5 Week Two Instruction Page 5 Chapter Two: Social Science Approach 2:50 PM Social Science Approach- communication focused on the individual not as a society or a group people Behaviorism- Branch of psychology that focuses on observable behavior. Naturalistic- real-life situations such as a classroom or shopping malls for surveys and interviews Quantitative methods- Methods can be used to ask specific questions in numerical sense (how much, how long, ect.) Demand-Withdraw- Interaction pattern (when one partner tries to change their partner)

7 Chapter Two: Interpretive Approach 3:28 PM Interpretative Approach- Term used for humanistic Study Rhetoric- Communication used to influence the attutitides or behaviors of others (looking at text and speech by others) Humanism- a system of thought that celebrates human nature and its potential Ethnographic- Field Study where researches actively engage with participants that include observations and interviewing Week Two Instruction Page 7

8 Week Two Instruction Page 8 Chapter Two: The Critical Approach 3:13 PM The Critical Approach is used to not only understand human behavior but to change society In order to reach the ultimate goal of changing society, critical researches believe that one must understand the societal forces that shape how people come into contact and communicate. This approach attempts to reveal the complexities of a culture and the ways that people actively participate in their culture and resist its powerful influences Textual analysis- a method of analyzing cultural products (TV, Media, ect.)

Bill O'Riley Fights Humanist Outline the topics below and how could these topics be studied from the humanist approach AND outline how the topic could be studied from the behaviorist approach. Critical Points to Remember: Review the definitions and differences between humanism and behaviorism. Remind students that rhetoricians are also called humanists and elocutionists are also called behaviorists.
