Animal abuse in Malta By: Tamara Buhagiar If you don t like pictures of animal cruelty being posted on social media, you need to help stop the cruelty, not the pictures. You should be bothered that it s happening, not that you saw it (Marie Sarantakis) These strong words surely hit you like a cold shower. However they are the real, harsh truth. Animal abuse is becoming a serious problem in society today. We constantly find articles and pictures on social media which bother us for many reasons. Therefore, I am writing this article to raise awareness about this issue. My research was done online and consists of questionnaires which were sent to 100 respondents of different genders and ages. Most of the respondents (89%) consider animal abuse to be an issue in Malta. In fact, the age groups male 10-15, male 16-25, male 41-60, female 61+ agreed 10. The majority of the respondents (68%) also think that there is a link between animal abusers and violent crimes. They identified the following as animal cruelty: bird hunting (48%); hunting animals for certain features (77%); neglect (85%); keeping farm animals in uncomfortable areas (68%); keeping wild animals in Page 3 of 28
zoos (49%); using animals in circuses (58%); bull fighting (84%); dog fighting (97%); cock fighting (89%); horse racing (35%); abandoning animals when one no longer wants them (83%) and using animals to test medicine and beauty products (7). 89% of the respondents think that if abusers are caught hurting animals they should be given a jail sentence. They also agree with the following statements; horses should be used for race purposes(34%); bird hunting is a legitimate hobby and should be legal (29%); Dog fighting/rooster fighting should be against the law (96%); we should neuter stray cats and dogs so they no longer have kittens/puppies (68%); owners of horse-drawn cabs need to take better care of their horses(99%); it is cruel to drive and ride horses in traffic (96%); it is cruel to keep pets/ guard dogs on the roof or in the yard (95%); people caught abusing their animals should be deprived of their right to take care of any animal (95%); it is necessary to test medicine and beauty products on animals (33%);animals should be kept in zoos and circuses (84%); and animal abusers should be listed and such a list made public so anyone selling an animal can check if the buyer is on the list (84%). Thus, it can be seen that (apart from zoos and circuses) the respondents are strong on the side of animals, in direct contrast with all the examples of animal abuse we find in Malta. In fact, according to the respondents (91%) Maltese people take good care of their animals. About 6 of the respondents have a pet, and most of them answered that they never keep their pet outside in extreme weather conditions (91%) and that they rarely keep their pets leashed or in cages for long periods of time (83%). Page 4 of 28
The respondents (96%) feel bad about animals coming close to extinction because of their features. However, ironically, only 54% stated that they never buy a piece of clothing knowing it is made out of real fur or leather. We know we cannot be kind to animals until we stop exploiting them exploiting animals in the name of science, exploiting animals in the name of sport, exploiting animals in the name of fashion, and yes, exploiting animals in the name of food. César Chávez Moreover, my respondents do not seem to associate animal abuse with the food they eat. In fact, respondents were also asked about the meat that they consume and the fact that certain animals are raised in uncomfortable environments to produce meat in short spams of time. Their answers were as follows: I try to avoid consuming such meat (26%); I feel uncomfortable knowing that I am consuming this type of meat but I have no choice (); I am not aware where the meat I eat comes from (26%); it doesn t concern me (7%). Paul McCartney once said: If slaughterhouses had glass walls, we would be all vegetarian since animals raised on modern factory farms and killed in slaughterhouses endure almost unimaginable suffering. So, although it is not my aim to encourage people to turn vegan, I do believe that there needs to be more education and information about the realities of animal abuse and, especially, about sustainable options to decrease this problem. Schools, Page 5 of 28
local councils, the media, and animal aid agencies can make a difference. So can all individuals, once they are really committed. Foremost among these potential solutions we find: 1. Teaching children how to relate to and treat animals. 2. Teaching pet owners how to look after their pets. 3. Raising awareness about the benefits of animal-assisted therapy on people s physical, mental and emotional health 4. Raising awareness about existent laws and aid organisations promoting animal welfare. 5. Emphasising the importance of reporting all instances of animal abuse. 6. Educating people about the cruelty of factory farming, including so-called humane options like free-range and free-roaming products in the meat, dairy, and egg industries, and the fact that: 97% of the 10 billion animals tortured and killed each year are farm animals. 7. Educating people about appetizing and more humane alternatives to meat dishes, so they can at least reduce their intake of meat and dairy products. 8. Educating people about animal extinction- its causes and consequences. From this study one can observe that many Maltese are becoming aware of animal rights and wellbeing and are against all that harms the life of animals. However, there is still a lot to be done, and the best tool is education, both inside and outside schools, and a determination on the part of everyone to do their best for animals. Page 6 of 28

Appendix 2: Template for Questionnaires Do you consider animal cruelty to be an issue in Malta that needs to be researched, monitored and enforced more than it is currently being dealt with? Yes, I do consider animal cruelty to be an issue in Malta and I do think the issue needs more attention No, I think animal cruelty is not an issue or it is being well managed in Malta Maybe, I am not sure because I haven't taken notice of the animal abuse statistics or news broadcasts I don't particularly care about the welfare of animals There have been previous cases where people who have committed heinous crimes against animals such as torture then committed similar crimes on humans. Do you think that there is a link between animal cruelty and violent crime? Yes, I do think that there is a strong link between serious animal cruelty and violent crime (on humans) No, I see no link whatsoever between animal cruelty and violent crime (on humans) I am uncertain; due to the seriousness of the question I find it hard to answer it with a yes or no answer Do you agree...that horses should be hit for race purposes?
