8 Hepatitis C and Mental Health: A Global and Indian Scenario Mridula Sharma* Moni Chaudhary** Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is the leading cause of chronic liver disease which affects over 150 million individuals worldwide. Without treatment, one third of patients will develop cirrhosis and complications of end-stage liver disease. In India, the majority of chronic liver disease and related deaths are attributable to hepatitis C. People with HCV infection are likely to have poorer health related quality of life, physical, mental, psychosocial and neuropsychiatric problems. These problems are challenges for management of HCV infection. Mental health treatment is considered crucial in the overall management of HCV infection. A supportive environment and a nonjudgmental healthcare team are required for optimal medical and psychological management of patients with HCV. We present a comparison between mental health of patients with HCV infection in India and globally. Female infanticide is the most common practice of killing girl child in mother s womb in the Indian society. Another common problem for women is sex discrimination which they face from their birth and continues till their death. Illiteracy, lack of proper education, responsible for household works, rape, sexual harassment at workplace, etc are some big issues for the women in India. Additionally, the severity of raising awareness to enable adolescents, their parents and teachers to identify signs of anxiety and depression cannot be denied. In fact, the schools can be the first line of defense for emotional and mental health disorders in adolescents. Serious corollary of youth depression, plus recent concerns over medication safety, prompt growing interest in the effects of youth psychotherapy. Depressive disorders are serious forms of psychopathology in adolescents. For some youngsters, early onset of depression is a precursor to serious mental health problems and psychosocial dysfunction in adulthood. Furthermore, some depressive episodes in adolescents may lead to potential or life-ending outcomes. Hence, a persistent effort must be made to bring the issue of mental health from the shadows and include this discussion in drawing room conversations from being spoken in hushed tones. It has always been portrayed as acting negatively in a person s life, negatively affecting his well-being and psychological health.where on one hand, DSM-III placed Narcissistic Personality Disorder in cluster B of the personality disorders (PDs), on the other hand Paulus and William (2002) presented Narcissism as a part of the Dark Triad of personality along with Psychopathy and Machiavellianism. A lot of confusion and controversy surrounds the question whether trait narcissism necessarily breeds dysfunctional and maladaptive behavior or whether people with trait narcissism can also lead a functional and psychologically healthy life. Resilience refers to the idea of an individual's tendency to cope with stress and adversity. This coping may result in the individual bouncing back to a previous state of normal functioning; Resilience is a dynamic process whereby individuals exhibit positive behavioral adaptation when they encounter significant adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats, or even significant sources of stress. Resilience is an important indicator of a person s psychological strength and over all well being. The present study aims to explore if Narcissists too can be resilient. Resilience in turn can act as a mediator and lead to the overall wellness of the individual. CD-RISC-25 by Connor & Davidson (2003) and Narcissistic Personality Inventory- 40 by Raskin & Terry (1988) will be used to measure resilience and narcissism respectively. This will be a comparative study and the results shall be discussed in the paper. Happiness is about what one thinks and believes, how one feels, how the problems affect. Today the focus is on our external lives, on getting and spending and having fun and then wonders why there is no happiness. But it s when the inner lives are serene that we are happiest and this is inner peace. Emotional intelligence is something that takes time, a conscientious effort, and constant practice to develop, but once it becomes habit it makes having meaningful relationships with people, both personal and in business, much easier and more enjoyable. A person with high EI would be less affected by his or her emotions is able to direct emotions in a positive direction, and have lower chances of feeling depressed. An individual with high EI would also be able to interpret other s moods correctly and therefore have a higher chance of forming close relation and getting social support in general.as a result, this individual should be less likely to feel powerless. In this paper an attempt is made to present a systematic approach to achieving greater happiness and overcoming life s inevitable adversities and suffering. The main approach has been to explore ways and means towards greater happiness and joy in life from the perspective of an individual human being. 18 Role of Emotional Intelligence among Sports Persons Savneet* VandanaNarwal** Emotions may play just as an important role in sport as any other factor such as the physical, psychological, social and spiritual factors related to sport performance. Given the relative dearth in research examining emotions or emotional intelligence in performance of sports persons, the present paper investigates the relationships between emotional intelligence capacities and its direct effect on self- regulation and mindset. Emotionally intelligent sports persons can get themselves into the appropriate emotional states for the demands of the situation. If the situation requires high arousal, emotionally intelligent people are good at getting themselves psyched up. It has been determined that emotional intelligence is essential in both individual and team sports and can be the key factor in an athlete s functioning within a team setting. Lane et al. (2009) found emotional intelligence scores correlated with frequent use of psychological skills. Athletes reporting frequent use of psychological skills (Thomas et al., 1999) also appeared to report high scores on the self -report emotional intelligence scale (Schutte et al., 1998). Keywords: Emotional Intelligence, Self regulation. *Head, Department of Psychology **B.A I GGSCW Sec-26, Chandigarh Personality Type, Passion and Aggression in Student Politics Priya Ahluwalia* Saloni Chawla** OBJECTIVE: To study the interplay of personality type, passion and aggression of party volunteers in student politics. METHODOLOGY: A sample of 130 student volunteers (Males = 50%; Mean age = years, SD = 1.194) were administered a structured questionnaire.it elicited scores on the Big Five Inventory 10(Rammstedt et al., 2007), Passion Scale ( Vallerand et al., 2003 ) and Aggression Questionnaire (Buss et al., 1992). RESULTS: Obsessive passion was negatively correlated to agreeableness (r= -0.28) and significantly correlated to aggression (r = 0.43).Harmonious passion was positively related to agreeableness (r=0.18) and negatively related to neuroticism(r= ). A gender wise analysis showed that males were both high on passion (p= 0.042) and obsessive passion ( p=0.001), whereas females were high on agreeableness (p=0.012). CONCLUSION: The present findings reveal that obsessive passion leads to aggression behavior. Thus, the love for one s political party which is rooted into one sense of identity may become a cause to maladaptive interpersonal behavior. Therefore, there is a need for student volunteers to become self aware and take initiative to balance their life for long-term healthy interpersonal relationships. The Double Discrimination of Women with Disabilities (WWD) - An Exploratory Study from Chandigarh Ruchi Sharma* Amarjeet Singh** Vanita Suri*** Sukhpal Kaur**** S BOOK

19 Introduction- Both men and women with disabilities are subject to stigma and discrimination. WWD are more disadvantaged, through the double discrimination based on gender and as well as on disability. They play the role of victim yet lack any say in the family and society. Objective- To explore stigma and discrimination related lived experiences of women with disabilities Methodology-100 WWD with age 15 years and above with at least 40% disability were enlisted from hospitals, colleges and banks of Chandigarh. A self-administered questionnaire was used to gather information regarding socio-demographic details, obstetric history and challenges faced by them. Results- Average age of respondents was 24 yrs. Many (42%) females had locomotor disability followed by blindness (32%), low vision (12%), hearing impairment (10%) and mental illness (4%). Average disability among respondents was 80%. Majority 68% felt that people made them feel ashamed due to disability. They felt upset with behavior of people. 70% felt talked down because of disability. Most (84%) of women felt society had no place for WWD and life would have been better had they not been disabled (89%). Several(52%) avoided social events because of hostile attitude of people. Their verbatim responses reflected a range of such problems eg- We are not considered part of society. People think we are useless and burden to society Pehle sabkehte the isseshadikaunkarega.shaadi hui to rishtedaarkehnelagge k donoaisehaipatanahinbacchahogabhi k nahin..bacchahua to bolnelggepalengeptanahinkaise?? Rishtedaar mere ko neglect kartehain, kehtehainiskodimaagkammhai Mere crutches ko kisi ne bola tha Jaaapnibandukenlekar aa..uss din meinbhutroyi par ab aadathogyihai!! Conclusion- A wide ranges of factors that exclude WWD from society exist. Stigma and discrimination associated with disability is amongst the major social factors that have seen WWD being worse marginalized. Academic resilience is a capacity to overcome acute or chronic adversity that is seen as a major threat to a student s educational development. These circumstances are not usual but they are more adverse and create harmful results like truancy, dropout and antisocial behaviour. This paper reviews the available scientific literature on psychosocial correlates of academic resilience. The objective of this review paper is to explore the concept of academic resilience and highlight major findings and identify gaps in the literature. Results of this literature review show that academic resilience is vital and should be enhanced in students for the promotion of their academic engagement and better school outcomes.
