2 Permissions Share Twitter Facebook An aging population in the United States is undergoing more spinal surgeries thanks to imp roved instrumentation techniques, better understanding of sp inal biomechanics, and correlations between sp inal disease and objective health related quality of life outcomes. With a rise in the severity of disease treated by the average spine surgeon, principles and techniques p reviously utilized only by the most seasoned scoliosis surgeon are now required for many cases of adult deformity seen in spine clinics across the country. While many p atients do well, the increased severity of disease combined with the demanding techniques and steep learning curves, complications can and do occur with many of these patients after surgical intervention. The book Sp inal Deformity: A Case-Based Ap p roach to Managing and Avoiding Comp lications is an excellent addition to the library of any spine surgeon at any level of training. Written and comp iled by editors Mummaneni, Park, Crawford, Kanter, and Glassman, this book details many useful techniques for surgical treatment of spinal deformity from the occiput to the sacrum and includes pathologies from trauma to tumor and beyond. The overwhelming emphasis is on comp lications typ ically encountered in an ap p roach or disease p resentation with chapters written by both key thought leaders and members of the new generation of multi-dimensional sp ine surgery trainees. This combined experience and exposure to new techniques enables the reader to learn from the collective wisdom of both neurosurgeons and orthop aedic surgeons and take key step s toward comp lication avoidance in this difficult new landscap e of sp inal deformity surgery. While there exist many excellent textbooks that focus on the principles of

3 sp inal deformity and surgical technique, this book is written entirely in a case-based format which allows the reader to easily digest very comp licated p atient p resentations and surgical ap p roaches to difficulty problems in the spine. Most chapters include emphasis on radiographic assessment and classification of the deformity with an eye towards op timal and appropriate surgical decision making. Each chapter features 1 (or several) complications common to an approach or disease process, with sp ecial attention towards techniques for comp lication avoidance in future cases. As is indicated after comp lications, both surgical and medical therapies are discussed in detail with a readily apparent and easily obtained pearl for each and every chapter.

4 View large Download slide The case-based approach is an excellent introduction to the nuances of spinal deformity surgery, and most chapters are direct and to the point without much sup erfluous descrip tion or information. The succinct nature of

5 each chap ter does come with several small drawbacks. Some chap ters feature step-by-step directions of surgical technique while others gloss over the initial surgical treatment and instead focus on the comp lications and management of such missteps. Likewise, few if any chapters have a checklist-style guide for comp lication avoidance that might allow the surgeon to easily review while in clinic or before a large case in the op erating room. Lastly, several chap ters have radiograp hs that have been shrunk or have had the quality reduced which make detailed analysis difficult, if not imp ossible. These minor inconveniences and stylistic choices should not detract or prevent this text from being added to the library either at home or in the clinic. In the end, this book will most likely benefit the spine surgeon in training, or surgeon who has recently begun treating more sp inal deformity within their practice. The simple, case-based presentation of complex ideas and potential complications by major thought leaders in the field of spinal deformity surgeon makes this text a wonderful and valued addition to any surgeon's library, now or in the future.
