7 DIAGNOSTIC MEDICAL SONOGRAPHY (1950 Hours) What is Diagnostic Medical Sonography? Chances are you or someone you know has undergone an ultrasound exam. Whether it is to get a first glimpse of a developing baby in the womb or to determine the risk of a heart attack, sonography is widely used to gain advanced insight into the inner workings of the body. In fact, ultrasound is the most utilized form of diagnostic imaging available today, after x-ray exams. Unlike X-ray, sonography is a radiation-free imaging modality. A diagnostic medical sonographer is a highly-skilled professional who uses specialized equipment to create images of structures inside the human body that are used by physicians to make a medical diagnosis. The process involves placing a small device called a transducer against the patient s skin near the body area to be imaged. The transducer works like a loudspeaker and microphone because it can transmit sound and receive sound. The transducer sends a stream of high frequency sound waves into the body that bounce off the structures inside. The transducer detects sound waves as they bounce off the internal structures. Different structures in the body reflect these sound waves differently. A computer analyzes these sounds to make an image of the structure(s) on a monitor that can be recorded on videotape. MNTC Diagnostic Medical Sonography Career Major? 14 Diagnostic Medical Sonography Career Major Immunization/Screening Requirements The following are required before entering the Sonography career major. You must present documentation of the following immunizations, titers, and records to the MNTC Health Education Office before being accepted into the Sonography career major. Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) You must have documentation of receiving 2 MMR vaccinations or positive titers (shows immunity) to Rubella and Rubeolla. Many students choose to receive another MMR rather than have the titers done to help reduce expenses. Hepatitis B Vaccination The hepatitis B vaccination is a series of 3 injections given over a 6-month period. The cost ranges from $60 - $200. If you wish, you may sign a declination form and not take the series. The area of work you are pursuing puts you at risk for coming into contact with infected blood and body fluids, so think seriously about refusing this protective vaccination. You must have had the first shot of the series or have a signed declination statement to be accepted into the program. Tuberculosis Skin Test You must have had 2 negative TB skin tests within the last 365 days or (for positive reactors) a negative chest X-ray. To receive 2 PPD skin tests and have them checked will take about 2 weeks and should be completed before receiving any other vaccination. Varicella Immunization You must have documentation of receiving 2 doses of the vaccination, or have a positive titer (showing immunity to chicken pox). Having had the disease is not proof for our clinical sites. Tetanus (TD) You must have had a tetanus booster within the past 9 years FLU Agreement Student must take the seasonal flu vaccination (at my own cost) or obtain required documentation from my physician if I am prevented from taking it due to a medical decision/condition prior to attending clinicals. * A Drug Screen is administered upon notification of acceptance to the program. 14

18 Thinking about a career in Diagnostic Medical Sonography? Here are some things you may want to investigate while making your decision. Think about shadowing a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer for a few days. You may want to shadow in a hospital setting and also in a clinic or outpatient setting. Visit these web sites: American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers This is the organization that tests and credentials Diagnostic Medical Sonographers. Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers This professional organization publishes the Journal of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (JDMS) and protects the interests of the profession. American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine Mission Statement: The American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine is a multidisciplinary organization dedicated to advancing the art and science of ultrasound in medicine and research through its educational, scientific, literary and professional activities. A few others: According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Faster than average employment growth is expected. Job opportunities should be favorable. Employment change. Employment of diagnostic medical sonographers is expected to increase by about 18 percent though 2018 faster than the average for all occupations. As the population continues to age, there will be an increasing demand for diagnostic imaging. Additional job growth is expected as healthcare providers increasingly utilize ultrasound imaging as a safer and more cost-effective alternative to radiological procedures. Ultrasound imaging technology is expected to evolve rapidly and spawn many new Sonography procedures, enabling sonographers to scan and image areas of the body where ultrasound has not traditionally be used. Hospitals will remain the principal employer of diagnostic medical sonographers. However, employment is expected to grow more rapidly in offices of physicians and in medical and diagnostic laboratories. Health care facilities such as these are expected to increase in number because of the strong shift toward outpatient care, encouraged by third-party payers and made possible by technological advances and less expensive ultrasound equipment that permit more procedures to be performed outside of hospitals. Job prospects. Job opportunities should be favorable. In addition to job openings from growth, some openings will arise from the need to replace sonographers who retire or leave the occupation permanently. However, job opportunities will vary by geographic area. Sonographers willing to relocate will have the best job opportunities. Sonographers with multiple specialties or multiple credentials also will have good prospects. 18
