Are you psychologically safe? Are you like me? Do you belong to my group? Do we have similar perspectives? Do you value my perspective? Are we equals? What are the power dynamics? Between us? 5 REFLECTIVE PRACTICE: GOALS EMOTIONS AND PERSPECTIVE TAKING For a specific family or session, cultivate 1. Awareness of your own emotional reactions 2. Awareness of personal and/or cultural biases 3. The capacity to recognize and regulate your own strong emotions prior to intervening Stance: Regulated and integrated Underlying CPP Principles: It is difficult to think clearly when you are triggered. Engage your frontal lobes before intervening. When affect is strong, the first affect to regulate is your own. It is best not to intervene without your frontal lobes When we are angry we are... 6 CONSTRUCT A SHARED FRAMEWORK WITH EACH CAREGIVER WHAT IS OUR THEORY? What are the strengths? Is there a problem? If so, what is the problem? What can be done and who should do it? What is the broader ecological, cultural, historical context? García Coll & Meyer, 1993; Ghosh Ippen, 2012 DIVERSITY-INFORMED PRACTICE: CONCEPT #2 CONCEPT 2: SHARED VS. DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVES SHARED VERSUS DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVES The success of our interventions and systems depends in part on whether those we serve share our assumptions and perspective. Ghosh Ippen, 2012 What happens when we do not agree? What are the cultural contributions to our perspective(s) Are there any historical power dynamics between our groups? (power, privilege, oppression) In this situation who has power and how do they use it? Does this have any connection to history? Ghosh Ippen,

8 UNDERSTANDING DAD S PERSPECTIVE WHEN SOCIALIZATION GOALS ARE NOT ALIGNED Understand and honor the socialization goal Independence Normal boy Able to go off with his peers Can you connect the dots between the intervention and the caregiver s socialization goal? He might need to win Can t just let him win. Need to earn it MOMENTARY RUPTURES: DIFFERENCE IN PERSPECTIVES DIVERSITY INFORMED PRACTICE: CONCEPT 3 DIVERSITY-RELATED CONFLICTS Diversity-related conflicts can arise when differences in our experiences lead us to hold different assumptions, values and perspectives. In a diversity-related conflict, we tend to view the other person as part of the problem and use stereotypes rather than consider the other person s perspective or the broader context
