However,formorerelationalconstructssuchasfriendship,liking,humor,considerateness,and interestingness,perceiverscantypicallydifferentiateothers uniqueevaluations(depaulo, Kenny,Hoover,Webb,&Oliver,1987;Levesque,1997;Kenny,1994). Whydoesdyadicmeta"accuracyexistforrelationalconstructs?KennyandDePaulo (1993)theorizeditisonlybecausepeoplebelievetheirevaluationswillbereciprocatedbyothers. Whenthisassumptionisvalid,theycanintrospectabouttheiropinionsofotherstoinferothers likelyopinionsofthem.kennyanddepaulo(1993)arguedthatthedataarelessconsistentwith asecondmechanism sensitivitytorelationship"relevantcues becausethesecuesaremanaged activelyandinterpretedselectively.wepresentthefirstevidenceforthissecondmechanismby demonstratingdyadicmeta"accuracywhencontrollingforpresumedreciprocity. 5 Dyadicmeta"accuracy3 Methods Participants Theentirefirst"yearMaster sinbusinessadministration(mba)classofamajor universitycompletedmeasureshalfwaythroughtheirfirstsemester.the239individuals(69% male,58%uscitizens)weresplitinto16roundrobinsof14"15peopleeach. Procedure Giventheimportanceofbuildingrelationshipswithotherswhocanhelpstudents careers,participantsrecordedtheirperceptionsof valueasafutureprofessionalcontact (scale 1=muchlessthanaverage,5=average,9=muchmorethanaverage)foreachindividualinthe roundrobin.theyalsoprovidedmeta"perceptions,i.e.,howtheybelievedeachotherpartyrated them. Analysis Topreservestatisticalindependence,thegroupwastheunitofanalysisforsignificance tests.consistentwithpastwork,wereportaccuracyandreciprocityaswithin"subjects correlations(depauloetal.,1987). Results InterpersonaljudgmentswereanalyzedusingtheSocialRelationsModel(SRM;Kenny& LaVoie,1984).Examiningperceptions,20%ofvarianceresultedfromconsistencyinhow perceiversusedthescale,13%fromconsensusinratingsoftargets,and67%fromdyadiceffects andmeasurementerror.examiningmeta"perceptions,37%ofvarianceresultedfromconsistency inhowperceiversbelievedtherestoftheworldviewedthem,4%fromperceivers consistent viewsofothersasharshvs.softjudges,and59%fromdyadiceffectspluserror.usingformulas fromlashleyandbond(1997),allcomponentsweresignificantatprep>.999.

Didparticipants dyadicmeta"accuracyresultfromaheuristicofpresumedreciprocity alone?wefirstconductedmediationanalyses(baron&kenny,1986),withfigure1illustrating results.steponewasestablishingdyadicmeta"accuracy,i.e.,theassociationbetween perceptionsofatarget P(T) andmeta"perceptions T(P(T)). Steptwowasestablishingdyadic reciprocity,i.e.,theextenttowhichpeoplegenuinelyreciprocatedeachothers opinions,orthe correlationbetween P(T) and T(P), r#=.40,t(15)=19.4,prep>.999,d=10.01.stepthreewas establishingperceiveddyadicreciprocity,i.e.,theassociationbetweenperceivers opinionsofothers andtheirmeta"judgmentsofwhatothersthinkofthem,orthecorrelationbetween T(P) and T(P(T)), r#=.70,t(15)=38.2,prep>.999,d=19.7.inthefourthstep,whenreciprocitywas includedinthemodel,thecoefficientforaccuracydecreasedfrom.44to.19,sobeltestz=5.45, prep>.999.however,dyadicmeta"accuracyremainedsignificant,r#=.19,t(15)=12.3,prep>.999,d =6.4.Reciprocitywasapartial butnotfull mediatorofdyadicmeta"accuracy. Wetheninvestigatedwhetherpeoplearesensitivetorelationship"relevantcuesor indiscriminatelyapplythereciprocityheuristic.thosepeoplewhoperceivedgreaterreciprocity wereindeedthosewhoserelationshipsweremorereciprocated,r(237)=.33.thissuggests presumedreciprocityisnotmerelyaheuristicthatperceiversapplyequally,butisitselfacue thatpeopleusetoachievedyadicmeta"accuracy. Discussion WetestedandsupportedKennyandDePaulo s(1993)theoreticalargumentthat presumingreciprocityenablesperceiverstoachievedyadicmeta"accuracy.projectingtheir

TheabsenceofcompletemediationprovidessuggestiveevidenceforKennyand DePaulo s(1993)secondmechanism whichtheyproposedyetdismissed.wesuggest perceiversalsousefeedbackfromtheirsociallandscapetodeterminetheirrelativestandingwith others evenifsuchfeedbackfrominteractionpartnerstendstoberareandnoisy(kenny& DePaulo,1993;Swann,Stein"Seroussi,&McNulty,1992).Individualsappeartobeatleastpartly sensitivetotheirregardinothers eyes.thisfindinghasimportantimplicationsbysuggesting peoplehavemoreinsightintotheirrelationshipsthanpreviouslybelieved.futureresearch shouldseektounderstandhowweachievethissensitivity.becausedyadicmeta"accuracycan helpusknowwhichrelationshipstopursueandwhichtoavoid,theseresultshaveimportant implicationsfortheformationofsocialnetworks. Ourresultsalsoextendevidencefordyadicmeta"accuracytoanothertypeofjudgment, thatofprofessionalvalue.onemightexpectdyadicmeta"accuracyacrossrelationalconstructs forwhichitisacceptable andevennormative thatpeopleholddifferentschemasabouthow tojudgeothers.inthecaseofpersonalitytraits,presumablymostperceiversinterpretparty" goingasasignofextraversion.however,weallhaveourowntasteforwhoislikable,funny, interesting,orpotentiallyavaluablecontactinthefuture.
