2 Dementia Awareness Week When is it? Dementia Awareness Week 2016 is taking place from May What is t he t heme for t he week? The theme for this year is confront ing dement ia. How can i get involved? We want you to get involved by confronting your worries and addressing dementia directly. By treating dementia as something separate, we hope you will feel more empowered to express your fears and do something about it. Speech bubbles We would love you to print out your favourite speech bubble template and write on whatever you feel or think about dementia. Don' t forget t o take a phot o and send it t o market ing@makingspace.co.uk so we can share on social media! 7 What is dementia?

8 What is dementia? Dementia is not a specific condition but a general term for a decline in mental ability. It describes a range of symptoms that may include memory loss and difficulties with thinking, problem solving or language. The main t ypes of dement ia There are over 100 different types of dementia. These are the 4 main kinds: Alzheimer?s disease This is where protein?plaques?and?tangles? develop in brain cells, which causes the cells to die Vascular This is when the blood vessels delivering blood to the brain are damaged. This means blood cannot reach the brain cells, which eventually causes the cells to die How will t he sympt oms affect me? Dement ia wit h Lewy bodies These symptoms can reduce your ability to carry out normal everyday tasks. You may also experience changes in your mood or behaviour. In the UK, over 800,000 people are affected by dementia, with Alzheimer?s being the most common type. This is where tiny, spherical protein deposits (Lewy bodies) develop inside nerve cells in the brain Signs and sympt oms - Memory loss that disrupts daily life - Challenges in planning or solving problems - Difficulty completing familiar tasks at home, at work or at leisure - Confusion with time or place - Trouble understanding visual images - New problems with words in speaking or writing - Misplacing things and losing the ability to retrace steps - Decreased poor judgment - Withdrawal from work or social activities - Changes in mood and personality Dementia is progressive, so these symptoms will gradually get worse and continue to affect everyday life. Front o-temporal dement ia This is when there has been damage to the brain?s frontal and/or temporal lobes

9 10 Early Signs of dementia to look out for... Everyone is unique and can develop signs of dementia differently. So what do you need to look out for? An individual?s personality, social awareness and general health are all important factors to look at when determining if someone may have dementia or not. We' ve put together a list of the most common early symptoms of dementia for you to look out for. 1. Memory loss Memory loss is the most common, most talked about early symptom of dementia and is more noticeable in short term memory. 2. Difficult y performing familiar tasks People with dementia can often struggle to complete everyday tasks. Tasks that are so familiar they would usually do them without thinking. For example, a person with dementia may not know what order to put clothes on or the steps for preparing a meal. 3. Problems wit h language If someone has dementia they can often forget simple words or even substitute words for ones that don' t make sense. They may think they have said the right word when really a jumbled one comes out. 4. Disorientat ion t o t ime and place We all forget what day it is or where we?re going sometimes, but people with dementia can sometimes confuse day and night or have no concept of time. They can often become lost in familiar places or forget where they live.

10 10 Early Signs of dementia to look out for Poor or decreased judgment If someone has dementia they may dress inappropriately, wearing several layers of clothes on a warm day. This can also affect poor judgment in social situations, for example they may make an inappropriate comment. 6. Problems with keeping track of things A common sign of dementia is finding it difficult to follow a conversation or keep up things such as paying their bills. 7. Misplacing t hings Misplacing something is not always a sign of dementia; everyone misplaces their car keys or mobile phone at some point. However a person with dementia may misplace things often or put things in unusual places, for example their keys in the sugar bowl. 8. Changes in mood or behaviour It?s not uncommon for people to have sad days, but a person with dementia can become very emotional very quickly and experience rapid mood swings for no apparent reason. They may also show less emotional that they previously would. 9. Changes in personalit y They may seem different from their usual self in ways that are difficult to pinpoint. A person with dementia may become anxious, irritable, depressed or agitated, especially in situations where memory loss is causing difficulty.

11 10 Early Signs of dementia to look out for Loss of init iat ive It?s common for people to become bored, have a lazy day or not want to go to work every so often. However a person with dementia can become very passive, sitting in front of the TV for hours, not wanting to leave the house, sleeping more that usual or loose interest in their hobbies.
