1 The Art of Finding Balance: Identifying Personal Biases and the Effects on Clinical Practice and Professional Well-Being Emily Mozena, MA, CCLS, CTRS and Erin Willits, BS, CCLS April 6, 2018 Iowa Therapeutic Recreation Association, Cedar Falls, Iowa

2 Objectives Attendees will be given tools to evaluate their own biases and beliefs through a self-assessment Attendees will review the definitions as well as components of bias, compassion fatigue, burnout, gratitude, and life-work satisfaction in relation to the therapeutic recreation profession. Attendees will be able to utilize kindness, gratitude, and mindfulness as a way to create a selfcare plan to match their own goals.

3 Self-Assessment & Awareness Continued increase in stress levels across the United States can lead to ailments such as compassion fatigue and burnout, if not treated The simple act of being aware that stress and negative emotions have the ability to increase stereotypes can make providers more intentional in their interactions

7 Types of Bias Defined Bias- the negative evaluation of one group and its members relative to another (FitzGerald and Hurst, 2017) Implicit biases are unconscious behaviors that a healthcare provider may act upon without considering the intent or potential result of their actions (Byrne & Tanesini, 2015) An implicit stereotype is usually identified as associating members of a given social group with certain characteristics Examples: Black men and athleticism Women and a lack of mathematical ability

8 Implicit Bias Evidence shows that when factors such as socio-economic background, educational attainment, and underlying conditions are controlled for, healthcare workers do not provide equivalent levels of care to patients of different social groups. Provider behavior has been identified as an important contributor to disparities in health care (Burgess, Dovidio, & Saha, 2007) Exposure to an individual patient may trigger an implicitly held stereotype by a clinician

9 Stress, Compassion Fatigue, and Burnout Stress: A state of mental or emotional strain or tension resulting from adverse or very demanding circumstances (Merriam- Webster, 2017). Compassion Fatigue: Fatigue, emotional distress, or apathy resulting from the constant demands of caring for others Burnout: to wear out, become exhausted from overwork and overuse

10 Effects On Bias Healthcare providers are particularly susceptible to compassion fatigue and burnout. This indirectly affects job satisfaction, patient safety, and patient satisfaction (Benzo, Kirsch, and Nelson, 2017) Some of the most prominent recommended strategies to avoid implicit bias involve reducing tiredness and stress Simply being aware!

11 Comparison Stressed Health Care Worker vs. Happy Health Care Worker Providers who experience higher levels of positive emotion during clinical encounters are less likely to demonstrate bias VS

12 Mindfulness Mindfulness is defined as intentional present-moment awareness without judgement (Goodman & Schorling, 2012) Evidence shows that training in mindfulness can have the following outcomes on health care interactions: Decreasing provider burnout Increasing satisfaction Improving patient care

13 Gratitude and Happiness Gratitude represents your thankfulness for every experience, because each step of life can help you grow (Soot, 2015) 4 conditions to feel grateful: 1. You receive something of value. 2. The giver shared it voluntarily, not out of obligation. 3. Sharing took effort on the part of the giver. 4. The giver shared it with no selfish intent.
