6 LEADERSHIP AND INNOVATIVE SERVICES FOR NUTRITION At Nutrition International, we are passionate about tackling one of the greatest health challenges facing the world today: malnutrition. A dedicated team of global experts, we work with stakeholders around the world to create effective and sustainable solutions for hidden hunger. Luz María De-Regil Vice-President of Global Technical Services, Chief Technical Advisor Our Global Technical Services team has advisors in our Ottawa headquarters, as well as in regional and 10 country offices throughout Africa and Asia. These experts provide technical oversight and quality assurance to our programs and business models. The team s purpose is to drive continuous improvements in the quality of Nutrition International s programs and enable the efforts of global partners through technical leadership, evidence and data, and innovative products and services. Together we work to improve the health of those who need it most especially women, adolescent girls and children. For over 25 years, our organization has been contributing to the global evidence base, along with our partners, to invest resources where they will have the most impact. We help translate evidence into strong policies that provide high-quality nutrition programs to serve the world s most vulnerable people. Our ground-breaking work is helping Nutrition International have a stronger and more meaningful impact. Why? Because it contributes to and is guided by policies informed by sound science and best practices in programming. We will continue to move forward with proven methods while exploring new approaches, forging meaningful technical partnerships, and sharing knowledge through relevant products and services to nourish life around the world. Building on our experience with both governmental systems and separate procedures for survey development and implementation, Nutrition International has been carefully reviewing the time required to complete surveillance activities in terms of staff and timelines, variability of the quality of results across our

7 TECHNICAL RESOURCES FOR INTERNATIONAL NUTRITION STAKEHOLDERS Nutrition Technical Assistance Mechanism (NTEAM) Did you know? Nutrition International invests in innovative approaches to scaling up nutrition and develops products and services that help overcome capacity gaps. NTEAM provides timely, coordinated and expert technical support for a wide range of nutrition-specific and nutrition sensitive-interventions. Carol Broderick Portfolio Director Myriam Martinez Junior Technical Officer NTEAM is a mechanism through which governments and other nutrition actors can access Nutrition International s technical expertise. NTEAM deploys a diverse team of global experts and robust systems to manage: Technical Assistance: NTEAM provides one-off or long-term technical assistance to countries and others who need support and capacity building to achieve nutrition objectives; Task Forces: NTEAM works with the world community to identify nutrition issues that need championing, bringing together global experts, with special perspectives and varied backgrounds, to tackle the issue together; Knowledge Translation: NTEAM s portfolio development includes education, data services, tools and the dissemination of research for global learning. Folate Task Team Homero Martinez, NTEAM Lead, Folate Task Team Jessica Poulin Knowledge Translation Officer Nutrition International believes that so much more is accomplished when you have the right global experts working together towards a common goal. This was the premise behind our championing of Task Forces for nutrition. The Folate Task Team, for example, comprises a group of global partners under the leadership of Nutrition International, all joined together to facilitate access to folate-related knowledge products, identify priority actions to reduce folate-sensitive neural tube defects, build laboratory capacity for the assessment of folate status, and support research in this critical area. countries, and requirements of new interventions. We have invested significant resources in developing survey modules to ensure that data collection adequately responds to our program monitoring frameworks and reporting requirements: Nutrition Intervention Monitoring Surveys (NIMS) Launched in 2017, NIMS is a new and innovative approach to how nutrition intervention surveys are conducted. NIMS allows for uniform collection and storage of survey data to facilitate shorter intervals in collection, timely quality assurance and cross-country analyses. NIMS relies on harmonized electronic data collection tools to speed up survey development and reporting, and uses these tools during supervisory visits to improve regular program monitoring and reporting, more effectively informing global surveillance efforts.

8 Technical Assistance for Nutrition (TAN) Project Did you know? Nutrition International currently delivers technical assistance in up to 20 Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Movement countries, in order to improve their capacity to design, deliver, and track the progress of nutrition programs and to generate, learn from and adopt knowledge of what works. Loretta MacKinnon Project Director Anne Babcock Global Project Manager Lauren Stanley Junior Project Officer Binu Anand Project Manager, Asia Eadara Srikanth Project Officer, Asia Jacob Korir Project Manager, Africa Daouda Mbengue Senior Project Officer, Francophone Africa Sarah Kihianyu Project Officer, Africa TAN seeks to build the capacity of countries that have joined the SUN Movement to help improve the nutritional status of their populations especially women and children. TAN provides key technical assistance and support tailored to meet country needs, including developing and costing multi-sectoral national nutrition plans; development of nutrition legislation, policies and guidelines; data and evidence generation for informed decision making, as well as building the capacity of in-country SUN Focal Points in implementing, monitoring and evaluating these plans. For current opportunities to help countries translate their global targets into concrete action, visit: DOING WHAT WORKS: FROM EVIDENCE TO IMPACT FOR NUTRITION The OMNI tool Outcome Modelling for Nutrition Impact (OMNI) Tool Launched in 2018, the OMNI Tool is an evidence-based and practical application to drive improvements to program design and transparent results reporting. The tool can model and succinctly define expected nutrition impacts from potential and varied programming scenarios options. Modelling results can guide platform, intervention, and programming choices. The OMNI Tool opens the door to larger conversations about what is possible, is a powerful tool for advocacy, and helps policy makers with critical decisions around use of financial and program resources.

9 RESEARCH AND EVALUATION In assessing our existing programs and testing innovative approaches to program delivery, Nutrition International generates the compelling evidence for nutrition interventions and scale up. We focus on the continuum of implementation research to improve the reach and equity of micronutrient interventions. A sample of recent research and evaluation collaborations include: IMPLEMENTATION RESEARCH PROOF OF CONCEPT Is it safe, efficacious & potentially feasible? PROOF OF IMPLEMENTATION How best can it be implemented in real-world settings? Affordable? INFORMING SCALE-UP How best to integrate into health and food systems? PROOF OF CONCEPT Folic acid Dose Response Efficacy Trial In collaboration with the South Australia Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI), University of British Columbia and Universiti Putra Malaysia, NI and partners aim to respond to the question: will a weekly dose of folic acid be sufficient to improve folate stores associated with Neural Tube Defect prevention? This efficacy trial will fill a critical evidence to support to scaling up of the WHO s recommended dose for weekly iron and folic acid supplementation. PROOF OF IMPLEMENTATION Integrated Nutrition and Deworming Program: Improving Adolescent Health & Nutrition Bangladesh (DAWN) With support from and collaboration with NI s N-LIFT, NI crafted the design of the DAWN program to test the effectiveness of weekly iron and folic acid (WIFA) supplementation in improving iron nutrition of adolescents and its delivery through the secondary school platform in Bangladesh. The project integrates nutrition, deworming, WASH, and behaviour change communication interventions within the education and health sectors and aim to improve the health, wellbeing, and gender equality of adolescents in Bangladesh. INFORMING SCALING UP Community-Based Maternal and Newborn Health and Nutrition project in Ethiopia, Kenya, Senegal and Niger. This project aimed to identify key factors to integrate essential nutrition intervention into antenatal care in four African countries with different health system s models. Based on it s findings, the Ministry of Health in each country have committed to scaling up at least a part of their respective projects.
