These are just some of the benefits of quitting smoking, which most smokers are well aware of. But whether you re trying to quit for the first time or the umpteenth time, it likely won t be easy. Smoking is a hard addiction to shake, both physically and psychologically. According to experts, the nicotine in cigarettes is every bit as addictive as cocaine or heroin. What will work best for you depends on a number of factors such as how long you ve had the habit, and whether you re an occasional or heavy smoker. Self-help programs and materials generally work best for people who smoke less than 10 cigarettes a day. Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) can also help wean smokers off nicotine in the early stages of quitting by reducing nicotine withdrawal symptoms. Choices include gum, inhalers, lozenges and long-acting patches. There are also some prescription drugs designed to help people quit smoking. However, since they can cause side effects, such as agitation and depressed mood, they may not be right for everybody. Are e-cigs safe? One popular and controversial quitting device is electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes or e-cigs). These small, battery-powered devices are shaped and used like cigarettes, but they don t contain tobacco. Instead, some contain nicotine that is inhaled as a vaporized solution when the person puffs on the e-cigarette. Health Canada advises that e-cigarettes should not be used because they have not been fully evaluated for safety, quality and effectiveness. So to be on the safe (and legal) side, you may want to try another smoking cessation option. And always talk to your doctor about which alternatives may be right for you. Other tips to butt out include: Set a quit date. This could be a specific date such as an anniversary, a birthday or the start of a new year. Setting a day to quit formalizes the attempt, making you mentally prepared and more motivated. Remove smoking triggers. These can be anything you personally connect with smoking such as your morning coffee, an ashtray, matches or a favorite lighter. Don t give up. Most people have to make three or four attempts before they permanently quit. It s usually a six-month to two-year process. Get to Know Your Pharmacist.
