It is possible that people can perceive and/or express information across time and space, in ways that go beyond the traditional five senses. It's possible that our minds interact with physical reality in ways we have only just begun to be able to measure adequately.

Challenge: These topics are inherently unscientific, and therefore all science done on them is pseudoscience

There are no unscientific topics, only unscientific methods

Challenge: These topics are inherently unscientific, and therefore all science done on them is pseudoscience Opportunity: Apply the scientific method

Challenge: The questions themselves, not to mention the findings, challenge cherished assumptions.

Consciousness is a biological feature of human and certain animal brains. It is caused by neurobiological processes and is as much a part of the natural biological order as any other biological features such as photosynthesis, digestion, or mitosis another world view is not an option. Anyone who has had even a modicum of scientific education after about 1920 should find nothing at all contentious or controversial in what I have just said ~ John Searle, of the University of California, Berkeley.

This paper has a great many merits, and solves methodological problems that has plagued previous research in this area If it addressed a less controversial topic, this might well be a publishable paper. Data not strong enough to overcome doubts based on the entire enterprise of traditional Western science.

Challenge: The questions themselves, not to mention the findings, challenge cherished assumptions. Opportunity: This is the heart of science to discover more by noticing things that require better models.

Challenge: Not amenable to scientific investigation impossible to study because invisible and possibly imaginary

Challenge: Not amenable to scientific investigation impossible to study because invisible and possibly imaginary Opportunity: We can make people aware that these topics are in fact amenable to scientific investigation, and encourage it.

Challenge: Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence should use different statistics or standards

"The more implausible the hypothesis -- telepathy, aliens, homeopathy --the greater the chance that an exciting finding is a false alarm, no matter what the P value is."

Challenge: Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence should use different statistics or standards Opportunity: Hold these studies to the same standards AND innovate better methods of evaluating significance

Challenge: If these phenomena existed, they would have been proven by now.

Challenge: We can't make it happen every time. Opportunity: Chemotherapy, ADHD medication, so many other complex issues. We must continue to innovate. Likely such innovation will enhance other fields and applications as well.

Challenge: It is very likely that our tools and methods may not have been sophisticated enough. Opportunity: Other complex phenomena have required significant investment of resources, time, and innovation...apply such resources to this.

Challenge: Not enough people doing this research. Opportunity: provide opportunities for people to study this without fear of ridicule or recrimination (ATF). Need training programs for scientists, and recruitment of new scientists.

Challenge: Underlying theory Opportunity: Interdisciplinary work. Collaborate with physicists, theoretical and experimental, etc. work on theory in parallel to demonstrations of results.

Big Challenge: Funding. The entirety of funding spent on the scientific investigation of this issue for all of history has been less than it costs to build one F16. Nuclear weapons spending is about 40 billion per year. We must increase funding for this research.

Increase rigor, register experiments with open science, post the data, always have a skeptic on board or independent analysis, BUT ALSO differentiate between exploratory and clinical trial experiments. Investigate new ways to enhance the rigor and meaning of our statistical analysis. Investigate mechanisms of action...moderators and mediators. Not only does it work, but HOW and WHEN does it work. Under what circumstances? Examine the effect of training, both direct, and meditation. Differentiate what can be done by everyone and by talented individuals, and find a way to evaluate and identify talented individuals, Psi Q

Look into the disruption of potential "blocking" functions, either through physical methods or through distracting or wearing out the frontal cortex/egoic/thinking mind. Experimenter/observer effects, and measurement of priming and biases. Massive experiments using mobile technology.citizen science. Test in laboratory and in real world situations. More work among interdisciplinary teams including experimentalists, theorists, religious scholars, etc Utilize 1 st person, second person, and third person methods Multi-site trials, simultaneous. A more coordinated strategic effort that pulls together the various labs doing this work.
