19 th Annual Laurel Highlands Undergraduate Psychology Conference University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg Greensburg, Pennsylvania April 23, 2016 Time Program Schedule 10:00-10:30 am Registration and Refreshments (Smith Hall Lobby) 10:30-11:15 am Invited Address Dr. Jennifer Roth, Carlow University, Brain Networks for Working Memory and How to Improve Performance 11:15-12:15 pm Research Paper Session I 12:30-1:15 pm Research Poster Session 1:30-2:15 pm Lunch (Hempfield Room, Chambers Hall) 2:30-3:00 pm Research Paper Session II
Paper #1 (11:15) Research Paper Session I (11:15-12:15) The Effect of Police Presence on Levels of Imagined Fear and Safety Brandi Rohal and Torre Remish Studies have found that feelings of safety are not increased by police presence (Van De Veer, De Lange, Van Der Haar, Karremans, 2012). Given the media's recent portrayal of police misconduct in large cities, it was questioned whether that coverage had affected college students in a small rural town. The hypothesis was that viewing scenes with a police officer present would increase imagined fear and decrease the perception of safety. Thirty-one college students were shown PowerPoint pictures of mundane social scenes with or without a police officer. Students were asked to put themselves in the pictures and reflect on their perceived levels of safety and fear. Results of the study showed that police presence significantly reduced perceived levels of safety (p =.01), but did not significantly increase imagined fear. Paper #2 (11:30) Conscientiousness and Procrastination's Relation to Morningness and Eveningness Tendencies Emilie Heinl, Veronica Baierl, and Elizabeth White Horne and Ostberg (1976) have defined morningness and eveningness as the time of day at which people feel at their peak. There is evidence that has revealed a fluctuation in morningness and eveningness preferences from adolescence to adulthood. Further research has shown that significant personality differences exist between morning and evening people (Wang & Chartrand, 2015). Therefore, the hypothesis of the present study was that as college students progress from underclassmen to upperclassmen, they will change from evening types, displaying decreased conscientiousness and increased procrastination, to morning types, displaying increased conscientiousness and decreased procrastination. Participants were given the Conscientiousness Scale, Studying Procrastination Scale, and Pure Procrastination Scale, along with a self-report measure to determine morningness vs. eveningness orientation. The findings revealed that the co rrelation between Morningness-Eveningness and conscientiousness and Morningness- Eveningness and procrastination was nonsignificant for both underclassmen and upperclassmen.
Paper #3 (11:45) Fact or Crap: Those Higher in Perfectionism Are More Likely to Conform Renee Belisky, Catherine Hoover, and Nathan Mori The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between perfectionism and social conformity, using a methodological approach similar to that of Asch (1951). The Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale was used to assess level of perfectionism. Participants then answered a series of T/F questions, taken from the game Fact or Crap. Their answers were given both privately (on paper) and publicly (moving to the left or right side of the room). Halfway through the public game, confederates were signaled specific answers intentionally opposing the participants written answers, and the participants public answers were recorded. The hypothesis was that those scoring high in perfectionism would be most likely to conform to the confederates answers that were intentionally inconsistent with their written answers. A significant correlation between perfectionism and conformity was not found. Paper #4 (12:00) Author: Creativity Produced in Young Adults in Relationship to Handedness Kimberly M. Elter Saint Francis University Dr. Renee Bernard The purpose of this study was to determine if mixed-handers (individuals who have a high level of communication between the right and left hemispheres of the brain) were more creative than strong-handers (individuals with a dominant brain hemisphere lateralization, either right or left). The Edinburgh Handedness Inventory and the Wallach and Kogan Creativity Tests were completed by 21 participants from the Saint Francis University 18-to 25-year-old student population. These two tests were analyzed to determine if there was a relationship between creativity and the handedness of an individual. Mixed-handers were hypothesized to score highest in fluency and uniqueness within creativity. Participants who scored as the most mixed-handed within the study produced the greatest fluency in the Wallach and Kogan Creativity Tests, which partially supported the hypothesis. However, participants who scored as the most mixed-handed did not produce the greatest number of unique responses, and did not support the hypothesis.
Research Paper Session II (2:15-3:00) Paper #5 (2:15) The Effects of Gender, and Gender Education on Tendencies to Victim Blame Kendra E. O'Donnell Kutztown University Dr. Jason Lanter This study examined the effect of gender and gender education on levels of agreement with gender hierarchy and victim blaming. Using a repeated measures design, participants completed a survey assessing their level of agreement with gender hierarchy, and the amount of blame they placed on a victim after reading a vignette describing a scene of sexual assault. Approximately half of the participants were enrolled in gender education classes and the other half were not. The students were surveyed at the beginning of the 2015 Fall semester and were surveyed again at the end of the semester. Male participants placed more blame on the victim than the female participants and reported higher levels of agreement with gender hierarchy than female participants. Enrollment in gender education classes showed no significant effect. Both class groups reported lower levels of agreement with gender hierarchy and tendencies to victim blame in the post semester results. Paper #6 (2:30) Literature Review of Efficacy of EMDR Inpatient Treatment for Adolescent Females Diagnosed with Major Depression Alexandra R. Woods Mount Aloysius College Antoinette R. Petrazzi Woods, Ph.D., LPC The purpose of the present literature review is to explore the existing scholarly literature regarding the efficacy of EMDR inpatient treatment for adolescent females diagnosed with major depression. First, I will provide an introduction to the topics of EMDR inpatient treatment for adolescent females diagnosed with major depression, as well as operational definitions for each of the aforementioned, and discussion of the target population, inpatient adolescent females. Next, I will examine the extant scholarly literature, including but not limited to, background research. Specifically, I will identify the history, major research contributions including advantages and limitations, and contemporary status of the research pertaining to the efficacy of EMDR inpatient treatment for adolescent females diagnosed with major depression. Finally, I will conclude by identifying gaps in the scholarly literature and potential needs for future research.
Paper #7 (2:45) Literature Review of Efficacious Electroconvulsive Therapy with Adult Females Diagnosed with Major Depression Kristine Martin Mount Aloysius College Antoinette R. Petrazzi Woods, Ph.D., LPC The purpose of the present literature review is to explore the existing scholarly literature regarding efficaciousness of electroconvulsive therapy with adult females diagnosed with major depression. Initially, an introduction to the topics of efficacious electroconvulsive therapy with adult females diagnosed with major depression, as well as operational definitions for each of the aforementioned, and discussion of the target population, adult females, will be provided. Then, the extant scholarly literature, including but not limited to, background research will be examined. Specifically, history, major research contributions including advantages and limitations, and contemporary status of the research pertaining to efficacious electroconvulsive therapy with adult females diagnosed with major depression will be identified. In conclusion gaps in the scholarly literature and potential needs for future research will be considered.
