1 POST GRADUATE DIPLOMA COURSE IN GERIATRIC MENTAL HEALTH An Imbalanced increase among the elderly population worldwide raises a serious concern for professionals to prepare and deal with the varying requirements to address their needs. Services, client and family counselling, crisis intervention, advocacy, and assistance in Geriatric mental health is a branch of social work concerned with the welfare of elderly persons. Geriatric mental health is a process which tries to improve the quality of life by aging alleviating the negative aspects of gaining. A course a Geriatric mental health includes enhancing professional skills on geriatric care, case management long term care. By understanding the issue of global aging and its increasing impact on all facets of society, shows the urgent priority for geriatric professionals. To provide holistic approach to the elderly persons. The present course is conducted by training graduates with a social science background, health professionals, nurses, geriatric care takers, hospital social workers, physiotherapists, dieticians, primary care physicians, psychologists, occupational therapists, geriatric psychiatrists. The present diploma course enhances the inter-professional team approach to aging care. The scope of the course involves working in hospitals, community, institutions and setting up a counselling unit.

2 GERIATRIC MENTAL HEALTH Theory: 100 Hrs Practical: 50 Hrs Course Objectives: To understand the process of ageing and its implications for the individual and family To enhance professional skills on geriatric care To assess the mental health status of elderly persons To develop an interdisciplinary perspective on ageing and care Course Content: UNIT I: PERSPECTIVE OF AGEING Introduction to Gerontology- Meaning and scope Concept (physiology) of ageing- social, physical, psychological aspects of ageing Geriatric care, Development of geriatrics in India, Impact of Globalization on ageing Changes in the ageing scenario Myths and realities of ageing UNIT II: BIOLOGY OF AGEING Theories of ageing - Interaction between biological, physical, psychological and social process in ageing Legal and ethical issues related to aging Physical and Psychological problems among the aged Social problems among the aged Mental health assessment of ageing UNIT III: GERIATRIC COUNSELLING AND GUIDANCE Emergence of Counselling introduction to basic principles of counselling Basic counseling techniques in the area of gerontology Qualities required in a counselor Phases of Counselling Therapeutic relationship with the client Effective approaches in counseling in geriatric care
