PATIENT COUNSELING 1
Welcome West Virginia Eye Consultants provides you with the most technically advanced and compassionate care at seven convenient locations in Southern West Virginia and the Tri-State area. The Charleston office is a 10,000+ square foot facility located in the heart of downtown Charleston, WV 501 Summers Street Charleston, WV EYES (3937) 2
REFRACTIVE ERRORS Why can t you see clearly? There are 3 reasons you might need to wear glasses: Nearsightedness (myopia) Farsightedness (hyperopia) Astigmatism 3
NORMAL EYE Light rays are directed through the cornea, the lens, and then are projected onto the retina at the back of the eye. You can see clearly at all distances. 4
REFRACTIVE ERRORS, NEARSIGHTEDNESS(myopia) The cornea and lens bend incoming light rays so they focus in front of the retina. Distant objects appear blurred. 5
REFRACTIVE ERRORS, FARSIGHTEDNESS (hyperopia) The cornea and lens bend incoming light rays so they focus behind the retina. Close objects appear blurred. 6
REFRACTIVE ERRORS, Astigmatism The eye does not focus light evenly. You get more than one focus and the lights do not get together on one point. Objects appear distorted at all distances. 7
Solution How can you correct these errors? With Z-LASIK the surface of the cornea is reshaped by laser. After the procedure the light rays focus onto the retina and you can see clearly again. 8
How does Z-LASIK work? Z-LASIK is a two-step process Step 1: Creating a thin flap with the bladeless femtosecond laser. 9
How does Z-LASIK work? Step 2: The excimer laser corrects your vision. 10
How does Z-LASIK work? See the Z-LASIK video animation 11
ADVANTAGES OF Z-LASIK Increased comfort The procedure is painless and the head is not fixed during the procedure. Fast procedure The Z-LASIK procedure is done in less than ten minutes for both eyes. Safety Technologically most advanced procedure, based on experience from over 2 million procedures. Short recovery time, instant improvement Immediate results only minutes after the procedure. 12
RISK AND SIDE EFFECTS Like any other surgery, Z-LASIK can have certain risks and side effects. However, they are minimal and occur very rarely. General side effects with femto-lasik Halo effects (circular reflections around light sources at night time) Dry eye syndrome (observed in 4% of all treated eyes) Inflammation (may affect the vision and cause pain for a few days) Z-LASIK solution larger treatment zones larger treatment zones light pulses with low pulse energy Occurrence with Z-LASIK rarely further reduced never reported 13
