in Chemistry (1970) and his PhD from Indiana University in Analytical Chemistry (1974). It was during his PhD training with John Hayes that he was trained in stable isotope mass spectrometry. He continued his training during a post-doctoral fellowship with Peter Klein at the Argonne National Laboratory where he helped develop the stable isotope methodology for 13 C breath tests for hepatic xenobiotic metabolism and nutritional assessment. He joined the faculty in Medicine at the University of Chicago where he also served as Associate Director of the Clinical Nutrition Research Unit. He also chaired the Committee on Human Nutrition and Nutritional Biology from In 1997, he joined Nutritional Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He was the first to apply the doubly labeled water method in humans to measure body composition and total energy expenditure. His work in human energy metabolism contributed to a revision of human energy requirements based on expenditure after it was shown that prior requirements based on intake were in error to systematic under reporting of energy intake. He research also helped refine the study of the development of obesity and of weight loss treatment. He was President of the American Society of Clinical Nutrition in 2003 and later served as Treasurer and member of the Executive Committee of the Obesity Society from 2008 to He was recipient of the Mead-Johnson Award from the American Society of Nutrition Sciences in 1987 for his developmental work on the doubly labeled method, the Herman Award from the American Society of Clinical Nutrition in 2000 for his work on the energetic of weight loss and obesity, and the Atwater Award from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Agricultural Research Service in 2005 for his body of work on human bioenergetics. ALLISON A. YATES, PHD, RD U.S. Department of Agriculture Allison A. Yates, Associate Director of the Beltsville Area of the U.S. Department of Agriculture Agricultural Research Service (ARS), has a BS in public health (dietetics) and an MS in public health (nutrition) from UCLA, earned a PhD from U.C. Berkeley in nutrition, completed a dietetic internship at the Wadsworth VA Hospital, and is a registered dietitian. After completing a postdoctoral fellowship at Berkeley, she served on the faculties of two universities where her research focused on human protein and energy requirements before becoming the founding Dean of the College of Health and Human Sciences at the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg. In 1994 she became Director of the Food and Nutrition Board (FNB) of the Institute of Medicine, where, over a 10-year period, she led the expanded approach to establishing human requirements and recommendations for nutrients, now termed Dietary Reference Intakes. During this period, while overseeing the activities of the FNB, she also served as study director for the only congressionally mandated study on how to improve the food safety system in the U.S., and directed a study at the request of the FDA to design a framework for evaluating the safety of dietary supplements. Dr. Yates was Director of Nutritional Sciences at ENVIRON Health Sciences Institute, Arlington, VA, prior to her appointment in 2006 to the US Senior Executive Service as Director of the USDA/ARS Beltsville Human Nutrition Research Center, where she has been responsible for a joint 4-year research project with the Republic of Korea on health benefits of the US Dietary Guidelines and Korean-style food pattern diets. In 2011 she was appointed the Associate Director for the Beltsville Area region of ARS.
