2 Learning Objectives 1. Understand the current research related to e-cigarettes and other ENDS products. 2. List effective strategies for increasing knowledge regarding the negative health effects of e-cigarette use and decrease ecigarette use on college campuses. 3. Learn how to create social norms marketing campaigns designed to address e-cigarette misperceptions among the college student population.

3 The Journey: Hawaii s Tobacco Control Efforts 1. A long history of tobacco-free and smoke-free campus policy initiatives. 2. An extensive network of community partners and strong unions. 3. New State laws that protect the workplace and prohibit the sale of all tobacco products to anyone under the age of 21.

4 Myth #1 Not Just Water Vapor 1. Contain Harmful Chemicals 2. Risk of Second Hand and Third Hand Exposure to these chemicals 3. Contain addictive levels of nicotine 4. Flavors like cotton candy and bubble gum are designed to attract young people (Flora et al., 2016; Gostin & Glasner, 2014; Herrington & Myers, 2015; Maina et al., 2016)

5 Myth #2 Not Regulated 1. Still waiting for FDA Regulations to be released 2. E-Cigarettes are mass produced with little quality control, units have been known to explode 3. Children have been poisoned by drinking the e-cigarette liquid (California Dept. of Health Tobacco Control Program Officers Report, 2015)

6 Myth #3 Not a Cessation Device 1. Originally marketed as an effective smoking cessation device. 2. Studies show that e-cigarette use may increase dual use of e-cigarettes and conventional cigarettes. 3. Gateway drug: E-Cigarette use can lead young people to use conventional cigarettes who never would have started smoking. (Bunnell et al., 2015; Dutra & Glanz, 2014; Pokhrel et al., 2014)

7 Myth # 4 Not Allowed (The Good News!) 1. Approximately 1500 U.S. college campuses that have smoke or tobacco-free policies. 2. Smoke free workplace policies and laws can prohibit the use of ecigarettes indoors, making classrooms and offices healthier places to work and live. 3. Laws raising the age of sale of tobacco products including ecigarettes can discourage young people from using them. (American Non-Smokers Rights Association, 2016)

8 Using Social Norms Theory to Address ENDS Trends on College Campuses 1. Behavior is influenced by how others behave and these perceptions are often incorrect 2. Students overestimate risk-taking behaviors among their peers and underestimate protective behaviors 3. Replacing misperceived norms with actual norms encourages healthier behavior among college students

10 Developing a Social Norms Marketing Campaign Small Group Activity 1. Break up into groups of 3 or 4 colleagues. You are now a creative team! 2. Choose one campus or community that you want to target. Using the 7 step model, brainstorm a campaign you could develop. 3. Include at least one normable statistic that is easily recognizable within your e-cigarette poster campaign. 4. Create a simple mock up of your poster to share with the other teams.
