4 Why we exist To improve personal wellbeing What is the problem? Research has suggested that depression affects 40% of older people in care homes. (Depression in Older People: Towards Securing Well-Being in Later Life, Help the Aged). Why does this matter? A diagnosis of depression in those over 65 increased subsequent mortality by 70% (Dewey ME, Sz P (2001). How can this be addressed? Interventions to increase social participation, physical activity, can prevent depression, particularly in older people (Royal College of General Practitioners)

5 Why we exist To improve independence & mobility What is the problem? Why does this matter? Only 7% of adults over the age of 75 years meet the minimum required level of physical activity for health benefits (Health Survey for England Adult Trend Tables, 2008; National Statistics, 2009) Age-related decline in physical function results in the increased prevalence of many chronic diseases, which then reduce an individual s capacity for independent living (Batt et al, 2013) How can this be addressed? One approach to ensure increased levels of health in an ageing population is exercise (Lovering and Brooks, 2014)

6 Why we exist To improve Mental Stimulation What is the problem? Daytime activities are an unmet need for 76% of care home residents with dementia (Hancoke et al, 2005) Why does this matter? Dementia is estimated to cost the UK 23 billion a year (Alzheimer s Society) How can this be addressed? Joint participation in games or physical activity and personalised music are significantly more effective than usual care in improving overall symptoms of agitation (Cohen-Mansfield et al, 2007)

7 Why we exist To improve social interaction What is the problem? Care home residents on average spend only two minutes a day participating in meaningful social interaction (Brooker, 2008) Why does this matter? Lack of social contact is a known risk factor for poor physical health outcomes (Cacioppo & Hawkley, 2003) and depression (Hawthorne, 2008) How can this be addressed? Relatively short periods of shared activity and social interaction has been shown to achieve a 25% improvement in behavioural symptoms (Cohen- Mansfield et al, 1997)
