1 GUARANTEED GAZETTE Too Fast for Conditions Driving too fast for conditions is defined as traveling at a speed that is greater than a reasonable standard for driving. Examples of conditions where drivers may find themselves driving too fast include: wet roadways (rain, snow or ice), reduced visibility (fog), uneven roads, construction zones, curves, intersections, gravel roads and heavy traffic. The Large Truck Crash Causation Study (LTCCS) reported that 23% of large truck crashes occurred when Commercial Motor Vehicles were traveling too fast for conditions. Tip #!: REDUCE YOUR SPEED IN ADVERSE ROAD AND/OR WEATHER CONDITIONS. Adjust your speed to safely match weather conditions, visibility and traffic. Excessive driving speed is a major cause of fatal crashes and higher speeds may cause more severe crashes. Tip #2: ENTER A CURVE SLOWLY. Speed limits posted on curve warning signs are intended for passenger vehicles, not large trucks. Trucks should reduce their speed even further. Studies have shown that trucks entering a curve, even at the posted speed limit, have lost con- trol and rolled due to their high center of gravity. Did you know? 40% of speeding related fatalities occur on curves. Did you know? Braking in a curve can cause the wheels to lock up and the vehicle to skid. Tip #3: DRIVE SLOWLY WITH A LOADED TRAILER. Be more cautious with a loaded trailer. Loaded trailers have a higher center of gravity and sudden speed adjustment may cause the load to shift, leading to skidding or a rollover. Did you know? Large trucks with loaded trailers are 10 times more likely to roll over than those with empty trailers. Did you know? Loaded trailers require 20 to 40% more braking distance than passenger vehicles to come to a complete stop. Tip #4: SLOW DOWN IN WORK ZONES. Before entering a work zone, decrease your speed. Merge onto the correct lane well ahead of any lane closures and be prepared to slow sown or stop suddenly. Speed increases perception-reaction distance, braking distance and stopping distance. 3 S.T.O.P. Rollovers Keep the Load on the Road S (Steer Smoothly) - Use the Take Ten Technique when changing lanes. T (Top Heavy) - 18 wheelers can rollover easier than automobiles due to the higher center of gravity. O (On & Off Ramps) - drive 10 mph below the posted speed limit for an on and off ramps. Posted speed limits are for cars. P (Prepare Early) - Slow while in the deceleration lane for off ramps. Brake before curves, not after them. TAKE TEN TECHNIQUE: Mirrors checked to ensure lane is clear. Signal on at least 3 seconds before beginning to move over. Check mirrors while moving over. Take at least 7 seconds for move into other lane. Continue to check mirrors while passing vehicle. After rear of trailer has cleared other vehicle, signal for at least 3 seconds. Mirrors checked when moving over. Minimum 7 seconds to move back into right lane. Cancel signal when the lane change is complete. If you see a safety hazard canceling the lane change may be the safest decision. Most drivers believe that rollovers happen only in poor driving conditions or in the dark of night. The truth is 2/3 of rollovers occur during the day with over half occurring on dry, straight roads. Attentive driving can prevent most rollovers. BE ALERT Drivers can never be to comfortable behind the wheel. Always remain alert and never drive drowsy. KNOW YOUR LOAD Beware of the slosh and surge effect of cargo tanks and how sudden load shifts can contribute to accidents. CHECK YOUR VEHICLE Make sure brakes and tires are safe. Even veteran drivers are involved in rollovers, with 66% of accidents involving drivers with more than 10 years of experience. Rollovers can happen at any time, which makes it critical that every driver know the causes of rollover events and how to prevent crashes. You are the differ- ence between a safe arrival and another statistic.

6 What Happens When You Quit Smoking? If you quit right now and never picked up another cigarette your body would go through amazing changes starting just 20 minutes after quitting. If you want to quit but are having a difficult time mentally shifting, learning what happens when you quit smoking may very well provide you with that final push. The health effects of smoking can be terrible, but the effects of quitting can be phenomenal. This positive spin on the benefits of quitting rather than the negative effects of continuing may be what one needs. Here are some of the many benefits of quitting smoking and a timeline of what will happen once you quit smoking. You may (or may not) be surprised by what you read. * In about 20 minutes your blood pressure and pulse rate will decrease and the body temperature of your hands and feet will in- crease. * At approximately the 8-12 hour mark the carbon monoxide level in your blood will decrease to normal and your blood oxygen level will increase to normal. * At 24 hours the chance of you having a heart attack decreases significantly. * At about 48 hours nerve endings begin to regrow and your ability to smell and taste is enhanced. * Between 2 weeks and 3 months your circulation improves, walking becomes easier, coughing and wheezing is experienced less often. Phlegm production decreases and at about the 3 month mark lung function is significantly improved. * Between 1 and 9 months you will experience all of the benefits already listed in addition to less sinus congestion, fatigue and shortness of breath. Cilia, tiny hair-like structures that move mucus out of the lungs, also regain normal function. * In 1 year your risk of coronary heart disease and heart attacks is reduced by half of what it used to be when you were a smoker. * Between 5 and 15 years the risk of having a stroke returns to normal, before you started smoking. * At about the 10 year mark your chance of developing various cancers including cancer of the lungs, mouth, throat, esophagus, bladder, kidney and pancreas greatly decreases. Risk of lung cancer reverts to that of a non-smoker. In fact, diet and smoking habits make up nearly 60% of cancer cases. * In about 15 years your risk of coronary heart disease and heart attacks shifts to that of a person who has never smoked before. The risk of death also drops nearly to the level of a non-smoker. While many people do not know everything smoking can potentially lead to, it is well known that nothing positive on a health level can come out of the activity.
