3 What is PRK? PRK was the first laser eye surgery used to correct for common vision problems. When a patient undergoes PRK, an excimer laser is used to reshape the cornea. For mild to moderate cases, this process removes only 5-10% of the overall thickness of the cornea, which is about the thickness of 1-3 human hairs. Depending on the refractive error, the cornea will be reshaped to allow incoming light to focus properly on the retina resulting in clear vision. Good Candidate To determine if you would make a good candidate for PRK, a consultation with your eye doctor is required. PRK differs from other laser eye surgery procedures and Diamond Vision will suggest the best option for you depending on your unique needs.

At Diamond Vision, we offer PRK (photo refractive keratectomy) as a solution procedure for your vision problems. Before LASIK came along, PRK was developed to correct for refractive errors caused by misshapen corneas by using a medical laser.

5 What to Expect After a routine eye exam to determine that your eyes are in good health and your prescription is stable, you will meet with one of our award-winning surgeons to discuss the procedure. To start, anesthetic eye drops are administered in order to numb the patient s eye and prevent any discomfort during the procedure. Next, a device is used to hold the eyelids open so that there is no chance of blinking during the procedure. Before using the laser to reshape the cornea, the epithelium (surface cells) must be removed in preparation. At Diamond Vision, we utilize a rotating brush (Amoils Brush) to prepare the cornea rather than an alcohol and laser-assisted method. This helps greatly to reduce the amount anxiety felt by the patient by minimizing the time spent under the laser.

6 What to Expect Once the cornea has been prepared, the surgeon will move the laser in place for the procedure. The laser is guided by a computer which is programmed to track the patient s eye movement and prevent any mistakes. The computer will automatically center the laser on the patient s visual axis and will pause if the eye moves from this position. The laser with will remove the unwanted cornea tissue that has caused the vision errors. The procedure takes less than 5 minutes per eye. After completion, a contact lens is placed on the treated eye and is to be worn for the first 3 to 5 days. This is because the epithelium needs time to heal unaffected by eyelid interference. Some mild discomfort is normal as your eye heals and antibiotic and pain relieving drops can be prescribed.

7 What to Expect You should expect to attend several appointments during the first few months after surgery, beginning with the first day after surgery. Due to the nature of the surgery, recovery of vision is typically slower than that of LASIK and your best vision may not be obtained for up to 3 months following surgery. *Individual recovery times and results may vary.

8 PRK Affordability The initial surgical consultation is free and this will be the time which procedure will be best for your vision. You will be charged $250 for your pre-operative measurements and if you elect for the surgery, it will be applied to the total cost of the procedure. We are currently offering significant discounts for PRK that make it more affordable than ever. At your free consultation, you will learn about financing opportunities (Credit Care) that will help you see clearly sooner than you think. Payment must be made in full before the procedure. All major credit cards are accepted, as well as bank checks. Personal checks are accepted only one week prior to surgery. Debit cards are only accepted for payments of $500 and under, depending on your debit cards daily withdrawal limit.
