Krüger: African mental health professionals perceptions of Trauma-Informed Care for complex trauma victims Aims: Explore mental health professionals perceptions and attitudes towards trauma-informed care (TIC) as a potential model in African service delivery for complex trauma victims Develop a (new) network of mental health care collaborators in Africa, for research and postgraduate study 3

Krüger: African mental health professionals perceptions of Trauma-Informed Care for complex trauma victims (2) Methods: Five field trips entailing 12 visits to 11 African countries; teleconferencing to others Interviews with mental health professionals at grass-roots level and at academic institutions Qualitative focus groups & individual in-depth interviews Impact: National and international masters (2) and doctoral (2) students will be financially supported by this project for subsidiary projects, and jointly supervised New research capacity will be created Will fill the gap between Western biomedical research and treatment methods, and indigenous knowledge and community-centred healing practices in Africa, with a specific focus on mental health and complex trauma 4

Van der Westhuizen: Transfer of Positive Parenting Skills (TOPPS) to strengthen perceived parental fitness Aim: To examine to what extent parents perception of their parenting skills changes after taking part in the TOPPS intervention Methods: Parent-child pairs will be evaluated before and after TOPPS Psychiatry registrars will deliver the TOPPS course as a part of their community psychiatry clinical rotation (outreach) TOPPS entails, i.a., psychoeducation, cognitive-behavioural techniques and emotional regulation training for parents Impact: Improved parental fitness; improved diagnosis and management of child psychiatric problems; improved child psychiatric training of psychiatry registrars; enlargement of child psychiatry footprint in primary health care 5

Pooe: The role of childhood trauma and dissociation in substance abuse by psychiatric patients: a mixed methods study Aims: Determine the extent of substance related disorders in mentally ill patients who were subject to adverse childhood experiences or not To analyse whether dissociation mediates a predictive relationship between childhood trauma and an outcome of a co-occurring substance use disorder in mentally ill patients To explore the reasons why patients with mental illness abuse substances Method: Explanatory sequential design; three quantitative questionnaires; followed by selected in-depth individual interviews Impact: Improved management of patients with co-occurring mental illness and substance related disorders; support for caregivers; revision of policies; improved training of health sciences students 6
