3 Teachers Notes Rationale The Humpback Whale Activity Book is a text based resource for students aged 8 to 12. It is intended to be used in conjunction with the resource, The Humpback Whale A Very Spcecial Mammal, available from Ready-Ed Publications, but it also can be used as a stand-alone resource. The worksheets include activities relevant to Science, Society and Environment/HSIE, English, Mathematics, Visual Art and ICT (Information Communication Technology). The range of topics covered includes environmental concerns, animal behaviour, inherited and learned characteristics, the classification of animals and the endangered status of animals. Skills include creative writing, using descriptive devices, comprehension and critical thinking, developing spelling strategies, reading, interpreting and creating graphs, and using the Internet and library to research topics. Objectives To foster a greater understanding of the interdependence of humans and animals To develop skills in comprehension and critical thinking To develop and refine research skills To recognise the importance of biodiversity in nature To read and interpret statistical information related to the environment To appreciate and value the importance of preserving the environment and conserving species.
