ANNUAL REPORT 2016 / 2017 RETHINKING AGEING IN SINGAPORE

OUR PURPOSE A geriatric institute based in Singapore to conduct research and education on age-related health issues to promote healthy ageing OUR VISION A research institute to help Singapore better prepare for the challenges of an ageing population 1

ABOUT US The Geriatric Education & Research Institute (GERI) was set up in 2015 as a national entity under the Ministry of Health (MOH) to strengthen geriatric education, research and service planning in the health services and clinical aspects of ageing. To achieve our vision in helping Singapore better prepare for the challenges of an ageing population, GERI s initiatives are centred around five key programmes, namely, Geriatric Education, Health Services & Policy Research, Seniors Care Delivery & Health Outcomes, Frailty Identification, Prevention and Management and Clinical Geriatrics & End of Life. The programme leads work hand-in-hand with our faculty to ensure that relevant expertise is brought onto the table. The strong dedicated team of researchers, educators, biostatisticians and health economists are engaged in collaborative work to fuel our mission in promoting healthy ageing in Singapore. The institute is also equipped with robust research infrastructure, such as the Smart Home and Gait Lab. GERI welcomes potential partners to join us as faculty member or collaborator to transform Singapore s healthcare landscape to successful ageing. 4 OUR KEY PROGRAMMES Geriatric Education Health Services & Senior Care Delivery Frailty Identification, Policy Research in Community & Prevention & Health Outcomes Management Programme Lead: Programme Lead: Programme Lead: Programme Lead: A/Prof James Low Dr Wong Chek Hooi Dr Wong Chek Hooi A/Prof Wee Shiou Liang A/Prof Philip Yap The ageing population brings with it many challenges, one of which is in the training and upskilling of geriatric healthcare professionals. Geriatric Education endeavours to develop improved training methods for healthcare professionals, so as to promote quality care for the elderly. With the increased eldercare services in Singapore, there is a need to assess and evaluate current practices to advance the state of knowledge in healthcare for the ageing population. Coupled with an ageing population, an increase in life expectancy puts pressure on public healthcare facilities. It is thus important to integrate the management of healthcare into the community. To maximise the level and functional independence among the elderly, it is important to understand the determinants of frailty in order to innovate solutions to prevent and manage it. Clinical Geriatrics & End of Life (NEW) Programme Lead: A/Prof Ding Yew Yoong With an increased life expectancy, it is inevitable that the elderly will experience co-morbidity of illnesses. Clinical geriatric research helps to identify and diagnose age-related diseases. 3

MESSAGE FROM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Prof Pang Weng Sun Ever since our soft launch in 2016, GERI has been committed to our purpose in rethinking ageing in Singapore. Looking back on the past year, we have been focused on developing and refining our research projects to address the future challenges of an ageing Singapore. Amidst a wider research portfolio, the Singapore Longitudinal Ageing Study (SLAS) is one of GERI s more notable projects guiding clinical practices in the local geriatric scene. Through rigorous methodology, prospective studies such as the SLAS provide direction for clinicians and healthcare professionals on the ground, enabling them to anticipate and meet the challenges of our future elderly population. As Singapore prepares for her ageing population, it is important for GERI to remain aligned to the national vision of helping our seniors age-in-place. It is our duty to remain committed to planning and conducting top-quality translational research. With this in mind, we have been actively collaborating with external stakeholders to sharpen the quality of our research projects. Over the past year, we have been collaborating with institutions to harness their expertise and technological know-how in augmenting our research projects. The Centre for Ageing and Research & Education (CARE) and Neeuro Pte Ltd are two of such examples. In addition, we have also been working with community stakeholders in the North and Central Singapore to provide as well assess new and existing programmes. I would like to express my deep gratitude to the Board and Senior Management of Alexandra Health System (AHS) who were tasked by the Ministry of Health in 2015 to set up and develop GERI. With the public healthcare reorganisation in January 2017, AHS has been integrated with the National Healthcare Group (NHG) and responsibility for the governance of GERI now falls under NHG. Moving forward, it is our goal to be at the forefront of geriatric research in Singapore. I would like to challenge all researchers in GERI to upkeep their tenacity and quest for excellence in the Institute s research pursuits. At the same time, I urge all of you to stay grounded and to keep abreast with the present and future needs of our ageing population. I look forward to seeing more needs-based research and I am confident of the positive impact that we will make with our research. 4

Smart monitoring Two panels of oneway mirrors were installed for the ease of observation in an unobtrusive manner. 14

GAIT LAB RESOURCE CENTRE DISCUSSION ROOMS Equipped for testing The in-house Gait, Cognition and Falls Lab is equipped with state-of-the-art technology for the measurement of gait and physiological profiles in the study of frailty. A bank of knowledge A Resource Centre is being set up to provide an archive of key geriatric policies and documents, geriatric and gerontology resources and clinical journals. A discussion room is also available for sharing and exchange of new insights. 15

PROJECTS

PROJECT OVERVIEW GERI aims to be the thought leader in eldercare research in the clinical and community setting. As part of national efforts to help seniors age-in-place, GERI has spearheaded several projects targeted at evaluating and designing interventions in the current eldercare landscape. Moving forward, GERI will be launching new programmes that are focused on clinical geriatrics in end-of-life care settings. It is our aim that our research findings will benefit not only the geriatricians, but other stakeholders as well. We hope that the relevance of our research will increase the likelihood of adoption of our research findings into practice. It is also in GERI s agenda to align with Singapore s vision of being a Smart Nation as we commence the testing of our SMART Home technologies to reinvent living and working spaces for Singapore s ageing population. MAIN OBJECTIVES Maintaining the functional capacities of seniors and helping them to age-in-place Developing a care model towards dying with dignity Increasing the capabilities and capacities of community eldercare programmes Spearheading research on ageless living and working spaces 17
