1 NORTH EAST & NORTH CENTRAL LONDON HEALTH PROTECTION UNIT APRIL 2011 MONTHLY SUMMARY CASES 415 cases were to NENCL HPU during April In addition, the unit managed 24 incidents, 98 enquiries and 149 contacts. Table 1 shows the number of cases per PCT/LA. had the highest number of cases (65) and Barking & Dagenham the lowest (16). Table 2 shows the rates per 100,000 population. Enfield PCT had the highest rate, (20) and Waltham Forest, Barking & Dagenham and the lowest (9 each). The overall rate for NENCL HPU sector was 14. Table 3 shows rates by age band and gender. Males accounted for 54% of cases, females 46%. The rate per 100,000 population was highest in females under 1 year. 2 Table 4 lists all infections by status ( or ). Of the 415 cases in April, 262 (63%) were laboratory. The organism with the highest number of cases was campylobacter with 75 cases, equating to 18% of the total cases. Measles 60 cases of measles were in April 2011, compared with 18 cases in the same month in Just under half (28) were laboratory. Of the 12 cases of measles in, 5 were (age range 7 months to 32 years), 4 of these 5 were unvaccinated and one adult being up to date with vaccines in Sweden. Most cases remain sporadic across the sector but spread within educational establishments is expected over the coming weeks. NENCL HPU has undertaken a sector-wide communications exercise. Letters have been circulated to GPs, Walk-In-Centres and hospitals (including GUM clinics) as well as all state and private schools. All cases associated with an educational establishment are being thoroughly investigated and Directors of Public Health will be kept informed if clusters emerge. Meningococcal Disease There was a 3-fold increase in the number of meningococcal cases in April when compared with April 2010, from 5 cases to 17, however, the number of cases has remained unchanged. Scarlet Fever There was also an increase in the number of scarlet fever cases during April, 31 cases were and 8 were laboratory. Scarlet fever is currently more prevalent in the community and this increase is reflected across the London sector. 3 INCIDENTS 24 incidents were during April They are divided into 2 categories Outbreaks and TB incidents (where screening of contacts outside the household needs to be carried out). There were 19 outbreaks across 7 PCTs. 47% of the outbreaks were due to norovirus and 52% occurred in care homes. The family and close contact tracing has not identified any potential source of infection, or any evidence of ongoing transmission. 180 students in the year group as well as the case's teachers are to be offered screening as the case attended school for 2-3 months whilst symptomatic. W/Forest College/University Hospital School College/University A case of smear positive pulmonary TB who attends a college in Walthamstow. 17 students and 8 staff members will be offered screening once culture is. Up to 250 immunocompromised patients who attend a sexual health service may have been exposed to smear positive case of TB. The index case attended the clinic a number of times whilst symptomatic. Screening clinics are underway. A case of smear positive TB in a student who is now on treatment. Awaiting culture results, but seems likely to be pulmonary TB. Screening of students and staff who have been in close contact with the case will be undertaken at the school in early June. A case of smear and culture positive pulmonary TB has been identified in a student who attends a college in. Both staff and students at the college who have had significant and close contact with the case will be screened.
