11 Jenni Karl, CV 11 TEACHING & ADVISING EXPERIENCE Teaching Assistant 2011, 12, 13 Senior Seminar in Neuroscience: Brain, Psychiatric, and Neurological Diseases (4 th year course, Dr. Ian Q. Whishaw) Description: A self-directed course where students learn by doing. Upon completion, students know how to search and evaluate scientific literature, identify key theories and concepts relevant to their chosen topic, prepare scientific presentations using appropriate media, and write a research proposal suitable for submission to a federal tri-council granting agency for Master s level support. The aim is to prepare students for graduate work in experimental neuroscience, but also provide them with critical communication skills applicable to any profession. 2010, 11, 12, 13 Brain & Behaviour (2 nd year course, Dr. Ian Q. Whishaw) Description: A large introductory course of approximately 290 students that serves as a gateway to higher-level neuroscientific studies. Students are introduced to the neural processes that underlie complex behaviour through a wide range of topics including neuronal structure & function, the action potential and neuronal transmission, sensorimotor and perceptual systems, and higher-level behavioural and cognitive functions such as sleep, memory, addiction, and language Movement Disorders (3 rd year course, Dr. Claudia Gonzalez) Description: An in-depth investigation of sensorimotor system organization and the neural processes that underlie motor action. Students explore how a break down at various levels of these systems can produce behavioural impairments in major sensorimotor disorders such as Parkinson s disease, Huntington s disease, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, etc Cellular and Molecular Correlates of Neurodegenerative Disease (3 rd year course, Dr. Anthony Hannan) Description: An examination of the cellular and molecular processes that underlie normal brain function and behaviour. Emphasis is on understanding genetic and environmental influences on these processes and how they can produce neurodegenerative states as seen in Alzheimer s disease, Diabetic neuropathy, Multiple Sclerosis, etc Introduction to Psychology (1 st year course, Dr. Margaret Forgie) Description: A broad survey of the theories, concepts, and methods applied in various fields of psychology. Topics include sensation and perception, emotion and motivation, developmental psychology, personality psychology, and social psychology.
