The intended subject specific learning outcomes and, as appropriate, their relationship to programme learning outcomes 1) Knowledge and critical understanding of the mental disorders of childhood and adolescence, learning disability and the speech disorders (LO 1, 2, 3) 2) Knowledge and critical understanding of psychiatric disorders presenting in somatic form in general practice and hospital settings, including pain, somatoform disorders, and abnormal illness behaviour (LO 1, 2) 3) Knowledge and critical understanding of eating disorders (LO 1, 2) 4) Knowledge and critical understanding of the perinatal mental disorders (LO 1, 2) 5) Knowledge and critical understanding of neuropsychiatry, including organic mental disorders (LO 9) 6) Knowledge and critical understanding of the normal ageing process, and of psychiatric disorders in old age (LO 1, 2, 3) 7) Knowledge and critical understanding of the legal framework in which psychiatry is practiced, including consent to treatment, diminished responsibility, and the management of violent behaviour (LO 5) 8) Ability to formulate an appropriate diagnosis, using the appropriate technology (e.g., brain imaging and mapping techniques, interviews, test results) and take appropriate action, with reference to evidence based practice (LO 11, 13, 18, 21)

The intended generic learning outcomes and, as appropriate, their relationship to programme learning outcomes 9) Ability critically to make use of a variety of information sources, including I.T. & research journals to develop your knowledge (LO 33, 34) 10) Ability to communicate your diagnosis to patients in the clinical setting with respect for their capacities (LO 20) 11) Ability to communicate your diagnosis and assessment effectively in both written and oral form (LO 28) 12) Ability to communicate effectively with others in order to develop and manage a care plan (LO 28, 29) 13) Ability to apply the legal framework of Mental Health Act to the clinical setting (LO16) 13. A synopsis of the curriculum In this module, the application of psychiatric principles to practice with a variety of groups, in various settings, will be explored. Detailed consideration will be given to the diagnosis and assessment of disorders specific to age groups, such as the very young and the very old. Diagnosis, assessment and management of disorders which present in a variety of settings e.g., general practice, the general hospital, prisons and other forensic settings will be covered, and the legal framework provided by the mental health Act will be studied in detail. Reference will be made to clinical case examples from practice to illustrate the practice of psychiatry in the various settings in which are studied. Referral pathways, the organization of services, and specialist approached to the target population will be addressed to support your practice. 14. Learning and Teaching Methods, including the nature and number of contact hours and the total study hours which will be expected of students, and how these relate to achievement of the intended learning outcomes 30 contact hours will be supplemented by 270 hours of private study and workplace clinical practice in between seminar days. Formal teaching will be in lecture format, delivered by clinical specialists, and will be followed by tutor-enabled seminars in which reflection on practice will provide the link between theory and clinical practice. 16. Assessment methods and how these relate to testing achievement of the intended learning outcomes A written exam, including an essay, using examples from your clinical practice, which will assess your underpinning theoretical knowledge and ability to apply it to practice (50%) LO s 1-8, 13 A clinical practice exercise demonstrating your ability to apply clinical theory to practice, and your awareness of the legal and ethical implications of your proposed actions (30%) LO s 8, 10, 11, 12, 13 A workplace journal, demonstrating the application of learning to clinical practice which in the workplace, will provide supporting evidence to the practice assessment exercise (20%) LO s 9, 10, 11 12, Implications for learning resources, including staff, library, IT and space The module will be taught in the Trust Post-Graduate s. Students will have access to both NHS and Templeman library resources, which are already well supplied. Teaching will be provided by University of Kent Honorary and NHS Trust staff. 18.
