BRASSINOSTEROIDS Abiotic Stress Tolerance In Tomato And Wheat Plants Qazi Fariduddin, Ph.D. Associate Professor Department of Botany, Faculty of Life Sciences Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh, India
STRESSES External conditions that adversely affect growth, development, or productivity Stresses trigger a wide range of plant responses: - altered genes - expression in cellular metabolism - changes in growth rates and crop yields Biotic - caused by organisms Abiotic Due to an excess or deficit in the physical or chemical environment Biotic and abiotic stresses can reduce average plant productivity by 65% to 87%, depending on the crop type
Abiotic Stress Environmental conditions that can cause abiotic stress: water-logging drought high or low temperature excessive soil salinity inadequate mineral in the soil too much or less light Heavy metal toxicity
Plant-Environment Interactions Abiotic stress Biotic stress
Factors determining stress responses Type of stress Number of times the plant is subjected to stress Duration Severity Additional/synergistic effects of multiple stresses Genotype Developmental stage
Stress tolerance mechanisms Avoidance mechanisms prevents exposure to stress Tolerance mechanisms permit the plant to withstand stress Acclimation alter their physiology in response to stress

Conclusions Exposure to varied low temperatures in two contrasting tomato varieties resulted in adaptive responses. Response of the cultivars to BRs was better in S-22 than PKM-1. S-22 accumulated higher content of lycopene than PKM-1. Out of the two analogues of BR tested against a range of low temperature stress in tomato plants, EBL emerged as more effective than HBL EBL treatment was more effective for yield and quality improvement of tomato cultivars under low temperature stress.
Response of wheat to brassinosteroids under combined stresses of aluminum and salt
Objectives To assess the impact of combined Aluminium and salt stress on wheat To explore the best suited mode of application of brassinosteroids (BRs) analogues under combined stresses (Al and Salt stress) To examine the role BRs on the enzymes of proline metabolism under combined stress of aluminium and salt To study the involvement of BRs in regulating the antioxidant system under these stresses To dissect the expression of proteins in wheat under aluminium and salt stress in the presence and absence of BRs Salt Stress & Al Stress BRs Salt Stress + Al Stress
Experimental Layout Seeds of seven different verities of wheat were sown in sand culture DBW LOK DBW- 17 LOK All these varieties treated with different levels of Al (5.0, or 10.0 mm) and/or NaCl (100, or 150 mm) for successive 3 days at 10 day stage of growth Tolerant and sensitive varieties were selected

Schematic model of action of EBL on the induction of combine stress of aluminium and salt in wheat plants
Conclusions Our results provide a novel, global insight into the mechanism of EBL influence on combination of Al and salt tolerance in plants. Metabolic pathways that are shared and curtailed under variable overlap of stress regimes up-expressing the protein regulators will help to unravel further insight for understanding the molecular hierarchy of stress signalling. In addition to this, lots of information gathered via proteomic approach could be used to establish multi-stress tolerant varieties of crop plants.
