2 Judging from advertisements for p rofessional books, continuing education workshops, and speakers, social workers appear to believe that codep endency is a p roblem about which they should be knowledgeable. This article traces the evolution of the codep endency construct and its burgeoning p op ularity in the 1980s. It critically examines codep endency from the perspective of researchers who have found little empirical support for the constellation of characteristics used to define the term and from the p ersp ective of feminist analysis. In addition, the article analyzes the assump tions about health and relationship s that are embedded in the concept of the codependency and contends, from the perspective of selfin-relation theory, that the concep t does not p rovide a useful framework for social work concep tualization and intervention with women.
