5 Teacher s notes and key Level: elementary pre-intermediate. Aims: reading to check predictions completing a summary of a text saying figures making comparisons with as as talking about driving habits making spoken comparisons about people, things and facts. Timing: approximately 11/2 hours. Preparation: You may want to hide the title of the article until you reach task 2 to avoid revealing the answer to question 3 in task 1. Task 1 Speaking This prepares students for the topic they are going to read about and gives you the opportunity to see whether they need to work on comparison (see task 7). Question 3: Encourage students to make comparisons such as I think that b. is more dangerous than a. because wine is stronger than beer. There is an interactive version of this task Task 3 Saying figures The UK uses a strange mixture of imperial and metric measurements! Note that 70mph is approximately km/h. Task 4 Reading When they are driving at 70mph, drivers take 20% longer to react (6m longer to stop) if they are listening to sport on the radio. The maximum level of alcohol allowed is 80mg/100ml. Drivers stop more quickly with this level of alcohol than when they are listening to sport on the radio Page 5 of 7

You may need to point out that Do you think should? means Is it a good idea? Task 7 Grammar Students should have understood what as as means by this stage, but this task serves to double-check and to practise. 1. c. and d. 2. a) Anna is as old as Betty. or: Betty is as old as Anna. b) Death Valley is as hot as Saudi Arabia. or: Saudi Arabia is as hot as Death Valley. c) The cheetah is as fast as my car. or: My car is as fast as the cheetah. d) Tom is as heavy / fat as Jamel. or: Jamel is as heavy / fat as Tom. 3. a) Big Ben is not as old as the Eiffel Tower. b) Toronto is not as cold as Greenland. c) Sally is not as tall as Jane. d) A Rolex is not as expensive as a Ferrari Page 6 of 7
7 Task 8 Speaking Students need only discuss the points they know about and are interested in. You could suggest they choose five.
