EXTRAMURAL FUNDING Active Research Support K01CA (M. de Dios, PI) 9/15/12 8/31/17 Project Impact: A Culturally Tailored Adherence Intervention for Latino Smokers NIH - National Cancer Institute Total Cost: $701,031. Status: Awarded/Current The aim of this project is to develop and test a culturally tailored medication adherence intervention for Latino smokers. In the initial development phase of the research, qualitative methods will be used to develop Latino-targeted components of the intervention. During the clinical trial phase of the study, Latino smokers interested in quitting will be randomized to one of two groups - Culturally Tailored Adherence (CTA), or 2) Standard Medication Management (SMM). The proposed study will be conducted in the context of a five-year career development program that will provide advanced training in Latino smoking cessation and health, qualitative methods, adherence interventions, tobacco addiction and cessation, and the use of technology in healthcare. Role: Principal Investigator (80% CY Effort) 1R01CA (Irvin-Vidrine, J., PI) 5/12/14 4/30/19 Smoking Cessation for Cervical Cancer Survivors in a Safety Net Healthcare System NIH - National Cancer Institute Total Cost: $2,499,524 Status: Awarded/Current This study will evaluate the efficacy and cost-effectiveness of a theoretically- and empirically-based Motivation And Problem-Solving (MAPS) approach for promoting and facilitating smoking cessation among cervical cancer survivors in a large, safety net public healthcare system. Participants will be followed for a period of 18 months, and will be randomly assigned to one of two treatment groups: 1) Standard Treatment [ST], or 2) MAPS. The primary outcome is abstinence from tobacco across all assessments. Secondary outcomes are smoking quit attempts, cigarettes per day, use of the Texas Quitline and cost-effectiveness. The specific aims are to: 1) Compare the efficacy of a MAPS approach to facilitating smoking cessation to ST among cervical cancer survivors; 2) Assess the effects of the intervention on hypothesized mechanisms (motivation, agency, and stress/negative affect) and the role of mechanisms in mediating MAPS effects on abstinence; and 3) Compare the cost-effectiveness of MAPS and ST. Role: Co-Investigator (20% CY Effort) R01HL (Fagundez, C., PI) 7/1/2015 6/31/2020 Project Heart: Biobehavioral Effects on Cardiovascular Risk for Bereaved Spouses NIH National Heath Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) Total Cost: $2,525,040 Status: Funded This project examines mechanistic connections among attachment insecurity, depression, RSA, and inflammation cross-sectionally and longitudinally, with data on these key dimensions collected at 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, and 12 months after the spouse s death. Participants will be spouses of patients who recently passed away to stage IV non-small cell lung cancer and matched controls. Role: Co-Investigator (15% CY Effort) Page 4 of 10

5 Pending Applications R01AG (de Dios, M., PI) 4/1/2016-3/31/2021 Developmentally tailored smoking cessation treatment for mid-life Latinos NIH National Institute of Aging (NIA) Total Cost: $3,762,230 Status: Pending Review This study aims to develop and test a developmentally and culturally tailored smoking cessation intervention for Latino smokers. In the initial development phase of the proposed project, qualitative methods will be utilized to inform the development of our intervention. During the second phase of our proposed project, we will conduct a randomized clinical trial (RCT) of 400 Latino smokers between the ages of (mid-life) that are motivated to quit. Participants will be randomized to one of two treatment conditions MTLD-Based (MC), or 2) Health Education (HE). All participants will receive 12 weeks of NRT, 2 booster calls, self-help materials, and two follow-up assessments at 6 and 12 months which will include biochemically verified measures of smoking abstinence (primary outcomes). We hypothesize that participants in the MC group will have superior rates of abstinence at both follow-up assessments as compared to the Health Education group. Role: Principal Investigator (40% CY Effort) R (Fagundez, C., PI) 3/31/2015 3/31/2020 Marital Hostility, Autonomic Activity, Inflammation, and Quality of Life during the First Year after Primary Treatment for Breast Cancer: A Longitudinal Dyadic Design NIH National Cancer Institute & American Cancer Society (Submitted to both) Total Cost: $2,252,522 Status: Submitted, October 2014 The goal of the proposed study is to examine whether marital hostility among breast cancer survivors and their spouses is associated with breast cancer symptoms through autonomic, neuroendocrine, and inflammatory processes. This project builds upon this team s preliminary findings demonstrating that (a) hostility confers altered patterns of autonomic, neuroendocrine, and inflammatory discharge in healthy adults, (b) the autonomic, neuroendocrine, and immune systems are linked to the aforementioned symptom cluster, and (c) the hostility of spouses can have an interactive effect on health and well-being outcomes. Role: Co-Investigator (10% CY Effort) Completed Projects R01CA S1 (de Dios, M.A., PI) 11/1/ /31/2011 National Cancer Institute Social support and smoking cessation among methadone-maintained smokers Total Cost: $223,030. Status: Completed This study included two phases of data collection, analyses, and manuscript development. In the first phase (Year 1), baseline data was analyzed with the aim of characterizing the functional and structural social support and social network domains of smokers involved in methadone maintenance treatment. Also, social support and social network variables were examined as predictors of key smoking cessation treatment domains (e.g., nicotine dependence, motivation to quit, & quitting self-efficacy). In the second phase (Year 2), follow-up data were used to examine the relationship between social support and social network variables and smoking cessation outcomes during methadone treatment. R01AA (Stein, M., PI) 9/15/2011 8/31/2016 National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcohol Reducing STIs in Emerging Adults who Use Alcohol and Marijuana Total Cost: $2,595,230 Status: Active The aim of this study is to demonstrate a reduction in STIs and sexual risk behavior through the reduction of alcohol and marijuana use. This study is a randomized clinical trial of 500 sexually active, emerging adult men and women assigned to either (a) a brief, motivationally-focused alcohol and marijuana intervention (MI), or (b) a health education (HE) attention-matched control condition. The Primary Aims of the study are: 1. test the hypothesis that among emerging adults who are engaging in alcohol and marijuana use, a brief motivational intervention (MI), relative to health education (HE), will result in lower STI incidence after 9 and 15 months. 2. Page 5 of 10

6 test the hypothesis that among emerging adults who are engaging in marijuana and alcohol use, MI will result in less alcohol use relative to HE, as indexed by lower percentage of alcohol use days after 9 and 15 months. 3. To test the hypothesis that among emerging adults who are engaging in marijuana and alcohol use, MI will result in less marijuana use relative to HE, as indexed by lower percentage of marijuana use days after 9 and 15 months. 4. To test the hypothesis that alcohol and/or marijuana mediate the effect of MI on STI outcomes. The outcomes for this study will be STIs measured by biologic testing, as well as alcohol and marijuana use days assessed at 9 and 15-months. Role: Co-Investigator (09/ /2012) R01DA (Niaura & Stanton Co-PI) 8/5/2005 7/31/2010 Reducing Ethnic Health Disparities: Motivating HIV+ Latinos to Quit Smoking National Cancer Institute Total Cost: $2,299,992 Status: Completed The goal of this project is to develop and evaluate a clinic based culturally tailored smoking cessation treatment for low-income, Latino, HIV+ populations. This study compared a culturally sensitive intervention to a standard care control condition, in a randomized controlled trial. The primary hypothesis of this study was - Latinos receiving the Culturally Tailored Intervention will demonstrate greater biochemically verified smoking abstinence rates at 12- months post-baseline than those receiving a Standard Care Intervention control treatment. The main effect of acculturation on smoking quit rates in the two treatment conditions were also tested. The extent to which the intervention reaches patients and with whom it is most effective will be uncovered by examining mediators and moderators of the intervention and the relationship to smoking cessation. Role: Post-Doctoral Fellow [Project Manager & Senior Interventionist] Internally Funded Projects de Dios, M.A., PI 12/1/2009 6/1/2011 Motivational enhancement & mindfulness meditation for young adult female marijuana smokers Total Cost: [Internally Funded] Status: Completed The aim of this study was to pilot test a new blended behavioral intervention for young adult female marijuana users with comorbid anxiety symptoms. The intervention included elements of mindfulness based meditation and motivational interviewing and the study used a two-group randomized design. This study tested the efficacy of a brief intervention using motivational interviewing (MI) plus mindfulness meditation (MM) to reduce marijuana use among young adult female. Thirty-four female marijuana users between the ages of were randomized to either the intervention group (n = 22), consisting of 2 sessions of MI-MM or an assessmentonly control group (n = 12). Participants marijuana use was assessed at baseline, 1, 2, and 3 months posttreatment. Fixed-effects regression modeling was used to analyze treatment effects. de Dios, M.A., PI 12/1/2009 6/1/2011 Project Impact: A Pilot Study of Smoking Cessation for Hispanic Light Smokers Total Cost: [Internally Funded] Status: Completed The aim of this study was to compare two treatments for Latino light smokers using a three group randomized double blind design. Participants received either 12 weeks of nicotine replacement therapy, varenicline, or varenicline placebo. We sought to 1) evaluate the efficacy of 12 weeks of varenicline and nicotine replacement therapy for increasing smoking abstinence in Latino light smokers. 2) determine the efficacy of 12 weeks of varenicline and nicotine replacement therapy for decreasing nicotine withdrawal symptoms and tobacco craving in Latino light smokers. 3) test the effects of the treatments on the key construct variables of our theoretical model including smoking urges, withdrawal symptoms, and reinforcing effects of smoking.
