9 POINT OF CARE ULTRASOUND The use of ultrasound has significantly increased in the past decade. Equipment now provides better images at less cost and ultrasound has now evolved to become an almost essential tool for the front-line clinician. Point of Care Ultrasound (PoCUS) has become central to the assessment and care of patients in a range of healthcare settings. It is utilised by a diverse group of doctors, nurses and other practitioners. PoCUS offers more efficient care and improved diagnostic accuracy by extending clinicians diagnostic skills with bringing investigations to the bedside in emergency medicine, intensive care, anaesthesia, trauma care, obstetrics and midwifery, as well as in safe placement of vascular access. Unlike almost any other modality, clinical PoCUS is one of the most highly operator-dependant skills, limited by time constraints, user experience and misleading images known as artifacts. To become proficient in PoCUS requires extensive time devoted to both the theoretical and practical aspects of ultrasonography, especially if the Clinician wishes to become proficient in all aspects of PoCUS. Fortunately, most Clinicians do not require (or need) such extensive exposure. We have developed a range of clinically focused pathways to provide the point of care practitioner a solid grounding in the basics of point-of-care ultrasound. Our programs are based on current best practice in medical education with a focus on positioning clinicians for success in their workplaces. Our courses are structured around clinical applications, allowing common assessments across professions and clinical disciplines. PoCUS performance is an integrated competency. ie it requires synchronous performance across multiple domains of practice - cognitive, communication and psychomotor. AIU pathways provide the elements required to use ultrasound effectively in a clinical application by teaching a step by step approach to the following areas of practice: Study selection in clinical context Image acquisition ( +/- procedural skill performance) Image interpretation Integration of findings into clinical care We will ensure that you come away from our programs with a well-founded grounding in the basic techniques. These techniques will form the strong foundation for a safe and effective ultrasound practice into the future. With acknowledgement to: Associate Professor Victoria Brazil Director of Teaching & Learning We believe that more hands on experience prepares our students better for real life cases. 9

10 PROGRAM OUTCOMES All AIU programs are specifically designed to enable the practitioner to achieve the following 9 outcomes: 1. Explain the underpinning physical principals of ultrasound including artifacts. 2. Acquire ultrasound images using a methodical process of transducer manipulation techniques. 3. Improve ultrasound images using a variety of system controls. 4. Improve ultrasound images using a variety of patient manoeuvres. 5. Interpret ultrasound images and clips, by recognising the normal, variants and not normal ultrasound appearances. 6. Document and save the ultrasound findings, including a focused written report if necessary. 7. Identify the parameters of safe application of ultrasound in medical diagnosis. 8. Identify suitable infection control techniques required. 9. Identify the limitations of ultrasound and explain when to on-refer. 10

11 TAILORED EMPLOYER NEW ENTRANT SONOGRAPHER COURSE One of the major problems facing busy ultrasound departments is the ability to fast track new entrant sonographers with enough practical experience to be a fully functioning member of the team. All too often, pressure of the daily workload, erratic nature of cases and availability of experienced trainers mean that new sonographers take quite some time to gain the confidence and skills needed to work independently. At the AIU we specialise in assisting employers to fast track their sonographer and offer several options ranging from 1-3 weeks dedicated training for 2-4 students. THE AIU INTERNATIONAL PRESENCE Ask about our international courses held in: HONG KONG SINGAPORE NEW ZEALAND For more information, please call Kim on
