Describe student outreach program utilizing STAMP Out toolkit. Present results of student outreach. Demonstrate scholarly engagement. Identify successes, limitations, & points of improvement. Offer advice for other student ASCP chapters on outreach event.
4 The University at Buffalo School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences is ranked among the top pharmacy schools in the United States and considered one of the most prestigious. Founded in 1886, it is the second-oldest component of the University at Buffalo, which is the largest and most comprehensive university center in the SUNY system and the first public university in New York to be admitted into the Association of American Universities (AAU). Our school is home to many distinguished faculty, including American Association for the Advancement of Science fellows, State University of New York (SUNY) Distinguished Professors and recipients of the SUNY s Chancellor s Award for Excellence.

Spring 1997 UB SPPS ASCP- 43 active members At 2014 ASCP annual conference, students learned about STAMP Out Toolkit by ASCP Foundation for prescription misuse & abuse education Objectives Serve geriatric population through student led presentations Assess gaps in knowledge on proper drug use Educate on drug misuse & abuse to improve medication safety Engage with seniors in the community Provide materials to promote safe medication practices

9 Methods Before presenting, students assessed current knowledge of seniors Asked if they knew difference of prescription drug misuse & abuse Recorded number of seniors that could make this distinction Topics discussed Definitions & examples of prescription drug misuse & abuse Ways incorrect medication use can be harmful to them or others Commonly abused medications How to help someone abusing prescription drugs General medication safety tips (i.e. cleaning medicine cabinets, knowing side effects, and consulting doctors and pharmacists) Proper disposal of unused or expired drugs
10 Methods After presenting, students distributed self assessment quizzes Participants completed feedback survey Attendees received Key messages handout UB SPPS provided medication aids, such as Blood pressure & glucose monitoring cards Medication recorder cards Pill boxes Vial of LIFE- health information for medical emergencies Vial of LIFE materials Health information recorder cards
11 Results 30 seniors attended the three STAMP Out presentations Majority unaware of difference between prescription misuse & abuse Only 11 out of 30 participants (36%) reported previous knowledge Self-assessment quiz results All 30 participants received perfect scores Successfully learned the difference between drug misuse & abuse Correctly matched definitions Identified proper ways of upholding medication safety Feedback surveys High quality of the program content Presentation skills of student speakers
