AMA Census of Physicians is sent to more than 250,000 physicians annually. Licensure data is provided directly from 70 different licensing authorities and 14 DO boards. Resident data is collected through the Annual National Census of Graduate Medical Education; the response rate is 97 percent. DO information is provided by osteopathic licensing boards, Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) programs and DOs requesting AMA membership. More than 41 million file updates are processed annually, averaging more than 150,000 updates every day. Licensure updates are performed on a monthly basis for the 77 percent of licensing boards who provide monthly data. The AMA processes licensure data within five business days of receipt. USPS Address Change Service (ACS) is used for AMA journals and other medical journals with electronic address returns each week, which provide a constant stream of file updates. National Change of Address Service (NCOA) is reported quarterly. The vast majority of U.S. hospitals trust and utilize AMA data for granting physician privileges in accordance with Joint Commission standards. More than 300 medical journals use AMA data for their distribution. Medical education and licensure information are primary source data reported from medical schools, residency training institutions, state licensing agencies, medical societies, DEA and ABMS. The AMA Masterfile is used for 57 million internal and 220 million external mailings per year. **Preferred professional mailing address (PPMA) boast a 97 percent deliverability rate (the industry standard is 92 percent) Preferred office location (POLO) addresses are available for 92 percent of office-based physicians Expiration dates are in place for more than 90 percent of physician licenses on file

4 AMA Physician Data Restriction Program The AMA Physician Data Restriction Program (PDRP) provides physicians with an opt-out mechanism to prohibit the release of their prescribing data to pharmaceutical sales representatives. The PDRP also allows physicians to register complaints against a company or individual who has used such information inappropriately. If the inappropriate behavior persists, the AMA will follow up on the physician s behalf. Physicians can refer colleagues to PDRP and introduce them to the program by clicking a button on the PDRP web site and entering the colleagues addresses. Visit prescribingdata to learn more about PDRP. List of self-designated practice specialties (SDPS) 2010 Self-designated practice specialties (SDPS) listed on the AMA Physician Masterfile have historically related to the record-keeping needs of the AMA and do not imply recognition or endorsement of any field of medical practice by the AMA. SDPS refers to a self-designated specialty which is neither equivalent to nor implies ABMS board certification. The fact that a physician chooses to designate a given specialty/area of practice on our records does not necessarily mean that the physician has been trained or has special competence to practice the SDPS. 7 FAQs on AMA Physician Professional Data Q: A: How are self-designated practice specialties (SDPS) defined? How do they correspond to ABMS board certification in a specialty? Physicians report their primary and secondary specialties on the annual AMA Census of Physicians survey. SDPS refers to a self-designated specialty that is neither equivalent to nor implies ABMS board certification. The fact that a physician chooses to designate a given specialty on AMA records does not necessarily mean that the physician has been trained or has special competence to practice the SDPS. Q: What are some of the sources for AMA Physician Masterfile data? A: The AMA Physician Masterfile receives data from a variety of primary sources. These sources include: Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC) Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) State licensing boards Medical and specialty societies Medical schools Hospitals American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS ) Q: Does the AMA Physician Masterfile contain physician prescribing information? A: No. The AMA does not collect, license, sell or have access to individual physician prescribing data. Q: What is the definition of a group practice in the AMA group practice file? A group practice is defined as the provision of health care services by two A: or more physicians who are formally organized as a legal entity in which business and clinical facilities, records and personnel are shared. Q: Why did the AMA develop the Physician Data Restriction Program? The AMA created the Physician Data Restriction Program (PDRP) to address A: a concern expressed by some physicians regarding the inappropriate use of their prescribing data by pharmaceutical sales representatives. Through PDRP, physicians can choose to restrict pharmaceutical reps from viewing their prescribing data. * Physicians can refer colleagues to PDRP and introduce them to the program by clicking a button on the PDRP Web site and entering the colleagues addresses. Q: What specific categories are included in the group practice file? The standard group practice product consists of separately linked modules. A: These modules include: Group demographics for groups of two physicians Group demographics for groups of three or more physicians Physician affiliations for groups of two physicians Physician affiliations for groups of three or more physicians Nurse practitioner module * The AMA does not collect, compile, license, sell or have access to physician prescribing data. Through contracts with health care information organizations, the AMA can exert regulations on how prescribing data are used. 1 and 2: See footnotes on last page. DA13: :PDF:5/10
