Maclin, PsyD Course Dates: February 13, 14 March 13, 14 April 17, 18 Course Times: Fridays 6:30-9:30 Instructor Contact Information: Saturdays 8:30-4:30 Office Number: Cell Number: Office Hours: Wed, Thurs and Fri 1:30-4:00 pm or by appointment Course Description This course provides students with an overview of biological, psychological, behavioral, and theological material concerning human sexuality. Topics will cover the basics of theology of sexuality, human anatomy, sexual cycles/phases, and sexual problems, dysfunctions and treatments. Special topics may include sexual abuse, disability, aging, pornography, commercial sex, contraception, pregnancy, abortion, sexually transmitted infections, sex and the media, the connection between sexuality and spirituality, with considerations of theological perspectives on the preceding topics. Gordon Conwell Mission Article 2: To maintain academic excellence in the highest tradition of Christian scholarship in the teaching of the biblical, historical and theological disciplines. Theological education, which is properly done within and for the Church, ought to function with rigor and academic integrity. The seminary, therefore, must provide an environment within which teaching and learning can best occur and encourage high levels of scholarly competence and research in its faculty. Article 3: To train and encourage students, in cooperation with the Church, to become skilled in ministry. The Church and the seminary share the goal of seeing knowledge, skills and experience integrated in the person who ministers. Through the courses and the practica/internships, a combination of careful training and supervised experience in counseling ministries are pedagogical practices essential to achieving that goal. Course Objectives Students will gain knowledge and be able to identify and develop plans to address: 1. Biblical and theological perspectives on human sexuality 2. Anatomy and physiology of the male and female reproductive systems 3. The sexual response and experiences of men and women 4. The process of conception, pregnancy, and childbirth 5. The changes across the lifespan related to human sexuality 6. How sexual dysfunctions manifests (how they develop), and treatment techniques 7. How to talk to children and help parents talk to children about sex 8. The various topics related to atypical sexual behavior 9. The symptoms, process of transmission, diagnoses, treatments and risk management of sexually transmitted infections

2 Class Structure and Instruction To achieve the objectives of this course and address the course content, the instructor will employ a variety of teaching interventions that will include group discussions, individual projects, lectures, role plays, facilitated reflection, case presentations and simulated activities. (2012) Human sexuality: Diversity in contemporary America 8 th Edition. New York, NY; McGraw Hill. Course Requirements and Expectations A. Reading/Writing Assignment (50 points) To develop an adequate foundation in understanding human sexuality, students are expected to read from a variety of sources. In addition to the textbooks, readings may be chosen from the appended bibliography, the bibliographies in the textbooks, or books or articles from the primary literature selected by the students provided they pertain to the topics covered by this course. To become conversant with topics covered in the course students are to read not only the required texts, but also other sources. The students are to select three topics from those below and write a brief summary addressing the questions for the assignment. After selecting one of the topics and reading from at least five sources (sources not older than five years) about the topic students are to write a five (5) page that addresses the following information: 1. Students should address how a client might present in therapy with said topic. Students should provide examples of how individuals might develop the problem, and what might be treatment techniques to deal with the problem. 2. Students should identify, as a Christian therapist, their views, attitudes, beliefs and thoughts about the particular topic. Additionally, identify how they should manage their personal views in providing therapy to clients. 3. Students should identify treatment approaches that could be used to address the specific topic with a client. Topics: a. Female or male client with sexual dysfunction disorder DSM-5 disorders- Female/Male Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder Male Erectile Disorder Female Orgasmic Disorder Sexual Interest/Sexual Arousal Disorder men or women Sexual Paraphillias (Pedophilia, Exhibitionism, Voyeurism) b. Client sexual changes for adolescent or adult over 60 years old c. Gender identity disorder in adolescent or an adult Due date: April 24, 2015 submitted electronically in the Sakai course assignments area.

3 B. Sex in Media//Magazines/Movies/ Articles/ Cases (50 points) a. During the class period students will discuss how sex is presented in the media and the effects of the media on individuals and their understanding and experience of their sexuality. b. The class will review two magazines; one aimed at women and one aimed at men, and discuss how sex and sexuality is presented to the readers, attending to gender differences and stereotypes. The discussion will examine personal, psychological, and theological/biblical perspectives. c. Students will watch the following movies Addicted and No Strings Attached before the 2 nd weekend of class March Be during the 2 nd weekend of class to discuss your reaction to the themes, and include personal, psychological and theological/biblical perspectives. d. Students will receive three articles and will discuss the topics and what the research has to say about sexual views and perspectives. e. During the third weekend (April 17-18) of class students will receive three cases that will be discussed during the class and consider topics of marital dynamics, desire in marriage, and extramarital affairs. The group discussions will focus on the students engagement with such topics in a clinical setting and their own personal views and attitudes. C. Sexual Integration (100 points) Select one of the topics below and write about your theology of sexuality about the topic. Your paper will address your biblical and theological references and perspectives on sexuality, sexuality in marriage and an explication of sin and sexuality. Students should select one of the topics below and consider it from a theology of sexuality. Using both Scripture and 5-7 theological and psychological sources address the topic identifying your personal, biblical and psychological views. Students should write a 8-10 page paper regarding an integration of sexuality. The paper should be written in APA format and should include introduction, conclusion sections and subheadings that allows the paper to for the reader. Topics: Teenage sexual activity Sexual activity for Christians Adult consensual sex with minors Perspective of masturbation for married couples and singles Sexually transmitted infections for virgins in marital relationship Due date: May 8, 2015 submitted electronically in the Sakai course assignments area. D. Exam (100 points) The proctored exam for Human Sexuality will be due Friday, May 15, 2015 by 11:59 pm. It will be worth 100 points and will consist of multiple-choice and short answer questions from Corey, Corey & Callahan (2012) texts that addresses the major topics that were address during the class. A stud guide of questions will be provided. Grading of Assignments Lateness will be penalized 3-points for each day an assignment is late. Excessive or insufficient length will be penalized three points per page over/under limits. Failure to use APA format will be

4 penalized up to one letter grade, depending on the errors. Assistance with correct APA format is available online. Plagiarism is considered a serious academic offense at GCTS. Please note the guidelines at Attendance The style and format of this course is essentially that of a senior seminar that anticipates maximum class input and reflective discussion from the student. The student is expected to attend all class sessions and participate fully in the classroom experience. Class discussions will be a significant part of the final grade. Attendance/Participation (30 points) Students are expected to attend class and actively participate in the class. The attendance/participation points are not automatic. These points will be divided half for attending each weekend and half for participating in class exercises each class period. If students are late to class, leave early from class, or do not complete in-class assignments then points will be deducted each class period. Cheating involves, but is not necessarily limited to, the use of unauthorized sources of information during an examination or the submission of the same (or substantially same) work for credit in two or more courses without the knowledge and consent of the instructors. Plagiarism involves the use of

6 another person s distinctive ideas or words, whether published or unpublished, and representing them as one s own instead of giving proper credit to the source. Plagiarism can also involve over dependence on other source material for the scope and substance of one s writing. Such breaches in academic standards often result in a failing grade as well as other corrective measures. For more information, please consult the Student Handbook. ADA Policy The seminary complies with the provisions of the Americans with Disabilities Act. A student with a qualifying and authenticated disability who is in need of accommodations should petition the seminary in accordance with the stated guidelines in the Student Handbook. Cancellation of Class In the event the seminary has to cancel a class meeting (impending storm, professor illness, etc.), the Registration Office will send out an (via the GCTS account) notification to all students registered in the respective course. If the cancelation occurs the day of the scheduled meeting, the Registration Office will also attempt to contact students via their primary phone contact on record. The professor will contact the students (via GCTS account) regarding make-up. If a weekend class is cancelled, the class will be made up during the scheduled Make-Up weekend (see the academic calendar for the designated dates). For more info, consult your Student Handbook. Extension Policy Arrangements for submission of late work at a date on or before the last day to submit written work, as noted on the seminary s Academic Calendar, are made between the student and professor. Formal petition to the Registration Office is not required at this time. This includes arrangements for the rescheduling of final exams. wever, course work (reading and written) to be submitted after the publicized calendar due date, must be approved by the Registration Office. An extension form, available online, must be submitted to the Registration Office prior to the last day to submit written work. Requests received after this date will either be denied or incur additional penalty. For a full discussion of this policy, please consult the Student Handbook. Grades Grades are posted on line within twenty-four hours of receipt from the professor. Students are expected to check their CAMS student portal in order to access posted grades. Those individuals who need an official grade report issued to a third party should put their request in writing to the Registration Office. Faculty have six weeks from the course work due date to submit a final grade. Returned Work Work submitted through Sakai will be returned via Sakai since no hard copies will be turned in. Enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope with any hard copy work submitted if you wish to have it returned.
